Pep Guardiola has accepted Bayern Munich's offer to manage the club next season. Apparently put pen to paper on December 20th. Good for him. Que the "Bayern Munich are favorites to win the 2014 UEFA Champions League" music......

Gus Johnson to call FOX World Cup

He has five years to learn, I suppose, but this Gus Johnson move with FOX reminds me of the whole Dave O'Brien thing with ESPN. And ESPN quickly learned not to do that after the 2006 World Cup and improved its world tournament broadcasts thereafter (especially with the 2010 WC).

Don't think FOX cares about the backlash, and there will be backlash, but it's not like ESPN had Brent Musberger, Doc Emrick or Al Michaels call the World Cup.

Since Gus Johnson is calling next week's Real Madrid-Manchester United match, we'll see what he brings. After watching U.S. networks screw w/ broadcasts for decades, my hopes aren't high.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think it's worth a shot.

At least it isn't fucking Thom Brennaman.

After watching ESPN circle the target area on the pitch for delivery from a cross and wax poetic about some MLS scrub's left foot, I'm ready for some new ideas when it comes to commentary.

That Twellman thing (telestrator) was for a U.S. game (friendly). You can tell when ESPiN cares about a match/tournament when they take the Bottom Line off the bottom of the screen.

For the World Cup and the Women's World Cup, seemed like ESPN changed starting with 2010 and they've won awards for their coverage. Can't really compliment 2008 because they had people calling games from Connecticut.

I just have bad memories of Dave O'Brien saying Oliver Kahn won the Golden Boot.

Trying to picture Gus Johnsons voice over a UCL game & I'm just not seeing it. Granted, he is one of the more entertaining & animated commentators out there, he's more made for NCAA Basketball & Football games than this. If it's a back & forth high scoring game, then yes, he would be ideal, but the knockout stages aren't known for these type of games, nor the World Cup for that matter, so that could spell disaster.

Interesting move by Fox to say the least & I'm intrigued to see how it goes, just not getting any hopes up. There's just something about not hearing English commentary over this sport that bothers me. It's probably just the poor choice of numerous non-English commentators that have been shoved down my throat time & again that has made me feel this way.

Everybody knows Gus Johnson for how animated he gets when there's exciting, back-and-forth action. He has called plenty of games that weren't like that though. Think about how he is in those situations. Unlike other commentators, he isn't switched on all the time and when the situation calls for it, he can blend into the flow of a basketball or football game. That's what gives me a little hope that this might not be a complete disaster.

Any thoughts on Curt Menefee handling all of the studio hosting duties for the World Cup

Since Sky doesn't have the rights in England, don't know why FOX doesn't just get some of those hosts on loan (just a few).

Wynalda for Lalas is basically an even trade.

So I just noticed that Bayern has let in 7 goals in 21 games. They have 15 clean sheets and have only conceded more than one goal once. They're also scoring more than Manchester United (2.6 GPG vs 2.4 GPG).

I don't even know how to explain that. People do worse playing FIFA 13 on 'pro'.
