Gene Smith (Former AD, ‘10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

I wonder if Gene would spill the proverbial beans on other violations if he were fired... Blackmail! Lord knows what else he knows about that hasn't been brought to the attention of the NCAA.

I agree that he needs replaced, though. Not sure why he hasn't been removed of his position yet.

I imagine there would be a confidentiality agreement in his settlement. He does have four years remaining on his contract, so everything has to be negotiated prior to his leaving.

Just because it needs to be shown again...as much as it hurts. Post #11

I live in Phoenix and am a season ticket holder to ASU baseball -- one of the numerous formerly distinguished programs Smith has managed to run into the ground. This is truly the best possible choice for ASU and the worst possible choice for OSU. Smith has exactly one redeeming characteristic -- he's Black; but after all, if it wasn't for affirmative action, Holbrook would still be teaching second grade in Georgia. Apparently there's only one criterion for selection in Holbrook's book.
Smith has created a huge athletics department deficit here; he is a truly inept fund raiser who is completely unorganized and has no clue to go about anything. The building programs have languished. The baseball, wrestling, and basketball teams have been absolutely destroyed under his tenure and may never recover. In alumni/supporter events he's detached and communes only with a small group of backers who have moved into the department like vultures. They have hacked large numbers of department employees in the past couple of years in an attempt to balance the books, which still hasn't worked. In speaking with him you wonder if he's really as dumb as he comes across, or if it's an act. The athletics department is currently under NCAA investigation for a number of football violations, including the use of autos provided by department employees, academic fraud, and other maladies, and he has no handle on any of these things whatsoever.
I was truly astounded when I read this story. This guy is much worse than Jim Jones. Say good-bye to proud athletic tradition, integrity, and fiscal soundness at OSU if he comes on board for the sake of stoking Holbrook's political correctness agenda.

We were warned. I don't know who may have actually been responsible, but if this guy knew the issues associated with Gene, I wish someone at tOSU would have. Can't believe how spot on this was. :(

Has that post been GPA'd yet?

EDIT: Nevermind.

Just realized no sweeping changes will (at least not probable) be made, in terms of leadership, under after March since Ohio State is the hosting school of the Columbus, Ohio tournament site for the Men's Basketball Tournament at Nationwide.

I doubt the school would change multiple executives positions with the tournament just three months away, unless someone gets arrested or another type of criminal matter.

Probably after June (academic year) and the Big Ten Baseball Tournament, if the school is going to start anew (effective at the end of the university fiscal year or so).

Gordon Gee responds

Mr. BestBuck36:

Thank you for writing. I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns regarding the football program, as well as your thoughts on how to move forward.

Sincerely,
E. Gordon Gee
President
Got his response to my email regarding the firing of Gene Smith/Doug Archie.

Surprised he responded so quickly honestly.

Maybe it makes no difference but the silent majority has never accomplished anything. Write to the people you elect into office.

As satisfying and cathartic as firing Gene would be for all of us...he does know where the skeletons are buried, and the last firing of a major athletic department official (Jim O'Brien) did not work out too well for OSU. I am sure his departure is being "worked out."

Is it on Gene Smith's plate that Ohio State is not amongst the Top 10 Most Valuable College Football Teams, estimated by Forbes?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmith/2011/12/22/college-footballs-most-valuable-teams/

He is the leader of the Department of Athletics. Shouldn't it be his fault?

1. Texas ($129m)
2. Notre Dame ($112m)
3. Penn State ($100m)
4. LSU ($96m)
5. TSUN ($94m)
Much of the loss in value comes from lack of participation in bowl games - we know what got that ball rolling.

I'd say he has at least five or six other pairs of shoulders on which to share the blame.

My guess is that it is just a "form letter" response sent by a staffer. Gee probably never read your email, the staffer just gives Gee a "count summary", i.e. something like.....2,147,235 total emails, 2,147,234 emails said "fire Smith's ass", 1 email (from Smith's mother) said "give him a raise".
