Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Im fairly sure Greg Davis is aware of the fact that tOSU defense is going to lay back their ears and bring everything in the book at whichever QB starts. If while working with Sneed and Colt during the summer and Fall, he can design plays with that in mind(multiple blitzes, ect, ect,) and match thos plays with their skill level, then yes I think whoever the QB is can at least be functional. Sneed or Colt will be OK after practicing against the Texas D everyday, the problem wont be them so much as it will be Greg Davis, if he panicks and starts call too conservative, he's going to get one of them killed.
1. how do you know what OSU's D will do
2. you don't know what OSU's D will do
3. your D coordinator is good, but even he can't just gameplan for what he expects OSU's D to do

OK...I guess I'll say something.

My analysis of the defense goes like this.

Last year the strength of the defense and the leadership obviously came from the LB's. With those guys gone, the strength of this defense moves to a very experienced and talented front. We can expect the leadership here as well. The LB's, while not expected to be as good, have shown they can be out there and play with anyone. Several were even lauded by the staff that they would have been starting on other teams if it weren't for the incredible talent of the starters. We have what we consider to be the next great Buckeye corner on one side, the other side will be a question mark IMO. The safeties also have a question mark IMO, but we have seen the guys play that are stepping in there and have good reason to believe they will perform well enough through the learning curve. If I were the coach, I would do whatever I could to get the d-line free (stunts, etc) and into the backfield in passing situations. This will protect the backs while they learn. It does not matter how wide open a receiver is if the QB can't get the ball away. The front should also be much better against the rush, with another year of weight lifting and maturity...

The offense:
Will be better than what we saw at the end of last year IMO. May be the best offense we've seen since 1998. I won't go through all this since I think most agree that the offense is super talented this year. The offense can take a lot of pressure off the defense by lighting up the scoreboard. If we can get opponents into a "we must score every drive" mindset, I think we've won half the battle right there. What we do need to see from the offense, is a lot less turnovers. They can not hang the defense out to dry, especially early...

Now this is an analysis...I'm just another fan and I could be completely and utterly wrong, but at least I think you can see where I'm coming from now in my arguments.

Iv'e already said if whoever starts, after the first big hit can't take it were in trouble. To answer BuckeyeNation27, I'll let Greg Davis worry about how to prepare for the tOSU "D". In reply to Saw31

Colt McCoy- 6'3" 195 don't have a 40 time, but fairly mobile. Played at a 2AA school, was all-state, passed for 9,344 career passing yrds which is still a 2aa state record, 10,919 all purpose career yrds. Like it say's, played for a smaller school which means the competition level a little lower. Ran trck 3 yrs, 100 meter hurdles, all state. IMO- just from the spring game he seemed a little to rushed more than once which led to a an int. Colt is a Rs fresh and did run the scout team last year for what it's worth. IMO- while he probably has a little better touch than Jevan Sneed, I would be a little nervous of him trying the cross the field ten yard out pattern. IMO- Not afraid to run, but would rather not.

Jevan Sneed- 6'3 215. Played at Stephenville H.S. a 4a school in probably one of the toughest districts in TX HS football. 2 time All State, Parade all american his senior yr. passed for rt at 8,000 yrds and 100 td's his 2yrs as the starter. IMO- much more impressive in the spring game. Can make all the throws, has a cannon for an arm, sometimes a little too strong on the short passes in the spring game. He is a big strong kid who is not at all afraid to tuck it and go, which he might have to do alot. I think most Horn fans would rather see him start. I don't know how much any UT fan will know about the fall practice progress, because Mack will close every single practice. IMO- Both will play, but Sneed will get the majority of snaps.

exactly my point. let Davis worry about the D. i'm pretty sure he isn't sitting there saying, "they'll pin their ears back and blitz all day long, so we'll throw slants all day long".

i also doubt that if Tressel decides to blitz everybody, and the slants actually do work, that he will just keep sending more blitzers.

but your "analysis" :
Im fairly sure Greg Davis is aware of the fact that tOSU defense is going to lay back their ears and bring everything in the book at whichever QB starts. If while working with Sneed and Colt during the summer and Fall, he can design plays with that in mind(multiple blitzes, ect, ect,) and match thos plays with their skill level, then yes I think whoever the QB is can at least be functional.
doesn't really mean much once you realize that.

That is a beautiful post...

Both will play when? Are you talking a rotating QB system?

Colt McCoy was a high hurdler huh? So he's, I'm assuming, a decent athlete (mobility wise) then. He ran the scout squad, but yet Texas fans would rather have Sneed start? Is this because of the spring game performances or is there some intangible that the fans are seeing?

That was simply my opinion. Both are big strong kids that are agile, Like every team Texas did not show much more than the very basics in the spring game. I just don't see how they can't help but rotate, unless Jevan or Colt stands out in the fall. If you go by the spring game, I say they were about equal, but Jevan seemed to get the crowd a little more excited.

VY didnt even start his Freshman year. He did play his Sophomore year, and was still less than stellar. Only good year he had was his JR year (last year). And whoever thinks that a Freshman QB coming into "One of the biggest games of his entire life" is going to pull his team through is just completely stupid.

Oh, and for anyone who is interested, here is his stats.

Sorry if the post isnt as detailed and advanced as others i have seen, its late and i dont feel like typing up a book of the matches that you will see in the Ohio St. V.S. Texas game.

I purposely left the entire quote so as to not clutter up the page. That was one of your most objective, observant posts to date. Keep supporting your position with posts like that and you'll be taken much more seriously. I do want to mention that we had an incoming QB with a very similar high-power resume and just as high expectations by the Buckeye Nation about four years ago...his name is Justin Zwick. Not slamming Justin, because despite his lack of big numbers and huge success at OSU, he's been a true Buckeye his entire time here, but he just never met the hype that was heaped upon him (which most likely wasn't very fair to Justin). You may be wise to not fall into the same pit as many Buckeye fans did in expecting the world out of Justin by yourself expecting too much from QBs who have never even taken a snap.

BD- Actually, Vince redshirted his first year, Split time with Chance Mock his RF year and Came alive after the Mizzou game his RF year. If you haven't heard the story by now then i'm sorry.

To say that Vince only had one good year is a bit harsh when you think about the fact that in three years he lost 2 games as a starter.

exactly....there was even talk in spring and summer of 2002 that Zwick would beat out Krenzel for the starting job as a true freshman. You saw how that ended up.

Whatever, Your beef is with Greg Davis not me. Im sure whatever tOSU does, he will try to deal with it.
No, my 'beef' is with the idiot who said this: "Im fairly sure Greg Davis is aware of the fact that tOSU defense is going to lay back their ears and bring everything in the book at whichever QB starts. as if Greg Davis is sitting there thinking "Ohio State will just blitz our QB continually.....I'll just learn 'em how to throw slants and then we will win! Nobody will make any adjustments! I'm a GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!"
