Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Those comments are odd on many levels. First he is reportedly in the 250 to 255 range and in better shape than last year, not that he was fat at all. He has been getting lots of snaps on both sides of the ball, with Ramonce Taylor out for the spring. Most importantly at RB he his keeping his pad level lower and running through people, and he will likely still be used as a short yardage specialist regardless of where else he plays. The only way he moves up to 3rd string RB is if RT becomes inelligible.

The All Big 12 comment playing on the D-line is odd. He is a DE and the DE who is getting all the spring accolades so far is Orakpo, who backed up both sides last year. As for the starters, Crowder will be pre-season all Big 12, but Robison probably deserves it more. (Robison by the way was Big 12 track and field athlete of the week last week for winning the shot and discus at a meet and being well over the regional qualifying marks). I would be happy if Melton developed at DE to the point that he could be the backup on one side. On the other hand two incoming Freshman Eddie Jones and Lamar Houston, may battle to fill that role.

I'll know more after the spring game on Saturday.

Never heard of him before. Was he a highly touted prospect or something?

He was an all-everything prospect from a small town with good speed. He's had absolutely terrible luck. Two different leg injuries have sidelined him for two consecutive years, and he's never played a down of college ball. We shall see if he has recovered, or whether he turns out to be one of those "can't miss" stars who never achieves anything. Poor guy.

The guy has phenomenal speed. He has phenomenal hands. He is the state of Texas's aformentioned all-time leading reciever in catches and TD's, also #2 Nationally. I dont mean to home (although I am) but any body who has watched Jordan early on will tell you he was the best reciever on the team the day he stepped onto campus two years ago as a freshman. Despite his injuries, which have been circumstances, as well as luck and overtraining, everytime he's played in the offseason, there has been a level of consistency with his game that is scary. He's had injuries, but his speed looks every bit as good as its always been. He's had to sit out, but he remains the most polished route runner with the most fly-paper hands on the team all along the way.

This last year, unfortunately, a late summer hammy pull sidelined him the first game or so, and by the time he was well enough to play, the others were playing so well, and he wasn't absolutely needed, that he decided to stay out, do another supplemental surgery to get absolutely 100% w/ his knee, (which was healed but maybe 90-95%), and save for one good go. Now that he's back, he's as good as ever, maybe smarter and more diligent after his trials. And just as he was 2 years ago at the beginning, he's going to be whichever quarterback we have's best friend come the Fall.

Update on Texas QBs in Spring Practice

Rivals (free) LINK

AUSTIN - Texas will unveil the biggest mystery of spring drills - how well freshman quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead have developed as potential starters for the defending national champions.
Spring practice for the post-Vince Young Longhorns ends with Saturday night's annual Orange-White intrasquad scrimmage. Practices were closed to fans and reporters, and the scrimmage will be the first chance to see whether either QB has the chops to replace Young next season.
"Those guys have really come on and improved," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "You don't know how they will respond Saturday night, but we will see it when you see it."
The team will go through its regular game-day routine, including a pre-game meal and meetings before the evening scrimmage at Royal-Memorial Stadium, which will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest.
More than 40,000 fans watched last year's scrimmage, and Brown has asked for a large turnout again.
"(The quarterbacks) practice really well, but that's why we need a huge crowd," he said. "It needs to be a game-like atmosphere."
Brown named McCoy, who redshirted last season, his No. 1 quarterback when spring drills started. He wanted to give Snead, who was still in high school last fall, time to mature. Brown said Snead will get a chance to compete for the job in time for the 2006 season opener.
The Longhorns open the season at home Sept. 2 against North Texas. The next week, Texas plays Ohio State in Austin.
Texas was left short on quarterback experience when Young decided to enter the NFL draft after leading the Longhorns to a 13-0 record and the 2005 national championship.
Last season's backup, Matt Nordgren, was a senior, leaving McCoy and Snead as the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
Young was 30-2 as a starter and the Texas career leader in total offense (9,167 yards), touchdowns (81) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (37).
"You find a Vince once in a lifetime," Brown said.
Most of what Texas fans know about the freshmen comes from impressive high school resumes.
McCoy threw 116 touchdown passes at Class 2A Jim Ned High School, which ranked No. 2 in Texas prep history. He ran the scout team last season and occasionally took snaps with the second-team offense.
Snead was a high school All-American last season, leading Stephenville to the Class 4A semifinals. He enrolled in college this spring and traveled with the team to the White House to meet President Bush.

I just got back from the spring game and was very pleased with what I saw. Both QBs have strong accurate arms. They were mostly throwing short routes, but were able to complete passes into tight coverage. (Note that Tarel Brown, starting CB didn't play, and Michael Griffin SS only played the first series). Snead is much bigger than Colt and looks more like a pro prospect, but Colt was getting it done against the first team. At one point Snead was 7 for 9 for 85 yards with the second team against the second team. He struggled a little against the first team later. Both QBs showed some wheels, with Snead getting a 21 yard TD run (officially called dead by contact at the five). Colt made a few yards off the zone read too, but is not a big threat.

Jermichael Finley (RS-FR TE) was easily the player of the game he was making blocks, getting open and catching everything. He had a 31 yard TD. Eventually the defense had to double cover him (LB under, safety over). Tweedie also had a nice catch and did a good job blocking, by Finley is looking like he will take the starting job. He is much better than David Thomas ever was.

Jordan Shipley (Slot/FL) was a magician catching the ball. He had a truly unbelievable diving catch that looked like it might be intercepted. He looked even better than he did those first few practices as a true Freshman. There was a brief scare when he went down, but it appears that he only had the wind knocked out of him. Myron Hardy (SE) and Nates Jones (FL) both made some good catches too and will give us better quality depth. Sweed and Cosby sat almost the entire game to give the 2nd and 3rd team guys more work.

Charles, Melton and Ogbannaya had a few nice runs, but were not impressive overall. Selvin did not play. There was not a lot of running up the middle as the DTs did a good job stopping up the middle, in fact the entire front 7 on defense was really good. Fortunately we don't have to play a front seven that good next season, because the running game was mediocre.

On the offensive line, Hills was solid as expected, and to me looked better than Scott this time last year. Cedric Dockery appears to have won the contest for the open guard spot. He has suddenly become serious and is playing more like his brother. But, he was still unable to move Okam, not that many can. The second team with Ulatoski, Dallas Griffin, Dolan, Tanner and Hall was much better than I expected. We will have some good depth by mid season.

On the defensive front Lokey started at NT and did a good job. Roy Miller played with the second team and made several good plays stopping up the middle. Even Thomas Marshall (2nd team) busted up a play (aginst the 2s) deep in the backfield. Note that Okam has moved from NT to DT.

At linebacker Kill, Bobino and Kelson started. They played well but no spectacular plays to report. The 2nd team MLB Muckelroy made at least 4 great plays aginst the second team O. He is a real force in the middle even taking Melton down solo in the backfield. Jeremy Campbell made a great stop and INT later in the scrimmage. Kindle did not play, as he apparently had problems enrolling for one of his classes, so I guess he is only part time and inelligible for an official event like the spring game. It looks like we will actually be 2 deep at LB this year, which we havn't been in a long long time.

At DB Marcus Griffin is a player, and not far behind where his brother was this time last year. He played almost the entire scrimmage with the first and second team, and had a PBU and several tackles. He was in on a lot of plays. (With Brown and Mi Griffin sitting and a couple DBs injured we were low on depth). One of our young corners Ryan Palmer played very well with the first team against Snead. He had a PBU and an INT on an underthrown pass on back to back plays. Foster also played CB but wasn't tested. Aaron Ross pretty much shut down his side and had a couple stops in runs supprt. He looks like he has improved that part of his game.

Greg Johnson handled kickoffs, and kicks and was perfect. He even foiled the standard opening kick return by kicking it 2 yards deep into a 20 mph wind, which allowed the scout team to make the tcakle at the 20. The backup punter Gerland did outkick the scout team coverage with a 55 yarder, which Aaron Ross returned 59 yards. Ross then had a 40 yard KO return on the next play (against the scout team). Special teams looks like they will be even better next year. The new snapper and holder were perfect.

Overall I could not be happier with what I saw.
