I thought they missed a good opportunity to explain why Stannis would be devoted to Melisandre when they talked about Shireen getting greyscale as a child.

i.e. They tried all the healers and priests but only the Red Priestess was able to slow the spread of the disease, thus explaining why a no nonsense guy like Stannis (and his crazy wife) would be so devoted to a creepy foreign religion in the first place.

No such luck.

I also believe they made it a point of showing the greyscale spreading significantly across Shireen's face from early episodes to the more recents ones.

Since we know the fate of unchecked scale thanks to Tyrion and Jorah's boat ride, you could maybe view the killing as somewhat of a mercy (ignoring the incredibly cruel circumstances) if you are at all inclined to support Stannis still.

Either way, I hope Melisandre is killed by the Night King or Ramsey or something.

People that do read the books will probably be happier when the show passes the books since so many things are different and they can actually enjoy the show without comparing the 2. It's like comic book fans bashing the MCU because it doesn't stick to the books and takes liberties with characters.
I appreciate them both for what they are.

Many things in the books are so convoluted it would make for absolutely awful television.

I also get why people don't like the streamlining of all the plot points Martin has woven in.

Fuck the books. This show isn't following its own logic. We watched the rightful king, the most just man in the fucking realm, burn his daughter alive. I mean shit, Mel is so powerful that Balon fucking Greyjoy is still alive despite her leech burning.

I don't know if I'll be watching after this season. It's clear that once these writers have to tie shit together on their own, they suck.

He's only the rightful king thanks to the Kingslayer murdering the previous King in cold blood and all the King's heirs being killed, murdered or exiled in various ways.

I think one of the points of the books is moral ambiguity- something Daenerys struggles with as well- and Jon Snow.

Can you be a "good" person and rule?

Granted, sacrificing ones daughter is up there in terms of terrible things you can do to gain a throne.

However, it's not like it's that out of line with other things that have gone down in the books; specifically with murdering your younger brother using black magic.

And if that sacrifice saves thousands of men from dying in the snow, and frees the North, and disposes of the Boltons, and leads to the defeat of the Lannisters...

They probably could have done a better job emphasizing what a desperate situation Stannis was in- but since it's a TV show, they can't spend 400 pages on it.

We'll see how truly just and righteous Stannis is when he discovers he's really not the prince that was promised that will lead the realm through the long night.

Yeah, I'm not saying Stannis is just and righteous- that's Buckyle's thing. I've always been uneasy about his alliance with Melisandre and mostly blame her for corrupting him and filling his head with false notions of grandeur.

And as I wrote, I really don't understand why Stannis started following her in the first place. They had a chance to go into it but didn't so as far as I'm concerned his loyalty to Melisandre is unexplained and totally out of character for him.

Stannis is devoted to Melisandre because he's seen the power of her magic. Renly. The death of the Robb and Joffrey. Now, we can seriously question whether her magic is good or evil (probably the latter). But it is quite powerful. It's not entirely unreasonable that Stannis would do as she commands considering what he has seen of her capabilities and what we know of his ambitions.

Now the rest of us know that Stannis is not the Chosen One. It is either Dany, Jon Snow, Bran, or a combination thereof who defeat the white walkers. Stannis will not defeat the white walkers. He will likely end up flayed or on the wrong end of Drogon's halitosis at some point. And that's just fucking fine by me.

He was already committed to her before any of that happened. What was the initial spark that caused him to go out of character and accept her in the first place?

The child with a disease story would have been the perfect opportunity to go into an entirely believable reason, but they dropped the ball on that in my opinion.

Have you seen her boobs?
I would still argue it's out of character for Stannis to be in it for the boobs, especially right off the bat.

They do make it a point to emphasize how ugly his wife is, so long term I can buy that being a factor.

well, there was that awkward little scene two weeks ago where he tried to kiss her and she denied him. so, he obviously wants to give her the pipe. they did sort of gloss over how she was the only one that could slow the greyscale spread, but you don't really need a long drawn out explanation to draw the connection. she saves his kid, she works her way into his confidence, gives him some fire bush to make a demon baby, and bam, he does whatever she wants because she's convinced him of his being something that he's not.
