Seeing as how all of the big European leagues are at the winter break, except of course, England, let's see where they currently stand.
La Liga
Currently through 17 of 38 games. Barcelona have a nine point lead over Atletico Madrid & a 13 point lead over Real Madrid in third. Don't know whats more embarrassing for Real Madrid, 13 points down to Barcelona, or seven points down to Atletico Madrid. Either way, I can't see Mourinho staying past this season & wouldn't be all that surprised to see him get the axe before the season ends if they were to suffer some more bad results. Barca's league to lose & at the rate they're playing, I can't see them losing there firm stranglehold. With Malaga sitting in fourth & getting a one-year European competition ban, it really opens that spot up for just about anybody to get a chance at the UCL in the qualifying round. There's currently 10 teams all within nine points of each other, so you're guess is as good as mine as to who could grab that spot. I'll take a guess & just say Valencia gets it, because it's Valencia & they always seem to find a way to make it into the UCL.
Bundesliga
Currently through 17 of 38 games. Bayern Munich have a comfortable nine point lead over Bayer Leverkusen & are looking quite good to regain the Bundesliga crown from Borussia Dortmund. To early to tell who will gain the UCL spots, but I would say that Borussia Dortmund will probably grab one even if they lose Lewandowski in January. Bayer Leverkusen are also in good shape to grab an automatic spot as well. The month layoff could make a big impact, but I can't see anything spectacular happening to see Bayern Munich lose there grip at the top. Schalke will probably do there thing & grab a spot or the qualifying spot like they usually do, but that's just a guess.
Serie A
Currently through 18 of 38 games. Not going to lie, but I haven't watched any Serie A this season due to FSC losing the TV rights. That being said, Juventus hold an eight point lead over Lazio at the top. 2nd place (Lazio) through 6th place (Roma) is only separated by four points & it's made up of the usual suspects (Fiorentina, Inter & Napoli). Good to see Fiorentina back in the mix after a three-season hiatus. Glad to see Inter competing once again after last seasons debacle, despite the fact I absolutely despise them. AC Milan are in 7th & no contender whatsoever after the summer departures of Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva & Antonio Cassano. Juventus will probably retain there Serie A crown as they're the strongest side in Italy & the other big two (Inter & AC Milan) are complete shadows of there former selves from years past. Lazio, Fiorentina, Napoli & Roma are traditionally competitive sides no doubt, but they never seriously contend with the big three in the end. I like the prospects of Lazio, Fiorentina, Inter, Napoli & Roma competing for the two UCL spots (One automatic & one qualifying) til the end as I can't see Juventus slipping up big enough to lose the title. Probably going to be the most competitive league in Europe in terms of number of teams fighting for the top spot & UCL spots when you consider how close all of the teams are in points currently.
Ligue 1
Currently through 19 of 38 games played. PSG are in a three-way tie for 1st place with Lyon & Marseille, but have the tiebreaker advantage on goal differential (+24). Seemingly looks like a three horse race with those clubs. Stade Rennes sit six points back of them & could make things interesting as well as the 5th through 9th place teams that are all within nine points of the top, but it would seem unlikely barring anything spectacular. PSG started the campaign off dreadfully, but have been on a rampage of late winning nine of there last 10 games in all competitions. I would say they're probably the favorites to take the crown given the quality of players in the squad & the fact they finally get Lucas Moura from Sao Paulo after the break in January after purchasing him this summer. Lyon & Marseille both have great shots at the title as well & have traditionally been strong contenders, but PSG have to much firepower & seem to finally be coming together as a team after a plethora of summer additions.
This is all of course just speculation & it's really just guesses with factoring how the season has gone thus far. January changes everything as the transfer market opens back up, but it remains to be seen who will the spenders & who will be the buyers.
