Game Thread Game Four: #1 Ohio State 28, #24 Penn State 6 (9/23/06)

Sorry, Clarity, but I don't completely buy this.

While it's true that if we win out, we'll make the BCS Championship game, the other stuff does matter, because it's very possible there will be only 1 undefeated team this year. If that end up being the case, being the highest rated 1-loss team in the polls is huge.

If we beat a top 10 Michigan team and Texas wins the Big 12, it would be very difficult to keep us out of the NC game, provided that there is one or no undefeated teams.

I'll have to rewatch, but I thought he played well off of first impression. Was there something specific you saw today that made you think that?

on abc before, the game started they had kerr and LAURINATOP as the only starters at LB. Not sure if they had the nickle starting again or not. I just can't remember him making plays. I remember him getting a pass interference call but, it was a close call.

First thing that comes to mind is the missed tackle in the 4th quarter on Hunt's run down to the 5. He needs to make that tackle and the line of scrimmage and not completely whiff. That is the only play off the top of my head i can name specifically but I also saw a few other not so good plays by him. On a positive note, he did do some good things today.

The field wasn't in the best of shape and you see him slip. You cannot blame the entire thing on the field though, and I understand that, but......

If he takes a good angle theres no way he can slip. If I remember the replay correctly (the one from the endzone cam), Freeman came from the left of the screen and Hunt cut across his face. He needs to take a better angle so he can't cut back. Maybe I am recalling the replay wrong but I beleive that is what happened.

I don't think being #2 instead of #1 will play any role, really, in determining how far we fall if we lose a game. I don't think we'll slip a spot in the polls because of today's game. Don't think we should. I think we could, though. I do think we will see the divide between ourselves and the next 2 teams narrow considerably.

Four games in, I continue to maintain that the difference between #1 and #2 has no relevance.

To be fair, I don't (at this point in time) see us getting much love as a 1-loss team. If we want to play for the title, we better keep the W's going. Pretty or ugly doesn't matter.

Are there scenarios in which it somehow does come down to a razor-thin margin in terms of a fight between 2 or 3 one-loss teams to get in the game? Sure. Are they worth considering 4 games in? No, not really. Does it matter what we think as fans, since we're talking about something we have absolutely no control over whatsover? Nope.

If we drop to 2, it will be because Troy/Ginn/Gonzo actually looked human today, and because we struggled with a team that ND slapped hard. ND of course, was stomped by Michigan, and is looking flat bad against MSU. Which is to say, that since these early polls are all blind guesswork, maybe the current consensus will be that we're not the best team in the nation -- I don't know, nor do I particularly care.

If I could have my way, polls wouldn't appear until about this point in the season. 4 games in, about a 1/3rd of the way through the season.

Perhaps my perspective is fueled by the site. Am I proactively reducing the importance of the poll in an effort to reduce outrage on the site if and when we slip? Maybe. But the truth is that our guys control their own destiny. In as much as they haven't lost, and started the season #1, if they continue to win, there will be no possible way to keep us out of the game. 1 loss? We're playing for the conference championship at that point, and will need help for an opportunity for something greater. I'm definitely not ready yet to start playing "what if" over a loss that hasn't happened yet.

I don't think we drop in the polls simply because many other teams in the top 10 are stuggling or struggled in their games:

ND is currently down by 10 to MSU
USC only up 3-0 at half over Arizona
Florida winnng 12-7 at half over Kentucky
West Virginia pulled away late against E. Carolina
Wisconsin played Michigan tough (typical Big10 game, like OSU-PSU)
Georgia needed last minute heroics to get past Colorado

Even with the above results/struggles, it wouldn't surprise me to see pollseters take some 1st place votes away from OSU and give them to Auburn for beating mighty Buffalo by 30. I honestly don't care at this point because as long as the Bucks win out they'll be in Glendale. If they don't win out they are at the mercy of the system (just like anyone else not named ND).

I don't want to continue to debate it in this thread, but my perspective was just that everything matters, including media perception. I'll simply offer FSU being BCS #2 in 1998 as an example.
