Greetings from Austin.
The game was broadcast on Fox Sports West and started at 6pm local time. Weather was about 80 degrees and gusty and humid. Mack Brown said they were just running base schemes that they ran last year because he knew a lot of people were watching around the country. The defense looked very fast and hard hitting. The announcers thought that they looked better than last year's defense. They might be right. The new quarterbacks looked young and inexperienced. They had particular problems trying to run the option and I think that both of them had problems with the speed of the defense. Mack said that both would play a lot this season and didn't know who the starter would be. I couldn't tell either. The wideouts looked pretty good and Jordan Shipley made some highlight catches. But the best guy I saw on offense is their new tight end named Jermichael Finley. He needs work on his blocking but his athletic ability is amazing. He reminds me of Kellen Winslow Jr. without the attitude. From what I can see he has All-American and early departure for the NFL written all over him--a SERIOUS talent and threat. Return man Aaron Ross is the Longhorn equivalent of Ted Ginn. Don't laugh. The guy can flat out fly and had a 60 yard kickoff return and a 55 yard punt return for a TD. If he gets the corner he is gone. The annoucers thought he might be the best return man in the country. Anyway, my summary is that both of their new quarterbacks have good potential (they are both good runners and seem to have decent arms) but they will have problems against good fast defenses. The have exceptional talent at the other skill positions and their defense was flying and hitting out there. The best chance to beat them is to create turnovers thus making for short drives and not have to go the length of the field against that defense. I don't see any team in the country scoring lots of points on that defense unless lots of short drives resulting from turnovers.

That sounds familiar.

Now im certain that Texas' defense last year was a 4-3, do they switch it up to a 3-4 sometimes? Im assuming that they would but im just making sure.

We run a 4-3 pretty much exclusively, except in nickel situations. If you are referring to the NT designation it is because the NT usually lines up on the center's shoulder, while the DT is on a guard. Given his height Okam is more of a natural DT, while Lokey and Miller have NT builds. Miller is a lot like Casey Hampton.

I'm not a big fan of Maxim, but I'll be damned if their website isn't a goldmine of message board-friendly pictures.

When was the last time Tressel had to replace a bunch of defensive starters? I would assume it was the 2004 season after all those players got drafted. I am aware of the offensive ineptitude to start that season, but how long did the defense take to come around?

You essentially answered your own question, EH. Once the defense didn't have to keep going in after three-and-out after three-and-out, they were able to solidify. In reality, the only games where the defense couldn't hold their own were the Northwestern and Iowa games (4th and 6th games of the year). A year later, we destroyed these same two teams once we had an established offense to go with the improved defense. Keep in mind that by the end of 2004, the Okie State staff called our defense they best they faced all year.

the defense took time to gel in 04. However, the main problem was the DL, which had lost 3/4 studs headed for the nfl. Without pressure, talented LBs like Carp/Hawk/Schlegel/D'ANdrea were not nearly as effective.

There were other games, like Wisconsin, where they hung tough but simply ran out of steam due to Zwick/Ross failing to sustain any sort of offense.

By later in 04, that D was playing pretty well... and by the last two games it was clicking better than any time in 05.

The big reason why we lost the Wisconsin game was the bullshit call on Holmes' "fumble" on the punt inside our 20 which Wisconsin recovered...his knee was clearly down before the ball came loose.
