Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

As good as we "supposedly" will be on offense, when I look at Texas at night, then PSU home and a set up game at night at Iowa.
I don't feel very confident at all.
We could easily, and I do mean easily go 1-2 !
If we split with Texas and Iowa, I will be very happy.
I'd rather we win at Iowa, it's more important than Texas.
We lose at Iowa, we are immediately in a position of being behind in the Big Ten.
Not good!

True. Many people here have forgotten that Texas is the only school that can reload with even better players or players close to the same ability.

Apologies to you Randy.

Sorry.

The talent level replacing the nine defensive starters is not the question. Can they gel as a unit over the summer and fall practices is. If Texas had lost almost their entire defense, think of the types of post we would be reading on this thread from the tOSU side. Texas, at home, with the returning talent we have(most in Div 1.) I like our chances alot.

Sorry.

But your missing the fact that Texas is not reloading, 17 of the 22 players on the defensive two deep are back.

To put it succinctly UTs projected second team defense has justa s much experience and production statistically that tOSUs projected starters. They are also more talented that your projected starters based on the recruiting services. Here's an analysis I posted on another site to prove that.

tOSU returning 8 DLs had the following combined stats in 2005. (all stats in 2005)

39 Solo, 43 Assists, 83 Total Tackles, 14TFLs, 7 Sack, 2 breakups, 0 Hurries

Texas projecting starting 4 DLs had
92 Solo, 74 Assists, 166 Total Tackles, 29 TFLs, 11 sacks, ( breakups, 44 Hurries

Brian Robison by himself had
35 Solo, 23 assists, 58 Total Tackles, 15 TFLs, 7 Sacks, 4 Breakups 10 Hurries

UTs remaining 8 DLs had
35 Solo, 40 assists, 75 Total Tackles, 11 TFLs, 2.5 Sacks, 2 Breakups, 16 Hurries

Now for the DBs, tOSU's 9 returnies combined for
47 Solo, 27 Assists, 74 Total Tackles, 0 TFLs, 3 Breakups, and 1 INT

UTs 4 projected starters combined for
152 Solo, 135 Assists, 287 Total Tackles, 8 TFLs, 25 Breakups, 7 INTs

Michael Griffin by himself
67 Solo, 57 Assist, 124 Total Tackles, 4TFLs, 8 Breakups, 3 INTs

UTs 4 remaining DBs combined for
28 Solo, 24 assists, 52 Total Tackles, 1 TFL, 2 Breakiups, 0 INTs

On to the linebackers. tOSUs 5 returning linebackers combined for
15 Solo, 15 Assists, 30 Total Tackles, 0.5 TFL, 0 Sacks, 0 Breakups, 0 INTs, 0 Hurries

Texas' projected 3 starters combined for
91 Solo, 65 Assists, 156 Total Tackles, 19 TFLs, 7 Sacks, 8 Breakups, and 16 Hurries

Killebrew alone had
41solo, 26 assists, 67 Total Tackles, 10 TFLs, 4 Sacks, 3 Breakupos, and 10 Hurries

The remaining 2 LBs (Foreman and Campbell) had
11 Solo, 6 Assists, 17 Total, 1 TFL, 1 Sack, 0 Breakups, and 0 Hurries

Based on recruiting services? Thats a good place to start considering those things mean a flying you know what.

Agreed, that's why it will be interesting to see if the new linebackers can tackle.
I have no concerns that OSU's defensive staff will have selected the three best guys or that any of them would have issues with knowing how to tackle.

Whether or not they know their assignments in their second game ever as a unit, is another issue entirely.

if we went by how the players were ranked out of highschool its very doubtful AJ Hawk would've been the number 5 overall draft pick

Rgaurdless of the statistical breakdown of each player, for a team to have that many talented players (17 -22) with that much experience returning, dosen't happen very often. Where will this be a huge and maybe deciding factor, that would be in the 4th qtr of a game that the temp will still be in the 90's and a field temp of still well over 100. Anyone from tOSU who wants to dismiss the heat factor should think otherwise. It's freaking miserable right now, and the hottest months in Texas still await. Aug and Sept. This Texas Defense is going to be something special. Is the tOSU offense the unstoppable machine it is being touted as?
