Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

While everyone is giving props to Coombs for telling the players to watch out for that last play he has to assume some of the responsibility for all of the pass completions that were made yesterday since he is the secondary coach. I know that this was mentioned in the LF thread that his name is never mentioned when it comes to what is wrong with our defense. Maybe he is not as much involved with scheming the defense but being the secondary coach he sure as hell ought to be involved in teaching the defensive backs coverage and tackling skills. Some of the blame has to fall on him if we are going to blame the other defensive coaches.

As I've said elsewhere, I don't know enough so I can confidently blame any of the coaches. My mind is open. But at least I can say I love this guy's passion and commitment.

I think the jury is still out on Combs as a secondary coach.

There is no denying his passion and excitement for the game, but that alone does not make or break anyone as a good coach.

I know players have to execute and be put into positions to execute properly and some of that is on the coaches ability to do that by watching film, picking up tendicies, and implimenting that into the game plan.

I am not sure I can pin point why the back 7 has had pass coverage issues this season and in the earlier part of the first season, but it is troubling when compared to the decade of pass defense previously played. I don't think there is a quick fix for it, but hopefully during the offseason it can be addressed and improved upon, if not I would expect some sort of change to the defesive staff.

I believe he hired Sheridan before Combs and I think Sheridan left to go coach with the NY Giants. Not sure if anybody or who was before Sheridan, maybe some from the previous staff perhaps. Combs was not the first choice, but that may or may not have been by design.
Tavers was going to stay on.. that was choice one

His passion means very little if the unit he is in charge of gives up huge play after huge play and his players actually regress during the season.

I think you may be a little inpatient. He can't go out make plays for the kids. And he doesn't call plays. Doran grant actually looked very good this year, tyvis Powell showed improvements, but may be better suited for S, Roby played injured most of the year, but was able to shutdown the best big 10 WR.

And the talent at CB next year is insane. Besides grant, we have reeves, apple, burrows, Conley, and Webb and lattimore coming in. That's a lot of talent and depth at the CB position. He didn't have that this year. And our S provided no help to our CBs either.

This is something not discussed very much - secondary players trusting each other. I noticed it a LOT with Roby. Personally I think he had a bad attitude most of the year and mentally checked out to some degree. Watching his body language and interaction with other players in the secondary seemed a lot like a kid on a youth team that knows he is much better than his team mates and rather than doing what he can to help them improve he tries to cover too much ground and do it alone.....with an attitude. Again, that's just my observation. The secondary didn't trust each other. I don't think the defensive play calling helped much either but I can't find a lot to fault Kerry with in regards to CB technique.
