Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

We will call it simple blind faith, and that's pretty much what it will have to be because between now and gametime the happenings on the UT practice field will be known to very few. All I can base my opinion on is just the basics, and that being Both have huge unproven potential, both came from programs that ran the one back set, both didn't get those gaudy numbers in H.S. by simply showing up on friday nights.

My optomism comes from knowing that the young QB's will have a bundle of talent surrounding them, does that mean it will prevent mistakes, mabey very costly mistakes, NO, but how can it not help. If UT had been depleted from graduation last year then I can see not only concern for how the QB's would perform, but the concern would be for their safety.

IMO here is what has to happen: Texas has to be able to control the line of scrimage, will tOSU get to the QB, yes, the question is how often, and what damage is done mentally and or physically. If by the end of the first qtr or at least by the half, if tOSU has established dominance on the defensive line then we are BIG trouble. Will tOSU get some sacks, you can bank on it, might tOSU defense get a Int. who knows, the question won't be IF but WHEN, and WHERE on the field.

IMO- if Texas "D" or special teams can create a short field MORE THAN ONCE, the vunerability of our QB decreases. IMO- the biggest factor for the QB's will be confidence, if UT could get a big play early from the "D" or special teams,or however, and get an early lead it would sure help, (I think we all know the opposite side of that)

Will it take a miracle?... NO But IMO what it will take is a game much like two former Horns had while FRESH. Major Applewhite's game against the Nebraska, in Lincoln, did Major do anything spectacular, not really, but what he did do is not make many mistakes and he got the ball to the skill people and let them do their thing. James Brown FRESH yr against OU in the cottonbowl. Brown had to make alot of plays with his feet, but the main thing is he didn't make many mistakes.

If the Texas QB has one these types of games, does UT have a chance, sure do. Is that blind optomism, mabey.

Admittedly what I'm about to post has no real bearing on the 2006 squad.. but, it's something to think about where Texas Freshman QB's are concerned.

In 1998, R-Fr Major Applewhite started from game two on Texas went 9-3 (Incidently, Applewhite lost his first 2 games (to UCLA (10-2) and Kansas St. (11-2))
The last time the Longhorns started a season with a Frosh at QB:
1993 - Shea Morenz. Texas went 5-5-1. Of course, in 1993, Texas was not coming off a National Championship, and - while I can't say for sure - the talent level was probably less (having gone 6-5 in 92)
It's times like this when you wish you could send Charlie Weis back in time and have him win 9 of those games.............wait...were they against shitty teams with big names?

Wasn't Mock a Frosh in 2003 when he took over?

I'm not so sure I buy offensive sheme success at small schools. I might be more convinced if Urban Meyer gets it turned around this year.
so you're not buying success at the small school level, and success at the big school level is because he has talent to work with.

Lets do a little exercise shall we? Peyton Manning started as a freshman for Tennessee. Tennessee at that time was a better program than Texas was. Peyton Manning was and is a much more talented quarterback than Sneed or Colt. Tennessee went 8-4 that season. Peyton played in 7 games and did not throw a touchdown pass until the 5th game he played in.
Curious, why was Tennessee a better program at that time? They weren't coming off of a National Championship, but I do think that they ended ranked in the top 15. Also, maybe unlike Peyton, Snead or Colt have the quality that escapes Peyton....wining the big game :wink2:

I agree with small school scheme theory, except for mabey Jevan Sneed, Stephenville H.S. is about as big time as it gets in Tx. All I know is for myself, Im not so much worried about the skill level of either one of the guy's, Im more worried about Greg Davis going back to the predictable 2 running plays up the middle for a total of 2 yards, and then expect one of the FRESH to consistently make a BIG play on third and 8, ain't going to happen.

Just so you know the small school thing was about coaches.

I said I wasn't so sure. I am willing to listen but He also brought up the Titans. Admittedly the Titans don't have great talent compared to rest of the league but still.

I guess I would say noone thought Davis was Weiss before-Vince.

But lets get to your point - not many were confident in Davis's ability to gameplan for good defenses pre-Vince. Yes that would also be a concern for Texas.
