Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Heres my prediction for the game:

Finally OSU graduated Hawk, Carpenter, Whitner, Kudla, and Youboty. Now we can play some serious football, with real football players.

Pitcock(DT) occupys the entire Texas offensive line, while the other 6 players in our front 7 pretty much play in the backfield the entire game. Jenkins has 3 INTs and takes them all to the house. Freeman has 7 forced fumbles but only returns 6 of them for TDs. Our defense dominates the game so greatly that they actually give every player in the 3-deep individual Heisman trophys at halftime.

Chris Wells runs for 2,673 yards and 11 TDs. Pittman has an off-day and runs for only 823 with 6 TDs. Smith become to first quarterback in college football history to run for 4000 yards and pass for 5000 in a single game. Ginn has a total of 12 TDs and sits the last 3 quarters. The OSU offensive line dominates so much that Texas doesnt have any defensive lineman brave enough to face them.

We also get a two point conversion off of every touchdown by having Alex Boone take the snap at the 20 yard line and running straight up the middle.

No one knows the final score because the scoreboard exploded when our kicker kicked a 90 yard field goal.
OK, now you're starting to sound like a Notre Dame fan...sorry Chief.

I don't think it will be a closee game at all if turnovers are even. If we take last year, Texas won by three, was -2 in turnovers worth 12 and being at home is a six point swing. If last years teams played in Austin, Texas should have been favored by 21. Texas returns more experienced and more productive players than tOSU, but, the QB situation creates a lot of uncertainty. I'll say Texas by 24, 38-14.

I do have a precedent on Smith, since the only comparable defense he started against last year was Penn State where he went 13-25-1, 0 TDs and 15 yards rushing. Also, after completing 50% in the jersey scrimmage, I am interested to see if he does better in the spring game.

Wow. You really need to get out of the X-Ray room more often...the stray rays are frying your brain.

Since when are turnovers worth 6 points? WTF? If that were the case, then we won the game because we were +2 in turnovers and thus are due 12 points, making the final score 34-25. Better give USC their NC trophy back. :roll1:

As for Texas being favored by 21 at home if both last year's team played, you're really in the lunatic fringe here. If we had Hawk, Carp, and Schlegel back, Young would be just as contained as he was in The Shoe...our defensive scheme wouldn't change because of venue. Texas would benefit somehwat because of crowd support, but not three TDs worth.

But last year's team aren't playing (not notably Young), so no matter what you think, your offense will not be in the same galaxy in it's second game as it was last year. I tell you what, if Texas wins by 24, I'll fly to your house and mow your lawn for free. Our defense under Tressel has never given up 38 points in regulation (most is 34, in Tressel's first year), and damn well won't against a team whose two top QBs have yet to take a single snap on a college football field.

Finally, you do not "have a precedent on Smith". Penn State's defense was better than Texas' (allowed fewer TDs and lower yards-per-play). Penn State is a far more hostile environment than Texas. The game was played in a driving rain storm, negating any real passing threat by either team, and Penn State had their Butkus award winner spying on Smith...did you even see the game? That was only Smith's third game back as the starter, and now has seven additional games of experience, including a pressure come-from-behind win at Michigan and a convincing win over Notre Dame (most yards ever put up against ND). If you think that your defense will have the same success that Penn State did, based solely of the game stats of that game, then you are in for a rude awakening.

Dont forget that he wasnt taking very many snaps in the fall, so it was basically like he was coming back from injury in his first couple games. Then once he got it together he became a much better QB. Also he learnt how to watch film and I look for a major year out of him this year.

There are no stats to back this up. You're wasting your time.:wink2: Though I'm sure randy is on the phone with his sources to find out...

Since when are turnovers worth 6 points?

Statistical analysis has shown that on average a turnover creates a point swing between 6 and 7 points. I used 6 to be generous.

A few other observations.

SNG77 - I laughed at your parody. Could you redo it using real stats like I do?

That picture of the geek on the phone looks almost exactly like someone who used to manage my department. It's frighteningly close. I'm a little less geekified.

Nice Buttocks!

I'd like to repeat the sentiment from many on this site when we appreciate the great contributions from most horn visitors... I wish we played this game for a decade just for the interaction. "Y'all" are a quality bunch.
ahhaha ahahhh ahahahh xrayrandy probably does look like...

I forget who posted this, but the comparison of Texas this year (06) to tOSU of 2003 is particularly fitting. Without Clarett, we struggled mightily. I would certainly give the importance edge to VY over Clarett, as quarterback, more experienced, etc. Before 2002, many of the "experts" felt that we were a year away from competing for the NC, and that 2003 would be our sure-fire year. I've heard this talk from a lot of Horns fans about how this coming year was the year for their NC. With VY gone, how will that affect your team as a whole? Our units in 2003 could have been considered better than the championship year, but without MC, we just didn't have that spark. This is why I think you have to consider the team as a whole, not just the fact that maybe your secondary is improved. How will your secondary perform when they're on the field for 10 extra mins a game because VY isn't out there keeping the offense on the field?

Edit: crazybuckfan40 made the post (#601)

No doubt about it. I also think that it has something to do w/the fact that having come right of a NC season, UT fans realize it's been a really long time since their team has lost, and they therefore think that it will automatically happen in the future. Such feelings thereby bias some of their (see xray) predictions regarding this year. On one hand, I can't really fault them b/c I know that going into '03, particularly w/Krenzel on the cover of SI who had us at #1, I thought we were going to win back-to-back too, and we could easily replace Doss, Nickey, Grant, Wilhelm, Scott, etc. It's extremely, extremely tough to repeat, though. I don't know if we'll be the ones to beat them, but I'd be pretty surprised if UT wins it all. Everything has to go just right, and sooner or later, even if you do have all the talent, the ball bounces the other way, even if it's hard for people like xray to imagine that it could. UT will be up there this year, but I don't think they'll win it all.

Theres a difference between being biased and being unrealistic.

xray thinks that a quarterback that has never thrown a collegiant pass will put up 38 points on OSU. That is insane.
