Never heard of him before. Was he a highly touted prospect or something?
AUSTIN - Texas will unveil the biggest mystery of spring drills - how well freshman quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead have developed as potential starters for the defending national champions.
Spring practice for the post-Vince Young Longhorns ends with Saturday night's annual Orange-White intrasquad scrimmage. Practices were closed to fans and reporters, and the scrimmage will be the first chance to see whether either QB has the chops to replace Young next season.
"Those guys have really come on and improved," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "You don't know how they will respond Saturday night, but we will see it when you see it."
The team will go through its regular game-day routine, including a pre-game meal and meetings before the evening scrimmage at Royal-Memorial Stadium, which will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest.
More than 40,000 fans watched last year's scrimmage, and Brown has asked for a large turnout again.
"(The quarterbacks) practice really well, but that's why we need a huge crowd," he said. "It needs to be a game-like atmosphere."
Brown named McCoy, who redshirted last season, his No. 1 quarterback when spring drills started. He wanted to give Snead, who was still in high school last fall, time to mature. Brown said Snead will get a chance to compete for the job in time for the 2006 season opener.
The Longhorns open the season at home Sept. 2 against North Texas. The next week, Texas plays Ohio State in Austin.
Texas was left short on quarterback experience when Young decided to enter the NFL draft after leading the Longhorns to a 13-0 record and the 2005 national championship.
Last season's backup, Matt Nordgren, was a senior, leaving McCoy and Snead as the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
Young was 30-2 as a starter and the Texas career leader in total offense (9,167 yards), touchdowns (81) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (37).
"You find a Vince once in a lifetime," Brown said.
Most of what Texas fans know about the freshmen comes from impressive high school resumes.
McCoy threw 116 touchdown passes at Class 2A Jim Ned High School, which ranked No. 2 in Texas prep history. He ran the scout team last season and occasionally took snaps with the second-team offense.
Snead was a high school All-American last season, leading Stephenville to the Class 4A semifinals. He enrolled in college this spring and traveled with the team to the White House to meet President Bush.
