Did you include these because they are ranked so low?

Dime was an amazing guitarist, as is Scott Ian. Queensryche is amazing, as is BOC. Metal? I honestly think the definition of "metal" changes from decade to decade. BOC was metal back then. Queensryche was as well. Anthrax, well, they are metal then, and now.

I guess I just don't hear the metal in BOC... *shrug* I guess I've never gone through everything to be fair so I'll retract on them. Talk about a guy who had in influence on a part of the metal genre 30 years later... who wants to talk about how much disrespect Fripp's getting? I can see him with the dark red '53 telecaster right now. Adam Jones will tell you, I know that. Probably 9/10 prog rock/metal guitarists list Fripp somewhere in their influence. *shrug* For guys like Dimebag and Bradley Nowell (sp), their fame (and perception of talent) changes as they leave the earth in the ways that they did. Death has a profound effect on stars.

Oh, and Flea as a top 5 bassist? You're welcome to your opinion but Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorious, Charles Mingus, Paul Davis. I am inclined to feel that the bass REALLY is a lost art when you listen to a good Jazz musician play it. Flea sure does lay it down better than any popular bassist today, but it doesn't exactly make him a bass God, IMO.

Speaking of Dimebag, I found out the other day that my wife works with the guy who shot the video of his death. Weird.

That is SO wild!! I can't imagine really being there during that!!!!!!

It would definately be an experience to remember, but I don't think I'd really want to see something like that.

Not trying to be a dick, but who the hell is Fripp?

Fame, sure.......perception of talent, not a chance. Dime was one of the best guitarists in 30 years.........IMO

Or this...

Personally, I like the all-purple uniform a little bit better....

As far as the dead rocks stars, I'll take Jim Morrison (vocals), Johnny Thunders (lead guitar), Dee Dee Ramone (bass), and Keith Moon (drums) ... the ultimate knife-fighting, hotel-wrecking, pass-out-on-stage, party-till-you-drop band. And give me John Lennon (rhythm guitar) to write a few songs and keep the other guys' heads straight long enough to record them.

As far as "biggest loss" ... Cobain was the only one on the list who was at or near his creative peak when he died, so I'd probably say him. Not that "losing" a rock star is that big a deal, really....

Well, I was gonna set on John Lennon. He paved the road (along with Elvis) for Rock to evolve. But, then seeing Dimebag's name. I'd have to be stuck on that decision.

I realize not everyone is a metal fan. It's a taste you like or you don't,but he definitely would have my vote...I seen another thread talking about a 13 year old kid that could shred pretty good...Here's what dime could do when he was 18....

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut37z-rKygE&feature=related"]YouTube - PanterA Live 1984 - Diamond Darrell Solo Dimebag Solo[/ame]

Randy Rhodes stuff..Eddie van halen..He could play anything.

It hasta be Marley

With all respect due to nearly all the individuals on that list and many others mentioned here, I have to agree with a previous post that Marley was probably the greatest loss. He's not even my favorite artists on the list, but I've traveled to nearly 40 countries and I must say that Marley's music is the most recognized across the board. If you put up a picture of Jesus and a picture of Marley and ask which one people know (talking about around the world here, not Circleville), my guess is that it'd be pretty darn close. I've seen people from Malawi to Thailand to Brazil to Mexico to Alabama be inspired by this man. He was not only an unbelievable musician, but also a spiritual and political leader. In that respect, Marley's represents a much larger loss to the world.

In my humblest of opinions, the list is very west-centric (dare I say US-centric, which is fine since this is a US website) and Marley is the one that transcends east, west, black, white, christian, muslim and everything in between.

Thanks for the post...

I have to agree with ya powerlifter. What Dime did on the axe was legendary and he will be missed in the metal world.

Robert Fripp, guitarist for King Crimson. The thing about musicians influenced by Robert Fripp is... they were musicians first most likely. In any case, to so many people Robert Fripp IS the progressive rock movement. Most of my favorite guitarists cite this guy as one of their main influences.

Fame, sure.......perception of talent, not a chance. Dime was one of the best guitarists in 30 years.........IMO

As an aside, I love Pantera and Dimebag. I mean Pantera's career lines up almost exactly with Slayer, and I'd say that Slayer's a more influential metal band than Pantera. Are Kerry King and Jeff Hannerman better? Of course that's all a matter of opinion but one thing is for certain, they're not a bigger loss because they're not gone yet. What I DO know is, every time I go to a metal show I don't hear a bunch of douchebags yelling "PANTERA" as loud as they can whenever they think one other person might hear them, but I hear people yelling "SLAYER" all the time.

Sure, Dime could shred, and again "best" is only an opinion but I'll take Steve Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, and Shaun Lane who can melt face but have some versatility and scope to their play.

Cant really argue. I still say Eddie Van Halen is probably THE best overall, yet its hard to pass up Hendrix, since he basically invented what guitar playing has become over the past 20-30 years. Kinda hard to pick just one I guess.

There is alot of great axe men out there in the world of metal, thrash, and whatever music the indivdual prefers. Dime (RIP) is passed to metal heaven with Jimi, Randy and the others that I didn't mention. Everybody has a type of music they love. To follow the discussion of the thread title Greatest Dead Rock Stars, Eddie, Satriani, Vai and Kerry King are IMO are in the top five of metal gods on the axe, but they are still alive. The best ever is Randy Rhoads hands down, he paved the way for Eddie, Satriani, Vai, Dime, Alex Skolnick and Kerry King, Kirk Hammet, shit can not forget Dave Mustaine.
