Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

He had 4 seconds? I don't know about htat. He ran around Hamby and sprinted straight to Smith. He probably should have felt the pressure, but that was horrible blocking. One thing very few realize is that Ginn faced horrible defenses last year. MSU. IU. Michigan. OkState. What happened against the good defenses, Iowa, PSU, Purdue? Nothing. He had a big PR against PSU, but that's a little different story. The kid has serious wheels, but got a lot overhyped. However, i think he does seem to be missing something, partially taking any hits on returns. last year he took them and popped back up, now he's dancing back 3 yards and being wrapped up.

It seems that he tries to head for the side lines every time he gets the ball in his hands and there's nothing that coaches can do about that except coach him up. Almost like he's playing scared. Reminds me a little of Chris Gamble during his last year here.

I don't know, it's frustrating to see a talent like Derek Williams excel knowing that Ohio State has a comparable (even a greater) talent like Ted Ginn not performing up to his potential.

You are the biggest Tressel apologist ever. You sound like Antosu with Troy Smith. Can Tressel get SOME of the blame? I mean he is not infallible. This offense has been shit for 5 years now. He recruited all of these players. He prepares these players for games. Where are the fucking screens at? Why does it take until the 2nd half to even try to go deep.
Apologist or do I just know what its like to be on the other end?

Ever break down film? Ever put together a gameplan? Ever work your ass off for a game then have zero control about what happens between the snap and the end of the play?

I don't think you even realize what you are seeing. If 4 receivers are sent out, the defensive call will dictate where the ball goes 90% of the time. If a bad read is made, you get a turnover.

You can fire out your little insults but I would be more than happy to get into any form of football discussion with you.

Now go play your playstation and win the national championship again.

The problem is that JT must be held accountable when the weakest link is CLEARLY his choice for starting QB.

After 4 bad games last year and one good one against scUM - then a suspension! - JT couldn't wait to give him the starting job this year.

After Zwick played well and made great QB decisons in the bowl game and the opener, JT couldn't wait to insert Smith into the Texas game on the crititcal drives despite rustiness or any other excuse.

After Smith squandered killer field position to the tune of FG attempts instead of TDs that cost the Bucks the game - JT's own words in the press conference - JT couldn't wait to give him the job.

After a crap performance agaist a very, very bad SDSU team, JT was still drinking the Troy koolaid.

After playing decent in a game in which our O-line thoroughly destroyed the Iowa front four, the Smith bandwagon was in top gear.

Now, we once again pay for JT's horrible QB decision .

I know you know more about coaching than most of us Grad but lack of execution just doesn't cut it when the problems have been consistent over multiple years, multiple players and multiple schemes.

A lot of guys from that shitty 2002-03 offense execute in the NFL now and a lot form this shitty 2004-05 will do the same.

I also wonder why the defensive players never have such a hard time with execution?

Regardless of what anyone believes the root cause of the problem is, the fact remains that a poblem does exist and has existed for a long time now.

JT needs to take a look in the mirror and question every last thing he does in regards to offense and figure out how to get better at either perparing athletes to execute the plays he calls or calling better plays.

If the offense doesn't get better 9-3 is about the best we can hope for in a given year.

RM, I can see that side of the issue.

It is the playcalling issue that I always defend.

I'll never tell someone they can't have their own opinion, but I will defend my own also.

Edit: Jax, I appreciate your post and I agree with some of it. However, I am also seeing what is being called and what is being executed. There is a level of fault at JT's feet, but not for what many of these guys are blaming him for.

Wow amazing I didnt think Id ever see you guys go crazy over this loss. You guys still have a great team. Why cant you just fess up and realize this was a great defensive game and they made the offenses look bad. And as far as the refs hosing you guys, thats BS, we made the big plays and the turnovers. period.
WE ARE PENN STATE
WE ARE BACK!!

I know what you are saying bro, but did he see the entire field? Neither of us can answer that...but I would bet based on his performance tonight that he was fooled many times by PSU's coverage schemes. Missed receivers, dump offs, premature throws, etc

A friend of mine went to the game. I'm interested in hearing how well our receivers were covered. Obviously from watching on TV it's impossible to know what Troy was seeing down field and whether or not he was making proper reads. I seem to remember several instances Troy had time but held the ball too long but sure, the protection could have been better.

I agree there is an element of playing scared that seems to be there. I think we can use him better, but we shut down DWill too after his TD.

WhiteUOut, good win. Please find a post in the last 4 pages that complains about the refs. Your board was full of complaints like that during the game.

You are Penn State, you are indeed back, good to see you return. Congrats on a well deserved win. Some are going crazy, most aren't. It was a hell of a football game, about as evenly matched as I've seen in quite some time. The atmosphere over there was insane, "whiteout" indeed, I'd love to see the Shoe that nuts every week.

Games like this are what make the sport and our conference in particular great. No question there were some really terrible calls, but that's part of the game, and I don't personally feel they made a difference.
