I think it's a bit unfair to label that Oklahoma State team a phony - they played some good football that year. They were just unfortunate to get a bowl match-up against a more talented team that, by that time, was playing to its talent level.

edit: nevermind, on second reading I realize you were just riffing on the shared OSU acronym.

So did Tom Osborn but people don't seem to bring that up any more. "Mack can't win the big games" is old and tired and no longer accurate

185 wins in 20 years aint bad either.

It's not bad, but not as impressive as when it is done entirely at the Div1A level. I expect Mack will become the third coach to have 200+ wins in 20 years at the Div 1A level. The other two are Osbourne and Bowden.

The only other coach, aside from Bowden and Osborn, with more Div 1A wins than Mack in a ten year period is Bryant. Bryant was the only one of the three to win a national championship at a younger age than Brown.

1986 to 2005 (Tressels whole HC career)

Jim Tressel 185-70-2 (.724) 3 losing season in 20 years, 10 seasons of 10 or more wins.

Mack Brown 162-78-1 (.674) 3 losing seasons in 20 years, 8 seasons of 10 or more wins. (Gee, I didn't even get to use his first 2 HC seasons, 1983 & 1985)

I'm SURE I can find several more coaches with a better winning percentage over ANY "year to 2005" range I care to use as reference. You might want to consider qualifying your blanket statements a bit better. :tongue2:

Yes, I understand the basic point you are trying to make, and agree that Mack has been a very good coach. Just wanted to yank your chain a bit and point out why folks get frustrated with hyperbole posing as fact in many posts.

Once again 3 I only consider wins as a Div1A coach to be relevant. Lower division wins are in no way comparable.

As for the "ANY", it was a bit of hyperbole on my part. If you go back 20 years 1986-2005 Mack drops to third behind Bowden and Paterno, and Mack has only coached 21 years in Div1A (22 total).
