Butler back in familiar role; Walton in a new one

[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]There are other things going on this week in sports besides the Ohio State-Michigan football game.
Really, there are.
Two of them involve Lima?s Big Ten basketball players, Ohio State?s Jamar Butler and Michigan State?s Travis Walton.
After two games, Butler is second on the Buckeyes? men?s team in scoring at 17.5 points a game, returning to the scorer?s role he played when he got more than 2,000 points in his high school career at Shawnee.
The 6-2 senior point guard had 18 points in a 68-54 win over Columbia on Tuesday night and 17 in the opener against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Monday.
From one in-person look and watching another game on television, it?s obvious Ohio State is looking to Butler as a leader this season in more ways than just scoring.
He has started 71 straight games. The rest of the Buckeyes have combined for 19 starts ? 10 by Othello Hunter and nine by David Lighty.

OSU men's basketball: Butler feels comfortable back at point
Senior switched positions last year in a nod to Conley

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Last week, Jamar Butler celebrated his return to the point guard position with a career-high 10 assists and five three-point field goals, which tied his career high.

One night later, in the second half of a one-point game that determined whether the Ohio State men's basketball team spent Thanksgiving in New York or the Schottenstein Center, coach Thad Matta implored Butler to make a play.

The senior made three: two three-point baskets and an assist on another in a 12-0 run that sent the Buckeyes (2-0) to the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off. They play Syracuse (3-0) on Wednesday night in Madison Square Garden.

Butler knew it would be like this again even before practice began in October.

"I haven't been happier," he said then.

Congratulations to Jamar for becoming Ohio State's all-time leader in 3-point field goals made.

:oh:

Point guard Jamar Butler, the Buckeyes' second-leading scorer at 16.5 points per game, didn't take his first shot until the final three minutes of the first half, and when he did, it went in. That 3-pointer from the left wing gave Butler 154 career 3-pointers, the most in OSU history, breaking a tie with Brent Darby and Scoonie Penn.

Hopefully Thad can get him some rest before the start of the Big 10 season or he is going to be one tired little puppy by season's end and tired legs makes for bad outside shooting which has been one of his strong points so far this season.

Butler has played most of the game for the last 2 seasons...He will be fine...He dropped weight to get in better shape...

I do think that Hill will start to steal some minutes later in the season...

? Crash course on Northwestern | Main | Ball in Heyward's court ?
Butler says he'll gut it out

Jamar Butler showed up for an interview before practice this afternoon clutching a full bottle of Gatorade. He?ll need to get that and more in his body before Ohio State plays Iowa on Wednesday night.
The Buckeyes? senior point guard and most indispensible player missed practice Monday and said he expected to do little today after losing 10 pounds since Sunday because of stomach flu.
He felt bad enough, he said, that he slept through the football team?s loss to LSU in the national championship game Monday night.
Coach Thad Matta said after Butler went scoreless in the win over Northwestern on Sunday that, although Butler did have 11 assists and 10 rebounds, he thought he looked tired late in the game. Butler said yesterday that he didn?t feel he was getting his legs into his shot, probably because he was in the early stages of the flu.
?Right after the game I started feeling really tired and my body was hurting,? he said. ?A few hours later, whew, everything just started coming out of me. I?m down to about (175 pounds). I just got off the scale.?
Nevertheless, Butler said he?ll play 40 minutes if he has to against Iowa. He is averaging 34.9 per game and has played 159 of 160 minutes in the Buckeyes? past four games.
?I?ll suck it up,? he said. ?It?s conference play now.?

That is exactly the kind of attitude you want from your senior players (well, anyone on the team, really). Sets a good example, and it will also make Butler a better player in the long run.
Sounds like a nasty flu, though. I wish him well.

I continued to worry about Jamar's endurance throughout the entire season especially if teams start pressing him full-court like Purdue did on Saturday. His legs can only hold out for so long and without him the team hurts.

Gotta remember that he dropped the weight before the season and he has done this for the past 2 seasons reallly...We have not really been playing back to back to back games like we have started playing since the opening of the big ten season...I still think that Hill can still minutes and you have to figure that we are going to blow some teams out like NW, Mich, Iowa, etc and he is going to be able to get some rest in those games...

Bob Hunter commentary: Even as Buckeyes struggle, Butler breathes fire

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 3:24 AM
By Bob Hunter

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It would be fascinating to get a peek inside of Jamar Butler. There's a roaring fire in there. That's a given. Sometimes you can see the flames in his eyes, and even when you can't, you can feel the heat from 100 feet away. But as the young Ohio State basketball team stumbles and Butler plays every game like it might be his last, you wonder if there isn't something big and mean in there that is squeezing his insides.
Butler scored Ohio State's last 14 points of a 66-60 loss to Michigan State last night and it seemed like it; he was rampaging around the court like an angry bull, creating open shots, drawing fouls and almost trying to will his team to victory. He was the only Ohio State player in double figures -- he had 21 points -- and that kind of lopsided box score isn't new. In a loss Saturday at Purdue, Butler scored 26 points, Kosta Koufos had 12 and none of their teammates scored more than eight. At Illinois, Butler had 32, Othello Hunter had 15 and no one else hit double figures.
Jamar Butler is pretty much a one-man band in search of some accompaniment, a gifted singer whose backup band often can't seem to carry a tune, and it's got to be killing him.

I know I am putting a lot of Butler's shoulders with this comment, but it is part his fault that he needs to force the other guys to get involved as him being the pg...

He needs to come off the screens better with the ball and find guys like Hunter and KK as they roll to the hole, he needs to break down the defense and get guys like Diebler, Turner, Lighty open looks from the perimeter...

He is running the show in terms of points, but struggling to do the things that the pg needs to do in terms of being the QB out there and leading the team...
