Game Thread Game Ten: #1 tOSU 17, Illinois 10 (11/4/06)

I can agree with that...what happened to the option-look pass in the 2nd half? Where was the roll out all game? The simple hitches?

JT buttoned it down early when he saw the defense could win it.

So I guess the question is: where is your concern? Heisman or beating scUM? Easy to say both...but its not that simple. Ask Troy about his preference. I don't think he will say Heisman.

I couldn't agree more, besides if the team takes care of business next week it will give Troy the stage to shine on the 18th. Troy's stats against Ill or NW simply do not matter. It is the game on the 18th that matters. If OSU wins and Troy puts up respectable numbers and perhaps has a Heisman moment the trophy is his to take home.

Ugly win..... but I'll take it. A win is a win is a win.
In fact, give me three more just like this, with a side order of "Heisman",
and I will be THRILLED!!! IMO, the ONLY way Troy loses the Heisman is if
tOSU loses a game, period.

alot of people seem conscerned for troy's heisman hopes for some odd reason. ts didn't help his heisman run any tonight but then, at this point he doesn't really have too. he doesn't need style points to prove he is deserving. quinn and co. on the other hand... so long as we win out, the worst that will come of this will be a slightly closer vote.

One more thing.....lighten up on Beanie. I'm not ready to pull the frosh's
scholarship just yet. Not too long ago, a freshman tailback named "Eddie"
suffered from the same affliction ("fumblitis"), but recovered pretty well if
memory serves. :-)

the worst i see happening to beanie if his fumble issues cotinue against nw is him not getting carries against scum or the bowl game while either are still in question. your absolutely correct, as with eddie. beanie will be just fine.

We played nailbiters in 2002. Today was simply a hard fought victory... and as hard as it is to swallow every championship team has at least one in a season.

Here's what I saw:

First, Illinois has some top-flight athletes who wanted to make a statement at home against the #1 team in the nation. You know what... they did. Their performance today and their close losses all season show me this will be a team to be reckoned with as early as next year. Illinois beat MSU on the road and should have beaten Wisconsin on the road.

Second, we played the game without our star left tackle and most of it with one tailback who miraculously didn't get hurt while carrying the load. I'm not sure many other teams can win a game without their best quarterback protector and at least one other person to tote the rock. Smith's scrambles didn't appear to be and should not have been much of a surprise.

Third, the weather neutralized the passing game. Even with the wind at OSU's back it was a problem for Troy who had a several balls, including the interception appear to sail on him.

Fourth, the combination of those factors forced the play-calling we saw in the second half. There are times when you've only got a team beat with your defense and you're playing with fire with your offense. I think Tressel sensed that the worst strategy was to force it on offense and was hoping for scoring opportunities from the defense.

And last, an OSU defense that's not going to let us lose. I can see why they won the scarlet jerseys.

Well, I guess when you've only beaten one 1-A team all season, you have to get your enthusiasm where you can find it.

Managing to stop an offensive scheme that was perfectly clear to anyone with an 8th grade education (and I'm NOT trying to re-open that particular can of worms--JT was running clock) is a major accomplishment for them. They can pile back into their orange creme locker room and have a celebratory game of grab-ass.

Geez fellas. I go to work today, and you always lose this one for us. WTF man

I could only listen on the radio today, but I could tell in the second half that Tress basically packed it in for whatever reason, either to keep it close and get them used to winning a close game, etc. Didnt watch it yet, not really sure I want to either. :)

I am usually a pretty up tight fan and over-react to everything in the moment but for some reason this game does not me have concerned at all. First, most of our drives in the first half were awesome. We moved the ball with ease for the most part. After we went up 17-0 and the way our D DOMINATED I knew JT would button it up. When we went into half time Illinois had done nothing... they had that one 47 yard run that was it. Well's fumble most likely cost us some points as well. With the D playing as well as they were I am confident that JT did not let the Stallions run.

I heard a lot of fans say JT just doesn't want to show anything to Michigan when he doesn't have to. I am not sure I buy that either. Even with reigns pulled in you want more then 25 yards in a half (exaggeration). All I know is I am not football mastermind and I called correctly about 3/4 time what JT was going to run. 1st down off tackle left, 2nd down counter, 3rd a vanilla pass route.

Concerns from the game
Wells continues to fumble
Troy taking backside hits
O Line out of sync

Likes
Robo... I will be demonized for this, but I think he may be the best receiver on this team.
Freeman... He played a whale of a game
Terry... Kid has to stay in the field. PLAYMAKER
DL - Several great plays today. Chasing RB's down, WR's... Very fast and aggressive unit.

Overall I would love to see us be more productive, but it might be a good opportunity for us to learn as well. Whether JT was holding back for the scUM game.. who knows, who cares I will take a 17-10 not even close win any day of the week. At this point it is JUST WIN BABY!
