Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Im fairly sure Greg Davis is aware of the fact that tOSU defense is going to lay back their ears and bring everything in the book at whichever QB starts. If while working with Sneed and Colt during the summer and Fall, he can design plays with that in mind(multiple blitzes, ect, ect,) and match thos plays with their skill level, then yes I think whoever the QB is can at least be functional. Sneed or Colt will be OK after practicing against the Texas D everyday, the problem wont be them so much as it will be Greg Davis, if he panicks and starts call too conservative, he's going to get one of them killed.

Lets do a little exercise shall we? Peyton Manning started as a freshman for Tennessee. Tennessee at that time was a better program than Texas was. Peyton Manning was and is a much more talented quarterback than Sneed or Colt. Tennessee went 8-4 that season. Peyton played in 7 games and did not throw a touchdown pass until the 5th game he played in.

Again, I think you're GROSSLY underestimating just how big a jump it is for a true freshman to come in and play at the level of an experienced, battle tested verteran quarterback.

FOR THE LAST TIME, GREG DAVIS JOB IS TO STUDY THE TENDENCIES OF OPPOSING TEAMS, AND SINCE tOSU IS AN OPPOSING TEAM, IM SURE HE WILL DO HIS JOB AND TRY TO STRUCTURE A GAME PLAN FOR WHICHEVER QB HAPPENS TO PLAY. THERE ARE ONLY 3 PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THE tOSU DEFENSE IS GOING TO DO, AND THAT IS COACH TRESSEL, THE tOSU DEFENSIVE CORD. ......... AND APPRENTLY ......YOU..

UTMNC, first, caps lock isn't helpful...

Now, yeah, it's Davis' job to get a game plan together. Great. But, let me ask you this - how do your young QB's handle a 3 step drop? Can they check out of a bad play at the LOS consistently (ie how well do they read defenses)?

Things like that. I don't think anyone will say that Tejas' coaches have no idea how to break down film and such. The real question is, assuming your coaches can do what they're paid to do, are your Freshman up to the task of performing. If your answer is yes, what makes you think so? What have you SEEN of them that gives you this faith.. or if it's simple blind faith - that fine too... just say so, so we can move on.

Then why the fuck did you say these words?

"Im fairly sure Greg Davis is aware of the fact that tOSU defense is going to lay back their ears and bring everything in the book at whichever QB starts."

So apparently aside from Tressel, the D Coordinator, and me....YOU know what the OSU D is going to be doing as well.

If you don't want to be called an idiot, then don't act like one.

That is a beautiful post...

Both will play when? Are you talking a rotating QB system?

Colt McCoy was a high hurdler huh? So he's, I'm assuming, a decent athlete (mobility wise) then. He ran the scout squad, but yet Texas fans would rather have Sneed start? Is this because of the spring game performances or is there some intangible that the fans are seeing?

Snead conveyed a confidence that the fans could sense--McCoy seemed nervous. Snead made a couple of really impressive sideline throws. Both threw bad interceptions, and both looked like little girls when they ran, at least compared to VY. The crowd actually laughed when McCoy went down when barely touched.

In UTMNC's defense I don't think its a stretch at all to assume that the Buckeyes will be bringing blitzers because that is what you do to young quarterbacks at the college and pro level. Also the Buckeyes are a team taht likes to get to the quarterback/ I don't think that UTMNC believes the Buckeyes won't make adjustments. But the real problem for Texas is those young QB's recognizing where the blitzes are going to come from, not Davis's handling of the problem.

The blitzes really disrupted our offense last year, even with our fantastic QB. They even provided turnovers, so our QB's can assume that they will see a healthy mix of blitzes. Note how USC was unable to provide any consistent rush on VY--he had all the time he needed in the 4th quarter--while against you, it was trouble throughout the contest.

Uh huh, because of course everybody mistook Greg Davis for Norm Chow before-Vince. :roll2:

I could draw up a game plan that reads, "Vince: Run like hell!"

I don't know if I would say better but yes, extremely comparable. I didn't think of Manning. The only question after this is do we have examples of q-backs who did play and play well as freshman.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest looking at the freshman seasons of Michael Vick and former Longhorn Major Applewhite. I think all Longhorn fans know that our QB position is a question mark. However just because they are they freshman, does not necessarily mean they will fail.

Admittedly what I'm about to post has no real bearing on the 2006 squad.. but, it's something to think about where Texas Freshman QB's are concerned.

In 1998, R-Fr Major Applewhite started from game two on Texas went 9-3 (Incidently, Applewhite lost his first 2 games (to UCLA (10-2) and Kansas St. (11-2)) The longhorns had a pretty good TB by the name of Rickey Williams (ahem... Heisman winner)... Edit - in fact, looking at the Statistical leaders from 1998, Texas had some pretty good players on both sides of the ball... Jammer and 1,000 yard WR McGarity just to name a couple.
The last time the Longhorns started a season with a Frosh at QB:
1993 - Shea Morenz. Texas went 5-5-1. Of course, in 1993, Texas was not coming off a National Championship, and - while I can't say for sure - the talent level was probably less (having gone 6-5 in 92)
