Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

To be fair, the man that started that offense at Stephenville, Art Briles, is now the Head Coach of the University of Houston and one of the more inovative coaches in the country...That said, he is no Norm Chow
First this:

Dryden said:
Uh huh, because of course everybody mistook Greg Davis for Norm Chow before-Vince. :roll2:

I could draw up a game plan that reads, "Vince: Run like hell!"

Then:

footballfanatic said:
Don't forget that Norm had some pretty amazing talent to make him look good, as well. I noticed he hasn't exactly set the world on fire with the Titans.
BuckeyeNation27 said:
yeah, all those NFL hall of famers he had at BYU

I'm not so sure I buy offensive sheme success at small schools. I might be more convinced if Urban Meyer gets it turned around this year.
BuckeyeNation27 said:
so you're not buying success at the small school level, and success at the big school level is because he has talent to work with..

If you manage to follow noone talked or cared about Stephensville HS.

Gotchya, thats what i get for not catching myself up on the current topic....regardless, my point was(even if it is out of left field) that one thing that Snead has going for him is that he has been running a very complicated offense for the past 4 years. He seems to be on the same level as colt already with about 1/3 the amount of time to learn.

once again, i know this is out of left field....just wanted to point out why i think Texas should go with Jevan...if nothing else its another topic

We will call it simple blind faith, and that's pretty much what it will have to be because between now and gametime the happenings on the UT practice field will be known to very few. All I can base my opinion on is just the basics, and that being Both have huge unproven potential, both came from programs that ran the one back set, both didn't get those gaudy numbers in H.S. by simply showing up on friday nights.

My optomism comes from knowing that the young QB's will have a bundle of talent surrounding them, does that mean it will prevent mistakes, mabey very costly mistakes, NO, but how can it not help. If UT had been depleted from graduation last year then I can see not only concern for how the QB's would perform, but the concern would be for their safety.

IMO here is what has to happen: Texas has to be able to control the line of scrimage, will tOSU get to the QB, yes, the question is how often, and what damage is done mentally and or physically. If by the end of the first qtr or at least by the half, if tOSU has established dominance on the defensive line then we are BIG trouble. Will tOSU get some sacks, you can bank on it, might tOSU defense get a Int. who knows, the question won't be IF but WHEN, and WHERE on the field.

IMO- if Texas "D" or special teams can create a short field MORE THAN ONCE, the vunerability of our QB decreases. IMO- the biggest factor for the QB's will be confidence, if UT could get a big play early from the "D" or special teams,or however, and get an early lead it would sure help, (I think we all know the opposite side of that)

Will it take a miracle?... NO But IMO what it will take is a game much like two former Horns had while FRESH. Major Applewhite's game against the Nebraska, in Lincoln, did Major do anything spectacular, not really, but what he did do is not make many mistakes and he got the ball to the skill people and let them do their thing. James Brown FRESH yr against OU in the cottonbowl. Brown had to make alot of plays with his feet, but the main thing is he didn't make many mistakes.

If the Texas QB has one these types of games, does UT have a chance, sure do. Is that blind optomism, mabey.

Please print out this post and tape it to your monitor. Interesting, engaging and realistic/honest. I know you think we've been hard on you, but when we see flashes of this (as some of your previous posts have shown) we aren't going to let you off the hook when you decide to troll. If we thought you only capable of trolling, you'd have been shown the door long ago. I know, it's kind of a backhanded compliment, but it IS meant as a compliment.

Nice post. FWIW, it's optimism. Not trying to be the spelling nazi (as we have plenty of those already-and I'm not qualified), but I think I've seen that incorrect spelling in at least one other post on this thread (from someone else).

xray - you'll be (un)happy to know that in your absence the mantle of most enthusiastically over-zealous 'Horn fan was wrested from your grasp, then taken to new lows and trashed by someone with the moniker UTMNC.

I'm fine with that. I decided to lay low for a while since I want to stick around 'til after the game.

I do think that saying the UT receivers are the best in the country is a bit over the top, although they have the potential to be in a couple years. The two most talented ones (Shipley, Finley) haven't played a down at the college level.

On the UT O-line Versus tOSU D-line result from last year, I can't blame the O-line for the poor RB performance. Selvin re-injured his ankle the first series and was rattled after dropping the ball, Charles was shaking so much he was usless the first half, and for some reason Davis forgot Taylor was the #1 RB last spring.

That said, it isn't like UT will be able to run over tOSU in September. Rushing yardage will be hard to come by for both teams, at least harder than against the average opponent.

Snead conveyed a confidence that the fans could sense--McCoy seemed nervous. Snead made a couple of really impressive sideline throws. Both threw bad interceptions, and both looked like little girls when they ran, at least compared to VY. The crowd actually laughed when McCoy went down when barely touched.

Thank you...Now we're talking football people!!...

And I imagine 99% of the planet would look like little girls compared to VY...

That's an interesting observation. I was at the game (and sober for this one ) and the offensive player who impressed me most after VY, of course, was JC...You could just see that he had something special when he had the ball, even if the stats weren't super...

You can see my prediction earlier - and I agree that this will be
A - the toughest defensive test for the Buckeyes offense this coming season, based on time of game and the opponent.
B - Though I'm saying the Buckeyes take it in Austin, the margin I foresee is a one-score game. (Though I'd love that to be proven out as a conservative error).

Im pretty sure every QB from now till the end of time will pale in comparison to VY in the category of mobility. Jevan Sneed graduated early(4 year Honor roll student) and enrolled at UT in Dec. This was a kid who was taking snaps at UT in the First real Scrimmage of the year, while other kid's his age were eating sloppy joe's in the H.S. cafeteria. I think any of us might have been a little timid staring across at the UT defense in a lice scrimmage for the first time.
