Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

Why not rush just three guys and protect from the eventual nickel and diming to death in the final 2 minutes??? Was it not brazenly clear enough that Texas had a weak running game with NEGATIVE 9 yards in the first half??? omg................... Is it now tradition to run the defensive play over and over that the opponant has the highest percentage of success against?
Clearly you haven't watched much of Colt McCoy carving up 7-8 defenders like clockwork.
I mean on our last possession, Texas managed to sack Boeckman with a three man rush!!!! My Blood pressure spiked when I started to count our offensive lineman and reached 5 let alone 6 on that play.......
And that's completely irrelevant to this discussion.

Texas has a fierce pass rush, Ohio State does not. If OSU could get to the QB with 3-4, they would do so. They cannot (at least not most of the time), so they choose to blitz.
Please bring back Mark Dantonio.
Are Will Smith, Darrion Scott & Kenny Peterson coming back too? THAT's the difference here.

With the two timeouts UT was in the drivers seat. Colt could run or pass. He also could just throw it away. tOSU needed to make a play ..we didn't Colt and the wideout did. Ball game over! I don't think it really mattered what D we were in. With the timeouts and the fact our D line was worn down.. it came down to execution..again! We played hard to the final whistle..it wasn't so much a breakdown..just the D couldn't come up with a game changer..

This is an easy debate for both of you given the retrospective aspect of this...but if Freeman drops into his zone in time, we are looking at a breakup if not a pick. If Russell takes the upfield shoulder and gets his head across, we are looking at a timeout and multiple shots in the endzone. Man was working better than the zone all night...it was a gamble and we lost.

My point is that we ask JT to gamble...when he does, we complain. Damned if you do...

Yeah, I agree with this. All I know is that the Texas offense we faced last night was an incredible offense, and our defense held them in check for a large portion of the game. Texas got yards in huge chucks but didn't put up a ton of points...I think 24 points was a strong performance by this defense. And then to think that Texas had to struggle with numerous 4th downs and a fake punt to make it all happen. That's not to take anything away from Texas, since you're given 4 downs to do it, but hell, they had to scrap like never before for those 24 points. I thought our defense showed well.

My only wish is that we somehow wouldn't have broken off the scoring run with 2:00 left. I really wished that somehow that drive would have lasted longer. Oh well. :(

Over and over? Do you understand football? Do you know what you saw last night? Obviously not since you ignore the multiple coverages employed all night and the disguising stems and rolls that even ended up hurting us in the no-huddle and with a late drop at a crucial time.

I guess McCoy taking the most shots he's eaten all year means nothing? McCoy took a pounding all night.

Highlights vs OU:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgrpZDx67CE"]YouTube - QB Colt McCoy Highlights Texas vs OU 10/11/08[/ame]

1st play - 7 men in coverage, intermediate pass over the middle. 15 yard gain.
2nd play - 7 men in coverage, gorgeous pass down the sideline with a DB draped over the WR. 25 yard gain.
3rd play - 7 men in coverage, pass underneath. 14 yard gain.
4th play - 6 men in coverage, pass outside, 13 yard gain.
5th play - 7/8 men in cov'ge, pass underneath, 17 yard gain.
6th play - blitz, gorgeous pass down the sideline, 35 yard gain.
7th play - 7 men in coverage, pass over middle, TD texas.
8th play - 7 men in coverage, cuts it back and runs, 15 yard run.
9th play - 6 men in coverage, pass over the middle, long TD.
10th play - 8 men in coverage, dumpoff pass for 10 yards and first down.

They gambled all night and covered those matchups remarkably well, and hit McCoy as hard and often as Vince and Dorsey. It's a tough way to finish, but they aren't in that game without those gambles.

You clearly have little understanding of football.

Yeah, I'm sure he'll just go ahead and quit a good head coaching job to go back to being an assistant. Maybe he can find some more eligibility for Will Smith, Darrion Scott, Tim Anderson, Kenny Peterson and Mike Doss. :roll1:

As has been posted already:
" ... Texas fans have been some of the classiest we have had here. You have a great fan base, a classy coach and a great program."
" ... Congratulations, UT. You continue to have my respect.. as fans... as an institution... and as a program."
" ... Mack is classy. Texas is a top shelf program. they have great kids, great coaches, very good people, a great school."

Having said that: I'm laboring hard to forget the uncalled PI (TB to Robo - 1st. possession), the UR call on Thad (giving UT their 1st. TD), and the Line Judge re-spotting the ball for the Linesman on the 4th. & 3 play.

Eddie George repeated on the post-game, "It's a game of inches."

John Greenleaf Whittier wrote, "For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'"

W. W. Hayes told me, "Don't say a whole lot when we lose & say even less when we win."

Great analysis and breakdown as usual from CFN

Blows up all theories of lesser speed, line play, etc...just praises a great game between two even foes.
The yang to this ying is the absolute trash piece by self-professed USC homer Arash Markazi. If I saw him I'd punch him in the face. His "article" is the biggest pile of pathetic trash I've ever read. It's a fan boys blog post mascurading as journalism. An entire section in the middle should be a separate "article". Even the editor missed a sentence with a missing "a". Somehow he's decided that the game last night couldn't have ended any other way and it's a continued indictment against the program, the conference, etc etc.

How he has a job I'll never understand. Here's a link, but I'm warning you...it will [censored] you off:

Powerful stuff right here! Guys (on both sides) who can keep life in perspective. I'm going to miss this group of seniors. I just wish so much they could've ended it with a great victory.

Thanks for the post Baney. Great representatives of The Ohio State University!

Yeah, I was hoping that the game last night might get the bucks at least a little respect, that they can play with anyone and compete, but after listening to the radio today, it's been made out to be worse than the last 2 years.

Seriously, I fucking hate sports radio/tv/blogs/etc...

Fuck ESPN, Fox Sports, SI, and every other major media outlet.

I saw on ESPN Kirk and Corso were talking about the 2009 Texas/tOSU squads, and I think we did get some cred back because they were saying we should be 1/2 at the start of next year. But also, that's the ESPN guys talking....
