Game Thread Game Two: Texas 25, Ohio State 22 (final)

Yes, but not in the Tressel era of OSU football. General consensus was it didn't work well at all.

Actually, I guess you could consider the '03 scUM game but only after Krenzel got injured. Man, maybe it was because we lost that game, but that was a dark day for Tressel as well as Krenzel. So much drama...so many pissed off fans...I'm getting sad just thinking about that day...

Matt Hayes' strategy worked. He writes about Texas more than any other school. It's always negative, so he gets a bunch of pissed off UT fans reading his drivel and emailing him. The emails only serve as encouragement, and the cycle continues.

I'll give him credit for that. I won't give him credit for being a good journalist. He's not telling outright lies, but he's leaving some pretty applicable information out every time he writes an article about Texas. The one last year with the Cal mess was the worst, a close second was the Young-McNeal comparison.
yeah we know the feeling.....except on a national scale.

Scooter1369, I was the 47th RV in to the RV lot for the Michigan game last year. I think there were only 3 spots left when we pulled up. Question: to get a parking spot which will accomodate the awning and the RV slideout -- when does a person have to get there? (seems that only outside parking spots accomodated this) What time do you think this RV lot will open for Texas?

Lastly, the lot to the NW, which I think accomodates RV's as well, does that open the day before and are you able to stay overnight (just keeping your head down)?

We're bringing two 50" TV's, corn hole, and lots of F&B -- plan to get started before dawn on game day!
Thanks for any insight!
We only sold 50 day of game tickets for the Michigan game, to assure us that we had room for all of our season passes. The lot holds well over 100 RV's.

Get there as early as you want. The earlier the better. We open the lot at 4:30ish and the Texas game will be no different. You already know we have a line waiting for us for pretty much every game.

You can stay in the lot to the NW on Friday night. They open in the afternoon or early evening.

I am tired of all the repetitive redundancy on the 155 page thread. I have to admit, I am almost as excited about the environment, the all day tailgate, the atmosphere of the Shoe, etc. as I am about the game. ALMOST. The game has epic buildup, and could be a let down if one of the two teams doesn't show up, but everyone will be bringing their A game to the tailgate.

What is the word on tOSU fans and their friday night plans, is there a good district, street with lots of bars together, a la Sixth Street in Austin? Or does it take transportation to bar hop? Is C-bus a cab town?

One last thing, on the ticket situation, do you think there will be any Ohio state ticket holders or four tickets that would trade two to this year's game for two to next year's game in Austin? From what I hear, Texas is also restricting tickets to OSU fans to about 4000, and if you guys bring your entire band, that could mean even less ticket availability. Just curious if I should even try to go that route.

Pretty much all of the on-campus bars have been run off. The Arena District is usually the place to be or the Brewery District. Both have bars a plenty and busy night life.

But a good night time tailgate in the NW RV lot could draw a kick ass crowd.

Of course, that has absolutely NO baring on OSU v. Texas 2005.
Just so its clearer -- in the re-match in 1984 Oklahoma was ranked Number 2, Ohio State 7 pre-season, Ohio State jumped to 3 post-game, ending their season ranked 9th in the AP, though only 4th in B10 play. Oklahoma ended the season outside the AP top 20 rankings, though they were actually tied 2nd in the Big 8.

Interestingly The top 3 teams at the start of that season in the AP Poll are all now members of the Big 12 (Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, in that order). Only Nebraska (2nd) and Texas (5th) lived up to their respective rankings. Miami took the NC honors that year.
Oklahoma's drop was attributed in large part due to the loss of Marcus Dupree, however, that does not detract from an on-the-road win by Ohio State.

Oh yes, and this means nothing for the September 10th contest.

Thanks for the history lesson. I can recall watching that game, but I was about 12 or so, so I didn't remember all that. I do recall that it was so hot that and the players so sweaty that when they'd get tackled they'd leave this sweat stain on the turf.

When OSU won, some buddies and I went to throw the ball around, I recall people honking their horns and such all night long.

I saw it while boating on Lake Erie, small color TV and swarms of Canadian Soldiers. The Line won it for the Buckeyes that day IMHO. Dinner that night was pretty raucus with everyone celebrating getting a win on the road after the close loss in Columbus in '77. Still wish one of the classic football channels would show that game again - its just not considered one of the bigger wins though.

I think that's if Zwick even starts the Miami game, and if he doesn't light them up it'll be Boeckman starting the Texas game.

From what I have been told, this fall camp is a truly open 3 way competition for the starting QB position for a number of reasons that have been parsed every which way to Sunday on the OSU boards. Boeckman is a legitimate player in this fight notwithstanding the sense by fans that Tressel would never start a RS frosh at QB over experienced signal callers. TB has a legitimate shot.

nothing in this world frustrated me more than the qb controversies b/w major/simms and chance/vince. It never worked out well for us. Im sure tressel won't make that mistake but who knows. Funny thing is there is always some rationalization like one guy being a "change of pace" or one guy has a better "grasp of the offense"(especially in the 2 min. drill) Pick one and stay with them until they prove they cannot do it. Then pick another.

I heartily second that emotion. Thankfully Tressel seems more like a coach that chooses to change when (or hopefully before) the facts demand change, rather than pulling switches throughout a game for situational reasons. Cooper did that switching QB shuttle too much for my liking (Germaine / Jackson).
Likewise, I never understood the need for the whole Simms/Major controversy. It always seemed to me that it did much more harm than good -- especially with two such very different QB styles / capabilities / personalities, and the resultant shift the entire team has to take in chemistry. Maybe I'm naive about this but it just seems it would be like having the team learn two or three play books, not one.
Somewhere it probably works like a charm, but not IMHO at tOSU and we can agree it was less than sweetness and light for Texas when "who's on first and what's on second" described your QB depth chart.

Tressel has five national titles--earned, not pure poll bullshit--while Cooper has zippo. Tressel can adjust to the situation, especially in big games, while Cooper was lost in big games. If Jimbo decides than Todd Boeckman is the best QB we have, regardless of suspensions or whatnot, then I'll defer to his judgement.

Wait a second here... are you suggesting the coaching staff knows more about teh QB's than us? Mili... how dare you.

Needless to say, I completely agree. I think the coaches have earned our trust that they've got a good handle on whats going on.

Still, it's fun to talk about.

We also have not seen Tressel long enough to judge. Bellisari had no competition (keep in mind Krenzel might be steady, but he's not a great passer). Krenzel was the ultimate solid passer for Tressel and rarely cost us a game.

He may have stuck with Zwick too long last year, but honestly had he put Smith in against Wisconsin/Iowa without Ginn/Gonzo it may have been the same result.

Boeckman is a third year guy who has been getting rave reviews by just about everyone in practice.

However, I'll believe it when I see it. This is Smith's team until someone proves otherwise.

Just curious, but how is this Smith's team when he is spending the Fall running on the scout team? I find it hard to believe that he is a candidate for major minutes in the Texas game with this start to camp....

DDN

COLUMBUS | Ohio State's Troy Smith is trying not to flog himself for the mess he finds himself in.

Instead of sharpening his skills with the other starters, Smith will be relegated to the scout team for much of fall camp. Ouch.

Meeting the media for the first time in nearly four months at OSU's photo day Thursday, the junior quarterback said he's trying to put a positive spin on his predicament. But it hasn't always been easy.

"Being on the scout team is a chance to prepare against a great defense, and doing that's always a plus," he said. "But it's humbling in a way. I had the chance to be the starting guy and made a bad decision. Now I have to start from scratch."
