Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

Yeah, I was hoping that the game last night might get the bucks at least a little respect, that they can play with anyone and compete, but after listening to the radio today, it's been made out to be worse than the last 2 years.

Seriously, I fucking hate sports radio/tv/blogs/etc...

Fuck ESPN, Fox Sports, SI, and every other major media outlet.
It just goes to show you that people will forever take any outcome and bend any facts to fit whatever sad misguided theory they stubbornly hold onto, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

Fuck the haters!

GO BUCKS!

Not so sure about 1/2 next year, there's going to be several great teams.

Texas, USC, UF (if they get Tebow back) tOSU, Oregon, Bama, Penn State.

I'm sure the top 10 will be an interesting thing come pre-season. Most likely USC or UF (again, depending on the BCS game and Tebow's return) will be 1/2.

I can see us near a 5-8 range though.

I think saying tOSU is a top-5 team to start next year is a little crazy. There's gonna be a lot of holes to fill. You don't lose a RB the calibre of Beanie and Senior leaders like JL and MJ on defense and improve that much. I know we tend to reload vice rebuild, but we're losing three "All-Timers" right there.

I think Boom will make the transition a little eaier. Add in Hyde, Berry and hopefully a healthy Zoom and that's a good stable of backs. Posey may step in and be better than Robo, but you can't replace the experience/leadership he provided. I'm sure somebody like Sabino or Spitler will step in and do an admirable job of replacing Freeman and JL, but there's sure to be a dropoff there. You cannot expect to come close to replacing a shutdown corner like MJ. You saw the respect he garners last night when the 'horns flat-out avoided him. Hopefully Chimdi uses last night as motivation to step up his game and DWash, a healthy Amos and some of the youngsters can help at least minimize that loss. Hopefully Coleman and Russell both come back because they are both very good safeties.

The two areas I expect BIG improvement from are along the lines. There will be a major talent upgrade on the OL, and if they stay healthy, they should be better than this years group with ease. Along the DL, Gibson and Williams are gonna be beasts off the edge, and Denlinger, Heyward, Rose, Goebel et al will make for a very strong rotation.

Thank god, and that's a no brainer. This year's oline didn't play with any kind of fire or intensity IMO. They looked flat in every game. Now they did step up last night, but it would have been nice to see that earlier in the year. Hopefully the oline can get Pryor some more time next year.

And I've said since the beginning of the year that, Williams is going to be a monster in his remaining years here. He's fast, and he's very very strong. Can't wait to see more of this kid. Gibson on the other end will also be amazing, but I'm looking for the middle of our d line to step up. We need some more push from the middle.

In this years OL's defense, a slew of injuries prevented them from developing any kind of chemistry. They had multiple players playing out of position at times and a true frosh starting at center (though to his credit Brew did a great job). The simple talent upgrade next season though should be noticeable IMO if they can stay healthy.

Agree. Just hope Nathan can keep his nose clean because I see a ton of potential in him. He reminds me a lot of Kudla.

I think we should certainly be positioned in the top 5 next year and here's why.

First Defensively

First off Both offensive and defensive lines as you said should be better. The pressure off the edges from Williams/Gibson should be one of the better we've had in a while. The DT's should be insanely deep as well which in turn will allow the young LB's to transition in nicely.

Second, Sabino is a tremendous talent (5 star) and has shown to be a bigger hitter on special teams. You add him with Homan (who really played well this year) as well a trio of Moeller, Sweat, Rolle/Bell will do a great job as well.

Another reason is the DB's while we lose the best corner in the nation should also be very talented. We'll have Donald Washington as well as Chikwa as corners with tons of experience, and we'll have one of the best saftey groups in the nation with Coleman/Russel. Also at nickle is Hines who IMO is going to be the most talented DB we have next year, and passing on our bucks could be a hard task

Over all we don't lose that much one defense. We'll get Wilson back (again) on the D-line and with a very strong Dline/secondary we should be extremely hard to move the ball against. Only question is obviously can our Lb's step in and make an impact, but with the way our LB's in the past have filled in we shouldn't have troubles.

On Offense

First, The offensive line. While we lose three starters we, IMO, will be much much better. You'll have three 5 star talents on the line in Shuggarts, Brewster, and Adams who are just Nasty! Then you will have Boren as a lock at one gaurd who I hear is very impressive, and Cordle/Browning at another gaurd spot.

Second, the QB play. Terrelle Pryor with spring ball and fall practice under his belt is going to make him that much better. With a more talented offensive line he'll also have a better shot with his already freak talent. Improved Knowledge of the game, and more work on his passing abilities is going to take him to that next level.

Running backs-Sure we'll most likely lose Beanie but we do reload rather nicely. As stated on here I'm not so sure Beanie/Pryor in the same backfield as ever that great of a set. Pryor thrives in shotgun and Beanie thrived in the Iformation so perhaps it will make the offense even more diverse having a back like Herron who seemed to do well no matter what the formation? I personally also feel like Hyde from florida will have a HUGE impact (think beanie 06), and you add Berry who is electric as well so things aren't as bleak as you think.

Recievers- We lose Robo, but we are going to be STACKED at the WR position. IF hartline returns great, but if not then we'll have tons of talent either way. Posey, Sanzo, Thomas, Stoney, Washington, and Small is a great set of WR's. With the incoming Freshman class maybe including Marlon Brown we should be very talented.

Overall Pryor should have more time to throw, and a better grasp of the game which in itself can make our offense better overall than this years squad. The new talent stepping in IMO is just sadly to say more explosive than this years version (Thomas, Stoney, Berry).

I certainly think we should be right up there with the best. Texas, USC, Florida, and Bama are going to be AMAZING. However, PSU not so much IMO with the loss of those three recievers. IN order I think it would go something like this

1. Florida
2. Texas
3. USC
4. OSU
5 Bama

It'll come down to USC/OSU in that second week again to determine who's season is going to be great IMO I dunno if we can do it but we should atleast have the horses now to compete greatly with USC. Quick worry, That USC offensive line does worry me, but hopefully a better Defensive line helps erase that.

Aside from our new gelled LB/CB corps, our Dline should be vastly improved.

That alone will make life a ton easier on those guys, especially if Russell and Coleman decide to return, that too should make it a fine defense.

Offense - will be just fine. Beanie might be one of the best, but we have other's willing to try.

Maybe not a top 5, top 10 definetly.

No doubt that the defensive line should improve just about everything our defense does next year. The pass rush means we wont have to blitz as much, and more pressure= more turnovers. Coleman/Russel will certainly be back and because of that overall our secondary will be better than this years. I think we'll be improved on the Defensive Line, Offensive Line, Quarterback, Reciever, and Secondary. Weaker at Linebacker, and Runningback.

If we're gonna put Texas in the top 5 then this team deserves to be in the top 5 as well.

Mods: Any chance at breaking off the past few posts into a "2009 Season" thread? It's never too early.
Got that right! haha I'm ready already! Damn this'll be a long offseason I suppose then....

Much as I hate to say it, I'm not sure I agree with your conclusion. Sadly, if anything, the recent body of evidence does not exactly bolster the Buckeyes reputation nationally. As the rest of the country sees it, Ohio State can beat up on the Big Ten, but when we play anybody who is any good, we lose, and usually in spectacular fashion. Last night certainly demonstrated grit and determination not seen in the past three national appearances, but I hope that Buckeye Nation has not reached the point where we are content with a loss, albeit a close one to a formidable opponent. (recall E Gordon Gee's remarks on the 1992 13-13 tie vs Michigan). Regretably, the body of work of the Buckeyes as of late demonstrates a dominance of a conference of questionable strength (at least recently) and falling short when faced with stiffer competition on the national stage. Until we can post some quality wins, this perception by a fickle media, fair or unfair will prevail.

ok, I realize last night's loss was a tough pill to swallow.

But seriously, y'all D played lights out from what I saw.
McCoy's numbers looked a lot better than he did.
He threw a pick in the red zone, fumbled (and was lucky as hell it went out of bounds), had another ball begging to be picked right before that 4th down conversion on the last drive. Not to even mention that one TD drive that was assissted by some rather questionable calls in the 3rd quarter.

He looked rattled and constantly seemed on the brink of making a huge mistake to cost his team the game. He hasn't looked like that in any other game I've seen him play.

Once JT let the offense loose, UT couldn't stop y'all.

Y'all were right on the brink of beating a team the media has been blowing all season, from a conference that has also taken over the media darling role.
Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of at all. Y'all will be back in the mix next year once again.

P.S. believe me, it's better than going 7-5 after climbing as high as #2 in the polls this year

With TP behind center that makes this team an automatic top 6 or 7 type squad. If the defensive line comes on (as I am anticipating them to do), they could easily become the focal point of that defense next season. If that's the case, a BCS game will be a good bet. We have the talent elsewhere. Where we have lacked is along the front four. They really turned it on late in the season, last night they had a hell of a game. I am expecting big things in 2009.

Not sure about this statement. Nobody game a damn who Texas was until the OU game...and that was because we forced them too. Even after the OU game some of the talking heads were still reluctant to acknowledge us. When asked if we should be ranked number one that night Mark May kept dodging the question. Most people had us 4th or 5th best in the Big 12 this year.
