I've really have enjoyed the UT knowledge, you bring to the thread. So, ditto, stay and hangout with BP.I also hope that he and EngineerHorn hang around after Sep 9th...
I thought Quan Cosby, not to be confused with Bill or Quincy Cosby, was the slot receiver when Texas goes three wide.
Quan is a little more frightening than this guy.
In all seriousness, Quan is a great player. I got to see him play a bit when I lived in Texas since Mart is only about a twenty minute drive outside of Waco. Quan did everything for the AA state champions when he was a senior.
That "gimmick" talk a few pages back..........
I did not take offense. It's a belly option from the shotgun. If someone can consider Air Force or Navy's offense a gimmick, then I guess ours is too (although they don't use the belly specifically).
But as far as the Tech offense goes, I think it is an equalizer much like a flexbone attack like Navy's. It allows less talented teams to stay in games. Navy is always at or near the top in rushing O. I think if you put 5*'s in Navy's offense, they'd still get beat when they played a defense full of great athletes, otherwise the bone would still be in use. Again 5*'s in Tech's offense would certainly make it better, but I still think a disciplined, well-coached defense with good athletes could stop it 9 times out of 10. By the way, their QB is a 4* and one of their wideouts is a 5* JUCO this year. We'll see how much difference, if any, that makes.
However, one thing will ALWAYS be true about TT, they will consistently have trouble in the red zone. That alone, IMHO, disqualifies them from being a truly "top" offense despite the yardage they put up.
The way it was left at the end of spring, Quan was Flanker, Pittman was the slot receiver and Sweed was at split end. UT will run 3 wide at least 50% of the time, so that is what you will usually see. Everyone who has reported from practices says that Shipley is the best WR on the team. He plays either flanker or slot. When he eventually starts I expect to see him at flanker. I could see see Sweed, Pittman, Quan and Shipley with 40 or so catches each by the end of the year.- If Shipley is finally healthy enough to go, do you longhorns see him as the #3 WR behind Sweed/Pitman? Or could he move higher? ...by the OSU game?
- UT fans, do you expect to return to the 04 offense of run, run, run w/ QBs/Charles/SYoung? Or is the wr position deep enough to sustain the passing game?
