So much for my delusions of grandeur. I just got knocked out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy by League 1 side Leyton Orient. Not only that, but they beat me 3-1. I took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, and it all went downhill from there. I'll be lucky to make it to the 3rd round of the FA Cup...let alone win it and make it to Europa.
Delusions of grandeur have returned! I was able to make it past the first two rounds with only a little bit of trouble. I knew that I had to make some moves to go any further, so I decided to sell...a lot. I had already been knocked out of the League Cup and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, and I had around a 20 point lead in the league. So, in order to make a run at the FA Cup, I focused solely on getting some quality and sacrificing depth. The first day of the January transfer window, I signed a free agent goalie that is rated as 77 OVR, and I signed a speedy free agent striker. I also put in for a free transfer for Frankie Hejduk to shore up the right side of my back line. After that, I set my sights on helping out the defensive midfield by getting Maurice Edu. Edu was a better and cheaper option than many of the guys available, and he's young enough that he can improve and stay with the team all the way to the Premiere League. Edu was still going to cost at least 750k, and I only had a little over 100k in my transfer budget. Luckily, I had several stiffs and older players on one year contracts with value ranging from 50k to 200k. All-in-all I sold seven players and adjusted my transfer budget up in order to pay a final price of 875k for Edu. That was still cheaper than some of the other guys that I was looking at.
I played Sheffield Wednesday in the third round, and beat them 3-0. Then I played Sunderland and beat them 1-0. Next was Newcastle Utd, where I scored an 89th minute equalizer in a home game. The replay was two days later, in the snow, at St. James' Park. I crushed them 5-0. I don't know if it was because of the snow, fatigue, or both, but I made several changed in my midfield, and changed my striker, and I simply blew right by them in the replay. Next up was Stoke City, who I beat 1-0. I got Fulham in the semi-final, and beat them 4-1 in a near empty New Wembley Stadium. Apparently, League 2 Cheltenham Town isn't much of a draw.
Now, I have to beat Manchester United in the final, in the hopes of making Europa next season as a newly promoted League 1 side. Luckily, I have/had a 30 point lead in the league, and I've been able to add a couple of youth academy players to the squad to let my best players have plenty of rest. My success in the FA Cup has also bumped a transfer budget, that started out at 250k, to nearly 2 million. Winning the league should bump that up even further. If I can beat Man Utd., and make Europa, and if I get a lot more money for transfers, then I'll definitely have to move from semi-pro to pro next season, and try to make a run in four cup competitions, as well as, at least, trying to stay in League 1, and hopefully get promoted to the Championship.
