G Jamar Butler (Official Thread)

He has put so much into the program over the time that he has been here he probably wants to go out on a winning note... you think? I think that he probably realizes he is not going to go out on top and that might be reason for his frustration. However, I think you are blaming Butler for a lot of things that are not his fault just because he went public. I will admit that at times he throws some lazy passes but I am sure that there are other times where guys are supposed to be someplace and they are not.

We were just as hard last year on Ron Lewis for his senior type play...He hid at times...I understand that he has put a ton into the program, but it just seems that he is giving up on the other guys...He just isn't playing like I expected him to play, and his emotions on the court are bothering me, along with his comments...

I think guys have responded after that loss at Iowa either due to his comments or not, but it is like he has not tried to step his game up and got his teammates to come together...

Yes I am being critical of Jamar, but not for his play...He has had a very good year, has disappeared in games but my problem is his antics and not acting like a team player...He was at this point at one time in his career...

Jamar almost acted uninterested in the game against IU, he was throwing his arms up in rage when a bad play happened...He needs to bring the team together and say WE need to play hard, WE need to start looking for each other more...etc...It is about WE not he and the rest...

This is the first I've weighted in on Butler since his meltdown after the Iowa game, so forgive me if I meander a smidge.

My viewpoint is that this is his first time being in the primary leadership role, a situation that does not seem to fit him particularly well. While the freshman are going through growing pains on the court, he seems to be going through them in the locker room. Not everyone is cut out to be THE vocal leader of a team, which is what is being asked of him. He seems to me like the kind of guy who leads by example rather than by yelling or screaming. He seems like a really dedicated player and very hard-worker, in practice and in games, and I don't doubt that the inconsistency in the play and effort absolutely drives him nuts. He just doesn't seem to be equipped to handle it very well.

Not a knock on Butler, but some people just aren't cut out for that role and expecting him to suddenly turn into the rah-rah guy on the team is a pretty hefty weight on his shoulders.

I almost wonder if perhaps Matta should have made it a point to put the onus of leading on someone else's shoulders this season. But who....Hunter? Twigs? Lighty? I'm not sure any of them are capable of really leading this team, either. Maybe Twigs......

I'm more than willing to give Jamar a pass on the Indiana game. He's been the one consistent this season, but not even he can be on every game.

I feel for the guy, I really do. If I were the leader of this team, my passive-aggressive rants to the media would merit me Bobby Knight-like status before the end of the season.

Honestly I am about done talking about this...I have made my opinions known on the situation...Have filled some in on even more details...

I just don't understand why we can't become a team, and i think that Jamars comments and actions are hurting this team more than helping in anyway...

This has nothing to do with his play as you all know how I feel about his play and I am all for giving him a pass on a bad game...It is just frustrating to watch his antics and comments divide the team...

I rest my case. Those guys, at that age, should be past criticism and totally focus on winning. I think you are making more of it than his teammates have. IMO

Just going to agree to disagree on this one...I just hope that whatever the problem is we get the ship righted...I don't like seeing guys get so frustrated on the court in their teammates...Criticism fine, but acting like it is all their fault I am not a fan of...

You can't have your senior, your leader, tearing your team apart. He is the one who should be building them up and making this group of guys into a TEAM.
No more after this about Butler's leadership. All I will have to say is that Lighty was the captain of the traveling team this past summer. Butler was either appointed or elected captain. He did not ask for the position! Just because you are a senior does not mean you have to be the leader. Look at other teams all across the country.

Butler is not the type of guy who will bring the other players up by getting them into the game. He is not the type of guy who will excel at the motivational speeches to teammates and other players. Butler is a production leader. He leads by his actions and that is how he should stay. If anything Butler needs to be in the huddle during pregame and say, "follow me boys, get on my back and I'll lead you to a victory." When the game starts he has to be looking for his shots and making his plays. Its up to the other guys to call for the ball, rebound and play good defense.

Butler will never be a Magic Johnson or John Stockton. Butler is more like a Gilbert Arenas type who can explode with his scoring within the game but will not consistently get 8-10 assists. The other guys have to know their roles and play hard on every single play.

This is also another reason I like Twigs, Lauderdale and Lighty out there with Butler because they are role players and Butler can do his thing within the offense better. We have no court general this year, lets face it. If the players would face it and just play their roles game in and game out we'd be a much better team.

The games Butler is off then he should be making plays for Koufos, Diebler and Turner. Until then, I'd like to see him go for about 30 a game. Very similar, imo, to Darby's senior season except that Butlers surrounding cast is much much better.

Wondering about Butler

Two years ago about this time, the strain of logging so many minutes began to take its toll on guards Jamar Butler and Je?Kel Foster. They continued to bring exemplary effort to the floor every night and, with Big Ten player of the year Terence Dials, carried the Buckeyes to their first outright Big Ten championship in 14 years. But their legs were going, and with them went their shots. Foster, in particular, never recovered.
I?m wondering if the same thing is happening to Butler now.
He lost 20 pounds in the off-season to lighten the load on his legs. He makes sure he rests and hydrates between games. He sits in cold tubs, gets massages and does exercises to help his muscles recover.
Butler will tell you he feels fine. Coach Thad Matta said Butler tells him the same. But would you expect them to say otherwise? It?s not like Matta has any other options at point guard.
The proof will be in the numbers, eventually, and they may be starting to slide. Butler is averaging 36 minutes per game. He played all 40 minutes in the past four games. His shooting percentage has gone downhill the past three games. He made 10 of 34 shots from the field in those three games, and 4 of 17 three-pointers, his worst stretch of the season.

Continued......

Another record for Butler

Jamar Butler set the career record for assists when his six at Northwestern on Wednesday night gave him 517.
Today brought this note from Dan Wallenberg, Ohio State director of athletic communications and the men's basketball contact:
According to Stats, Inc., Butler is the only NCAA Division I player since the 1996-97 season to post a double-double without scoring in the game.
When the Buckeyes beat Northwestern on Jan.6 in Value City Arena, Butler had 11 assists and a career-high 10 rebounds but missed all seven of his field-goal attempts and did not get to the free throw line.
