Field conditions at Ohio Stadium

First and foremost is how the field performed. Didn't see nearly the number of slips and falls as last year. Looked like a pretty fast track.

Anybody see NoD's field yesterday? Looked like OSU's last year, except it looked to be about twice as long. Almost as if the NoD groundskeeper knew that NoD has no speed, and so tried to equalize with the shitty surface.

In my opinion, a crappy grass track is 10x worse than a new artifical surface.

I was at the game with a friend who had never been to the game. his comment in the 1st quarter "Steubenville Big Red's Field looks better than this field." I could not argure. IT WAS SAD...

it takes a little while for the rubber pellets to really settle in and make it all look the same/better/equal/etc...

The paint in the endzone was very, almost, faded. But the more and more I was watching games, I was looking at their endzones. Teams like Wisconsin have the same surface as far as I know and their endzones looked exactly the same as Ohio State's. Does anyone know how long Wisconsin has had that playing surface in?

I think since '03.

There are different grades and quality levels of carpet used. I'd be very interested to know exactly which one the Buckeyes used. I'm aware it's fieldturf, but there are different grades of that brand too.

Exactly.

They replace the field twice last year at great expense trying to get it right. There is no question that they went with the top grade that was appropriate for what they wanted.

As for the end zones looking faded on the tube, that surprises me. In person they just about blind you.

I'd have to agree...it didnt look too good on the tube. Hopefully it gets better with time.
I would not base that off of sat's game. The BTN camera quality was noticeably sub-par on saturday, very harsh shadows (harder to see faces), overall lower quality picture than we're used to seeing.

The EZ's look vibrant on photo day w/ the local news cameras.

For an example of what I mean... notice the difference between these two pics. The difference reminded me of the BTN cameras vs ESPN cameras.

Yeah, I was also struck by how day-glo the endzones looked.

The turf is nice...It was a very soft surface, even compared to some grass fields. The little rubber pellets get all over you, though. :)

They weren't talking about the color but certain spots were rather faded and I was at the game and it had shades of black in certain areas. I'll try to hook you up with an image.

The field looked much better today. :osu:
I thought so too. The scarlet end zones looked much more even and weren't splotchy like last week. However, I think a lot of the field conditions last week were a result of the alumni band trampling the field during the pre-game.

I sat close to the end zone yesterday, say 20-30 yard line, the field looked perfect to me. The end zones are a very bright and vibrant red, they spent a lot of money on the field and it shows. Unfortunately I just took some crappy cell phone pics so it would be worthless to post.
