G Jamar Butler (Official Thread)

Guard play is my concern for this year. :(

You will see Butler out there for almost the entire amount of the game, so you have your pg taken care of...Then when he is not out there, you will have Hill from all accounts has impressed so far in little time at open gyms, so there is no reason to think that he wont be a good backup to Butler...

Butler is an all-big ten type player and we will be just fine there...

Then at the 2/3 you have the options of Lighty, Diebler, Turner. They can all 3 mix and match and we could also go with a lineup of Hill at the point and Butler at the 2 if need be...We also have Wallace who at this point might not be ready to contribute offensively that much, but will contribute like Lighty did last season...

Sounds like a solid backcourt to me...

Diebler will be the scorer back there, but Butler will have an increased role in scoring and like he said in the article he has a feel for scoring more from the pg postion which is obvious from watching him play, and watching how much better he shoots off the dribble than the pass...Then we saw at the end of last year Lighty step his game up and pick up the scoring, and I truly believe with as much work as this kid does in the gym that his shot will be much better this year, and with that threat added to his game he will be that much more dangerous off the bounce...

Not real sure what to expect out of Turner, besides great defense...I think it will take him time to get acclamated, and he will not be leaned on to be a big scorer this year, so he will use his great play making abilities and good passes to set other people up, and score when the oppurtunities are there, and he will knock down the open shots that are created for him...Just need to see him in a couple games to get a good feel for his game...

So count me in as not worried about the backcourt...With Lighty, Butler, and Turner you have 3 of the best defenders in the big ten in your backcourt, so I don't envision teams being able to score that easy on us...

Did I mention that I am really excited about basketball season... :)

Breakout players for me:

J. Butler - he will step up and have a tremendous senior season.
O. Hunter - Has added muscle and advanced post repetoir.
Eric Wallace - NBA athleticism freakish ability, can be molded into a lottery pick if he says 3 or 4 years.

Most publicized newcomer: Kosta Koufos - will have a great year and may even be a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.

Most valuable newcomer: Jon Deibler - will be key to hit some big shots in some tight wins this season.

Most unheralded newcomer: PJ Hill - will have ample opportunity to get major minutes this year, his ballhandling will be key to beat some teams who like to press or have great gaurd defense. ( Wisconsin)

The only thing I disagree about is Wallace being a breakout player...I am just not sure if his offensive game will be there to be a breakout player...Like you said he has the athleticism, which will allow him to be a great defender, but he still needs work on the offensive game...

I think that Turner will start the season ordinary, but he has the game, that with a little acclamation to the college game his game will take off...

As for Diebler, I would not be suprised to see him go for 20 pts in his first game...

Ohio State men's basketball: Butler weighs in sporting new look

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Several cartridges worth of new ink adorn the tattooed left arm of Jamar Butler. There's the nod to his hometown of Lima and its "419" area code, and to his home state of Ohio. There's the Roman numeral "II" in recognition of the back-to-back Big Ten championships Butler has helped the Ohio State men's basketball team win.
"I left a little room for the third one, hopefully," he said.
Perhaps there's room, too, for the nickname assistant coach Alan Major mentioned as he passed Butler last week outside the team's locker room in the Schottenstein Center.
"Jared," as in the Subway guy, Major called him.
"The turkey club and the chicken breast," Butler said of his menu choices during the offseason, a diet discipline he has maintained since school started in September and the temptations of the "training table" fare became available once again.
"I'll just have a salad there and leave and go to Subway," he said. "Or I'll just get a little. It looks so good."

Butler did lose around 20 pounds and the fact he had trouble with Hill is a positive for this team....

I think Hill will push Butler to improve even more. What an eye opener that was yesterday to see Hill hawking Butler's every move. I love knowing that is going on everyday in practice.

Butler was noticeably thinner to me. I was not the least bit worried that he didn't do anything remarkable at the scrimmage yesterday. He has long since proved himself to me. I think he will make us proud this year with a stellar senior season.

ghter, faster Butler back in old spot

By Andrew Skwara, Rivals.com College Basketball Staff Writer

Thad Matta may want to consider writing a book about diets.

Ohio State's fifth-year coach asked senior point guard Jamar Butler to lose 10 pounds this past offseason. The 6-foot-1 Butler doubled up his coach's wish.

"I've lost 20 pounds," Butler said. "Coach (Matta) thought it would make me better. Now I'm quicker and have a lot more stamina."

Butler said playing alongside Mike Conley, the No. 4 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft last season, inspired him to shed more weight than Matta was asking. At 6-1, 175 pounds, Conley was one of the fastest players in college basketball. Few defenders were able to slow him down or keep him away from the basket, one of the key reasons the Buckeyes reached the 2007 national title game.

"(Mike) was quicker and more explosive," said Butler, who ran a mile nearly every day and stopped eating fried foods. "I saw that and wanted to be that."
