Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

here are two small points that may have huge impacts:

- psu's kicker does not kick touchbacks. we may see ginn and/or holmes have some huge returns or at least give osu some great field position.

- robinson throws the ball low. look for knocked down and tipped passes that may result in an interception or two.

His downfall will be passes being batted down up front. It's why he didn't complete many last week...because the pedestrian Gopher front 7 was smacking balls around. I forsee a lot of 3rd and 6 passes that never make it past the line, and then he'll try and run to much, and then....

blocked passes vs Minny could easily become tipped passes for the Buckeyes - love to see a Pick 6 fall into AJ's hands.

Think of the Tejas game...

How many kids came here, saw that and thought "Woa. this is some serious shit, and I want to be a part of it!"
Not Aaron Brown....

Not David Ausberry....

Maybe AJ Wallace (who was already a Buckeye lean)....

Official visits for games are overrated. In fact, Ohio State's biggest recruiting weekend is the first weekend in December, and many southern schools have huge recruiting weekends in January.

The coaches don't particulary like to entertain recruits on a game day, and the recruits don't get a good chance to "bond" with the current players, who are busy prepping for the game. In addition, many recruits can't visit during the season because they are playing their own games on the weekends. In short, usually the best time for visits is after the season, when the recruits can get the best overview of the school, the program, the coaches, and the players.

what about future prospects, like 07 kids? I'd say it's a pretty good way to get a kid on the radar that otherwise would have no interest or knowledge of how OSU could be a good fit for you.

Yeah? So?

Ausberry and Brown weren't "on the fence" though, don't you think? Maybe Ausberry, but Brown surely not.

After 4 games, the season is 1/3 over, and we have enough data to objectively judge ourselves and our opponents based on our past opponents performances against us vs. their average performance.

To wit:
  1. TOTAL DEFENSE: How many yards fewer than their average did your opponents gain against you? (avg yards - yards against you)
  2. SCORING DEFENSE: How many points fewer than their average did your opponents score against you? (avg points - points against you)
Comparing OSU vs. PSU:

OSU Total Defense:

Opponent_____Avg_Offense_____vs_OSU_____Difference
Miami___________417.8__________298________119.8___
Texas___________510.25_________382________128.25__
SDSU___________403.8__________179________224.8___
Iowa____________379.4__________137________242.4___

Opposing offenses' Yards below average output per game: (avg of differences) 178.8

PSU Total Defense:

Opponent_____Avg_Offense_____vs_PSU_____Difference
S Florida________348.4__________297________51.4____
Cinci____________354___________360________-6______
Central Mich_____393.8__________172________221.8___
Northwestern____473.75_________427________46.75___
Minnesota_______503.8__________287________216.8___

Opposing offenses' Yards below average output per game: (avg of differences) 106.2

UPSHOT: OSU's defense holds opponents farther below their average, has improved steadily and is more consistent.

OSU Scoring Defense:

Opponent_____Avg_Score______vs_OSU_____Difference
Miami___________29.8__________14___________15.8___
Texas__________46.25__________25___________21.75__
SDSU___________27.8___________6___________21.8___
Iowa____________29____________6___________23_____

Opposing offenses' Points below average output per game: (avg of differences) 20.6

PSU Scoring Defense:

Opponent_____Avg_Score_____vs_PSU_____Difference
S Florida________26.6__________13________13.6____
Cinci___________18.75_________24________-5.25___
Central Mich_____21____________3________18______
Northwestern____31.5__________29________2.5_____
Minnesota_______39.8__________14________25.8____

Opposing offenses' Points below average output per game: (avg of differences) 10.9

UPSHOT: Again, OSU's defense holds opponents farther below their average, has improved steadily and is more consistent.

It's obvious who the best team is...just let the best team win, and everything will be great in Columbus tomorrow. Not to take away from Penn State. They are a good team. They will just be going up against a great team. They are strong in a few areas, weak in a few areas, and average in a few areas. We are strong in most areas, and average in a few...with no weaknesses. The best PSU can hope for is that it's close in the 4th quarter.

LJB - I understand your point about the relative value of in season and off-season visits. It makes perfect sense that there is a greater opportunity for contact with the coaching staff. I know you were not defending Penn State's decision in making that argument.

I believe you will agree though that JoePa's late breaking decision to cancel these visits remains ill-considered. Setting aside for the moment the case of Rickerson, he was a hand-holding situation anyway - Penn State was low on his list of favorites, this has already left a bad taste in another recruits mouth. Brandon James was clear in an interview that he was displeased with this dis-invitation. He had Penn State in a small group of 3 colleges in which he had an interest.

So that's one down (Rickerson), one ticked off (James) and how many others looking sideways? Colin McCarthy was one of those intending to officially visit. There is no reported reaction from the McCarthy camp. Perhaps he like the others is being polite, or discreet. Regardless I can well understand a negative reaction to JoePa's late change in the travel plans of these young men, not to mention their parents.

Humorous anecdote: (I searched and didn't find it in this thread)

PSU's Backup Hero Cronin will miss the game for public drunkeness last weekend. Good thing they still have their #1 hero

btw, he also is the holder on special teams. there are many shifts in the lineup (MLB-OLB, King & Anwar) being predicted by the PSU boarders, who knows how many will happen, but it doesn't sound like a great way to enter this game.

Putting a backup OT on Kudla tho has to be the biggest worry for PSU fans tomorrow.

They are particularly NOT happy to see Patterson come in in place of the injured Wilson.

Nice catch there on the drunken browsing test. Cronin was drunk on the Minny victory I guess.

King BTW looked good in the AA game, but I recall he wasn't completely solid as a DB, not bad, just not compeltely solid.

A lot of the Ohio prospects get free tickets for unofficial visits, so most of the Ohio kids who matter have already seen at least one game at the 'Shoe.

As far as official visits for games, here is a complete list from the past four recruiting seasons:

2002 Recruits
Richard Washington (NC State[sup]1[/sup]) 10/05/01 (OSU vs. Northwestern)
Kwakou Robinson (Virginia) 10/12/01 (OSU vs. Wisconsin)

2003 Recruits
Dominique Brooks (Colorado) 09/27/02 (OSU vs. Indiana)
Tarrell Brown (Texas) 09/27/02 (OSU vs. Indiana)
DeMarcus Tyler (NC State) 11/01/02 (OSU vs. Minnesota)
Todd Boeckman (Ohio State[sup]2[/sup]) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Dareus Hiley (Ohio State[sup]3[/sup]) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Donte Whitner (Ohio State[sup]3[/sup]) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Ashton Youbouty (Ohio State) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Joel Holler (Penn State) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Turk McBride (Tennessee) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Mario Williams (NC State) 11/22/02 (OSU vs. Michigan)

2004 Recruits
Jeff Byers (USC) 08/29/03 (OSU vs. Washington)
Chris Pino (SDSU) 08/29/03 (OSU vs. Washington)
Brett Gallimore (Michigan) 09/05/03 (OSU vs. SDSU)
David Lonie (California) 11/07/03 (OSU vs. MSU)
DaJuan Morgan (NC State[sup]4[/sup]) 11/14/03 (OSU vs. Purdue)

2005 Recruits
Lawrence Wilson (Ohio State[sup]5[/sup]) 10/09/04 (OSU vs. Wisconsin)
Shawn Oatis (UCLA) 10/22/04 (OSU vs. Indiana)
Jason Gwaltney (West Virginia) 10/29/04 (OSU vs. PSU)
Elijah Hodge (Wisconsin) 11/19/04 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Maurice Wells (Ohio State[sup]3[/sup]) 11/19/04 (OSU vs. Michigan)
Ronnie Wilson (Florida) 11/19/04 (OSU vs. Michigan)

[sup]1[/sup]Washington committed to Ohio State on January 20, 2002, then signed with NC State two weeks later.
[sup]2[/sup]Boeckman committed to Ohio State on August 17, 2002, which was before his official visit to Ohio State.
[sup]3[/sup]Whitner, Hiley, and Wells were rumored to be "silent verbals" to Ohio State before their official visits.
[sup]4[/sup]Morgan committed to Ohio State during his official visit, and he specifically mentioned the game-day atmosphere as a major factor in his decision; Ohio State later rescinded his offer, and Morgan signed with NC State.
[sup]5[/sup]Wilson committed to Notre Dame on November 5, 2004, after his visit to Ohio State; Wilson later de-committed from Notre Dame and committed to Ohio State on Signing Day.

Out of the 23 official visits during the season over the last four years, Ohio State landed verbal commitments from only six prospects (Washington, Morgan, Wells, Hiley, Whitner, and Youbouty); Wilson verballed to Notre Dame after his OSU visit, and Boeckman was already an OSU verbal when he visited. Three of those six (Wells, Whitner, and Hiley) were most likely "silent verbals" when they visited, and a fourth (Washington) did not commit to OSU until long after his visit. Thus, only two of 23 prospects (Youbouty and Morgan) verballed to OSU during or in close proximity to their respective official visits, and of those two, only Youbouty actually signed with Ohio State. So, you could say that, in four years, Ohio State has signed only one player (Ashton Youbouty) who selected Ohio State based on his game-day official visit.
