G Jamar Butler (Official Thread)

Butler Hoping for Perfect Career vs. Wolverines
By John Porentas

OSU senior point guard Jamar Butler has seen and done a lot of things in his career at OSU.

He's been a part of a final four run, and a part of two Big Ten championships.

He has put his name in the record books as the OSU's all-time leading three point shooter and all-time leading assist man. He is also part of the winningest recruiting class in OSU history, which means that Butler has been a part of more OSU victories than any other player.

That's a lot to be proud of. He's also proud of the following.

65-55, 72-62, 65-61, 76-63, 64-54, 94-85, 72-46

Those are the scores of OSU games against the University of Michigan during Butler's tenure as a Buckeye, all of them wins.

Congrats to JB on his career wins and assist records. He has been a great Buckeye through and through, and he has done everything and more that was asked of him.

I was hoping for a Brent Darby type of year out of him, and there is still time left for that to happen (specially with the most important part of the year left) I also wish that Conley could have taught JB that little floater a little sooner. JB is doing a much better job penetrating this year, but as of yet, hasn't been overly effective, as his floater hasn't fallen consistently and he doesn't have the ups to finish on his off balance layups.

Even without a great finish to this year, he will go down as a true warrior and a great Buckeye who was a big part of Thad Matta's resurgence of Buckeye basketball.

Jamar Butler

"It's Michigan. There's not too much else you have to say about it," said Butler, seemingly surprised that anyone would have to ask if the game was important.

"We know how they feel about us and they know how we feel about them. We're just going to go and lace them up and hopefully come out with the win," Butler told reporters on Friday.

"
It's Michigan," he reiterated.

"That's all you have to say, it's Michigan. That's all that needs to be said. It's probably not hyped up like a football game but...it's Michigan."
love seeing stuff like that

Matta was asked point blank why doesn't Jamar come out of the game, and he said he just feels more comfortable Butler on the court as he has been there with him in more situations with him and knows what to expect...Says they are working on trying to get him some breaks...

A week to stew

Jamar Butler, understandably, was not in an expansive mood after the loss at Michigan on Sunday. I timed how long it took him to answer the first three questions. Thirty-four seconds, and the majority of that was questions. Fifteen words from Butler.
He takes losing hard. He?s lost almost as many games this season (nine) as the past two seasons combined (10). So he wasn?t looking forward, as someone suggested, to having a week off before his next game next Sunday against Wisconsin, no matter how tired his body might feel from averaging 36 minutes a game for 26 games for nearly four months.
?Whenever you lose a game, you always want to get back on the court as soon as possible,? Butler said.

No light shed on Butler benching

Jamar Butler declined to be interviewed after the loss to Wisconsin today, and coach Thad Matta was not forthcoming when asked why he did not start Butler.
It was the first time in 97 games the senior point guard began the game on the bench. His last non-start was the first game of his sophomore year, when he and Matt Terwilliger were suspended for violating an NCAA rule regarding their participation in an off-season charity basketball game.
"My decision," Matta said of the benching.

If there was no legitimate reason for not starting Butler, I feel very very bad for him to have his string of starting so many consecutive games as a Buckeye being broken so close to the end of his career. He has given so much to Ohio State basketball.

Interesting. This is the first I heard about Butler not starting...probably because the networks switched to the Bucks game late after ND-'Cuse finally ended. :grr:

Well, I'm sure it wasn't for 'no reason'...after Matta was just interviewed last week as to why he almost never takes Jamar off the floor, saying he just feels more comfortable with him out there...it would make zero sense to do it to "shake up the line-up" or such.

Whatever the reason, hopefully JB can use the experience to refocus his perspective and fuel the fire for these last few games and the BTT.

This team needs his leadership badly imo. The turnovers and rushed shots by this team are driving me nuts.

Nope, they touched on it a few times during the game... after that endless FT debacle with the 'Cuse sticking around.

"My decision," Matta said of the benching.
He did not elaborate other than to say Butler was not held out because of a rules violation, and that the Buckeyes had prepared to play without Butler since last Tuesday, when they began preparing for Wisconsin. That perhaps indicated the benching was punishment for something that happened after the loss at Michigan last Sunday.
Butler, who leads the Buckeyes in scoring, assists and steals, was publicly critical of teammates after a loss at Iowa earlier this season. He appeared angry and out of patience after the loss at Michigan but, in an interview outside the locker room after the game, did not criticize teammates.

Jamar's Journey

Jim Naveau - Mar. 4th, 2008
COLUMBUS ? With the final regular-season game of his Ohio State career less than a week away, four-year starter Jamar Butler is clearly the veteran voice of the Buckeyes men?s basketball team.

But, as he gets ready for that game against Michigan State on Sunday at the Value City Arena, Butler can still hear the voice of a veteran player from the beginning of his college career.

The 6-foot-2 point guard from Shawnee High School has had many coaches and many mentors during his much-decorated career. But maybe one of the most influential was former OSU guard Je?Kel Foster, who played alongside Butler his first two seasons in Columbus.

On the surface, Butler and Foster were a fire and ice combination. Foster?s smoldering intensity was constantly on display, while Butler?s was often kept behind the drawn drapes of the impassive expression he presents to much of the world.
