You are very welcome. You deserve that kind of welcome when you decide to register and post kneejerk BS on a day when the team "struggles."

I would have to question such a "fan."

However, you are about par for the course today...most of this "fan"base does not deserve this team or this coach.

Lost in all of the drama, was the fact that the Bucks have won 10 games in a season (again). JT continues to rule in the month of November, (stats guys help me out), and we are one week closer to defining what being a Buckeye is all about (okay, I stole that one).

it wasn't the score that i felt was the issue it was the number of tackles for loss we had. it was like we went into the game without having seen illinois on film.

It happens. We had some games in 2002 that were tough too. Also, Illinois knew we wanted to work on the clock so they load up vs. the run. Finally, they are a lot better than their record would indicate. Zook is building a very good defense.

Ohio State-Illinois report card
By JON SPENCER

OFFENSIVE LINE
Utility man Tim Schafer started at left tackle for Alex Boone (undisclosed foot injury), with the Buckeyes taking the opening kickoff 80 yards in 14 plays for a touchdown. Overall, the running game struggled to top 100 yards, but some of the credit has to go to a vastly improved Illini defense.
GRADE: C
RUNNING GAME
Antonio Pittman had a rough day (58 yards on career-high 32 carries), but not as rough as Chris Wells. He slammed his helmet to the turf on the sidelines after fumbling untouched at the Illini 34 in the second quarter. It was his fourth fumble of the season and stole attention away from his 2-yard TD plunge to open the game. Troy Smith got most of Wells? carries after that turnover. It may become a trend.
GRADE: C minus

PASSING GAME
A couple of passes sailed on Troy Smith, which could be blamed on an always wind-swept Memorial Stadium. He also had trouble spotting open receivers and, as usual, faced more pressure than usual, getting sacked three times. He didn?t put up Heisman numbers (13 of 23, 108 yard, one INT), but the trophy is a lock as long as OSU keeps winning.
GRADE: C

DEFENSIVE LINE
The front four didn?t generate as much heat as expected, failing to record a sack against a team that had given up a league-high 25. Quinn Pitcock returned to action after missing last week?s game with a concussion. Lawrence Wilson made a fumble-causing hit that led to an OSU touchdown.
GRADE: B

LINEBACKERS
Curtis Terry, who has become a fixture on the strong side, recovered a first-half fumble that led to a touchdown. He also jarred the ball loose from QB Juice Williams but was denied a forced fumble when replay officials ruled that Williams? arm was going forward on an incomplete pass. James Laurinaitis had a big fourth-quarter pick and also led OSU with 11 tackles.
GRADE: A minus

DEFENSIVE BACKS
The secondary helped make Juice Williams look like the true freshman that he is, prompting a switch to former No. 1 quarterback Tim Brasic late in the third quarter. The two connected on only 14 of 35 passes for 134 yards, but the DBs got help ? four pass breakups -- from the front seven
GRADE: A

SPECIAL TEAMS
Don?t want to jinx him, but Aaron Pettrey has quietly converted eight of his last nine field goals, including a 50-yarder Saturday. Makes the two PATs he?s missed this season a little easier to swallow. A.J. Trapasso was up and down, but he had punts of 60 and 55 yards in the fourth quarter. The latter snuffed out any chance of a last-gasp comeback.
GRADE: A minus

COACHING
Jim Tressel showed incredible faith, giving fumble-prone Chris Wells the ball for a goal-line TD on the opening series. That faith may have run out after Wells? second quarter fumble ? his third in the last four games. With Northwestern pulling an upset at Iowa, Tressel doesn?t have to worry now about a letdown next week in Evanston.
GRADE: B

I guess I am in need of some cocaine or something, because this one didn't have me nervous at all. Even whn they scored the "excuse me" touchdown I was pretty much non-plussed. There is a comfort level with this team, they know how to win.

I remember being nervous as hell every game in '02. I didn't really belive in that team until the Purdue game. I felt that we were in control of this game and that the second half was all Tresselball. I would be more worried about the line had Boone not bee out. Pitt did not run left nearly as much as usual. I am concerned about Beanie. He really needed a fumble free day to build the confidence. I thought Tress would have went back to him if the game had not been so close in the 2nd half.

I had two main oberservations: the play calling was frustrating. Run-run and then 2-wide set on 3rd all second half. Troy didn't seem to have a safety valve and Ginn/Gonzo seemed to be running too long of routes with the pressure Troy was getting. I think this will give us some great tape to better plan for scUM. The second thing that hit me during this game was that Troy never looked really comfortable today. Maybe he left his Superman cape at home. It did seem that after that Beanie fumble that Tress went to a different gameplan. Maybe he was just as frustrated that Tress decided to button it up so early too.

Like many of you on here, I'm not worried. I'm actuall a little relieved. I was good to get this out of the system. I would have been a little more queazy about going up against scUM without being really tested late in a game.

This game really haven't changed anything. We are going to get healthier next week against NW before the showdown and play better. In other words, we are still very much in position to play for the NC.

Quinn is back in contention for the Heisman. If Troy has a big game against Michigan or if Quinn has a poor game against SC, the Heisman still goes to Smith.

The only thing that could hurt us as a result of the score is that we might lose a couple of recruits to Illinois. Knowing the kind of recruiter that Zook is, it won't surprise me if recruits from the state of Illinois would want to play for the home team.

Without cable, I listened to the game while working on getting
that water mark out of the oak threshold. With some steel wool
and elbow grease, voila! looks like new.

Fret the things you can control, let go of those you can't.

BTW, "nonplused" actually means "surprised." So I was
not nonplused by the closeness of the game.

Buckeyes Get a Scare With 17-10 Victory

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Ohio State started comfortably and appeared in control. By the end, the top-ranked Buckeyes were getting their first real scare of the season.

"I don't know what (being the) overwhelming favorite does for us. It doesn't spot us any points, or get us any first downs," Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said Saturday after his team built a 17-point halftime lead and hung on to beat stubborn Illinois 17-10.

"So what does it say that we got taken against the wall? Everybody can get taken against the wall," Tressel said.

The Buckeyes (10-0, 6-0, Big Ten) had won each of their first nine games by at least 17 points, but let this one get close, just as rival Michigan did earlier in the day against Ball State.

"A win is a win any which way you look at it," said Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, who threw for only 108 yards. "Whether you score 50 points or 17 _ not the way you want to _ who cares? We won today and will continue to grow."

Rashard Mendenhall's 3-yard TD run with 1:40 to go brought Illinois within seven and after Ohio State's Brian Robiskie's recovered an onside kick the Buckeyes couldn't run out the clock.

"I told the guys on Thursday it's going to come down to an onside kick. It's a critical play," Illinois coach Ron Zook said. "When I saw the ball in the air I really thought we were going to get it, but it wasn't meant to be."

A.J. Trapasso's 55-yard punt gave the Illini (2-8, 1-5) got the ball at its own 2 with four seconds left and 98 yards to go. But there was no miracle. The Illini completed a short pass to Derrick McPhearson, who lateraled to Kyle Hudson, who lateraled it back to McPhearson, who was ruled out of bounds at the 19, even though he lateraled once more.

Illinois didn't play like a team that has lost five straight. The Illini clamped down on the Buckeyes' running game and did a stellar job of containing Smith. The Heisman Trophy contender completed 13 of 23 passes and rushed for 37 more on 11 carries. He was sacked three times.

Illinois had a 233-224 advantage in total yards and held Ohio State to its fewest points, total yards and passing yards this season.

"We knew, as a team, they were pretty much going to give us everything. This was pretty much their shot of doing something big, ending their season on a positive note, knocking us off," Smith said.

Short TD runs by Chris Wells and Antonio Pittman gave the Buckeyes a halftime lead.

"When the No. 1 team in the country comes in, it's a great challenge," Illini defensive tackle Chris Norwell said. "I think we just basically executed better in the second half."

Trailing 17-0, the Illini moved into Ohio State territory in the fourth quarter for the first time all game.

A 13-yard run by Mendenhall and a pass interference call on a flea-flicker gave the Illini the ball at the 11 but they settled for a 27-yard field goal by Jason Reda.

When Kevin Mitchell intercepted Smith with just under five minutes left, the Illini had another chance but Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis intercepted it right back.

Illinois freshman quarterback Juice Williams, who struggled against a Buckeyes defense that was allowing just over seven points a game, was replaced late in the third quarter by Tim Brasic.

Brasic helped the Illini get the field goal, but Williams returned late in the fourth and marched his team to the Buckeyes 35 with a 24-yard pass to Jeff Cumberland. When William took a hard hit from Laurinaitis, he had to leave the game and Brasic was called back in

Brasic hit a 12-yarder to Cumberland that set up Mendenhall's TD.

But Illinois couldn't finish off what would have been one of the biggest upsets in Big Ten history, and the Buckeyes stayed on track for a huge game with No. 2 Michigan on Nov. 18 in Columbus. If Ohio State and Michigan can stay unbeaten next week, the winner of their season finale would play for the BCS national title on Jan. 8 in Arizona.

Michigan nearly blew a big lead at home Saturday, hanging on to beat Ball State 34-26.

Smith was 4-of-5 for 42 yards and Pittman carried six times for 24 yards as the Buckeyes took the opening kickoff and moved methodically behind their balanced attack 80 yards on 14 plays. It looked like it would be an easy day when Chris Wells bulled into the end zone on fourth-and-1 from the 2.

But the Illini buckled down, especially against Pittman, who finished with 58 yards on 32 carries.

A turnover put Ohio State in position for Pittman's 1-yard TD run and Aaron Pettrey kicked a 50-yard field goal to make it 17-0.

Alright I just got back...There were seriously more tOSU fans than Illinois fans....I was amazed...The majority of the Illini fans just went to watch the #1 team, and I had GREAT seats...25 yard line about 10 rows up...My buddy has season tickets and sold us 2 for $20/piece...

1st half looked promising, I just kept waiting for us to come out of the gate and tear it up in the 2nd half...I think everyone was expecting that...

Instead I had some bastards ripping me a new one about Troy being a joke for Heisman, along with the most clueless ass-bag fans I've ever dealt with...I guess that's what I get being stuck right behind the Illini bench with some die hard fans...

Wells' fumble was right in front of us, along with that just miss to Gonzo on that deep route, and the pass interference call against Illinois on Ginn

Also, Illini fans were chanting "Overated!" after the game...

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]Doug Lesmerises' fourth-quarter update
Ohio State 17, Illinois 10

Baby steps. When Illinois scored its first points on a 26-yard field goal with 8:54 to play, fireworks went off in each corner of Memorial Stadium.

That was a feeling Ohio State had not experienced this year, a tense sense of what-if from an opposing crowd. The game never really was in doubt, but in the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes weren?t projecting their typical feeling of invincibility.

Rashard Mendenhall scored on a short run with 1:40 left to pull the Illini within seven points, but the Buckeyes recovered the onside kick and ran all but four seconds off the clock as OSU held on for the win.

Here?s my guess on the fate of backup running back Chris Wells, who fumbled for the fourth time this season in the second quarter. He?ll probably play some against Northwestern next week, but it?s not worth risking the national title to play him, and he won?t see the field against Michigan.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]Doug Lesmerises' third-quarter update
Ohio State 17, Illinois 0

Running back Chris Wells didn?t play at all in the third quarter, and there were times when he normally would have been in there. Sure looks like he?s sitting out for the fumble.

Ohio State?s pass protection is breaking down about as much as it has in any game this season. Left tackle Tim Schafer, starting for the injured Alex Boone, has been beaten a few times. The latest resulted in Illinois? Will Davis sacking Troy Smith by his head and forcing a fumble that Smith recovered himself.

Illinois replaced freshman quarterback Juice Williams with junior Tim Brasic, who was the starter at the beginning of the season. It doesn?t appear to be due to injury. Williams is standing on the sideline still wearing his helmet. He wasn?t playing well though, and it might be a good time for the freshman to watch a dominant defense from the sideline.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]Doug Lesmerises' second-quarter update
Ohio State 17, Illinois 0

Let the debate begin. Chris Wells fumbled for the fourth time this season in the second quarter, but this was far worse than any of the others. He wasn?t being tackled or switching hands - he just dropped the ball. Antonio Pittman talked with him for a while on the sideline and running back coach Dick Tressel had some words for him, too. But what should Jim Tressel do now? Can Wells be trusted? Can you really bench such a highly touted freshman? At the very least, we probably won?t seem him the rest of this game, at least until mopup duty.

The Buckeyes tried to make up for the Wells turnover right away. Curtis Terry hit Illinois quarterback Juice Williams as he was throwing, forcing what was ruled a fumble on the field. But a replay review overturned the call, making it an incomplete pass. Reversing the call looked like the right decision. Ohio State still mounted a scoring drive after the ensuing Illini punt.

Big moment for Aaron Pettrey. A strong wind was at his back, but the freshman still nailed a 50-yard field goal with ease to put the Buckeyes ahead 17-0. He?s now 8 of 11 on the season, and 2 of 3 from 50 yards or longer.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]Doug Lesmerises' first-quarter update
Ohio State 7, Illinois 0

Impressive opening drive from Ohio State, considering it looks like the wind is affecting the flight of deep passes. The 14-play, 80-yard drive included nine runs and ended with a fourth-down, 2-yard touchdown by Chris Wells.

But the most interesting play of that drive was a pass off what looked like an option run. Troy Smith was on the run left and as the cornerback flashed up to stop the run, Smith threw it right past him to Brian Robiskie for 17 yards. Just another play for Michigan to think about.

Caught a glimpse of what?s to come from Illinois? Juice Williams on the Illini?s initial third-down play. Middle linebacker James Laurinaitis blitzed and looked to have Williams wrapped up, but the freshman quarterback shook free, rolled left and then overthrew his receiver for what would have been a 20-yard gain.

Ohio State outgained Illinois 99 yards to 50 yards in the first quarter.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif]Doug Lesmerises' Pregame Update
DOUG LESMERISES
Plain Dealer Reporter

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Left tackle Alex Boone will not play today for Ohio State after not practicing this week because of a knee injury, but defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock is expected to see action, though not start.

Boone came out on the field in a warmup suit, and Tim Schafer will start in his place. Pitcock is in uniform and warming up with his teammates. He did not play last week after suffering a concussion two weeks ago.

The Buckeyes took the field in a stiff wind, which may affect the passing game today. Long passes look like they have a little wobble to them.

Memorial Stadium is still more than half empty 30 minutes before kickoff. Now we're just waiting to see if Michigan might really lose to Ball State.

Ugly win..... but I'll take it. A win is a win is a win.
In fact, give me three more just like this, with a side order of "Heisman",
and I will be THRILLED!!! IMO, the ONLY way Troy loses the Heisman is if
tOSU loses a game, period.

One more thing.....lighten up on Beanie. I'm not ready to pull the frosh's
scholarship just yet. Not too long ago, a freshman tailback named "Eddie"
suffered from the same affliction ("fumblitis"), but recovered pretty well if
memory serves. :-)
