Field conditions at Ohio Stadium

Is this the turf farm right off I-75 next to that Church with the HUGE Jesus in the Pond?

Nothing like "Touchdown Jesus" ... just yesterday, I was driving up I-75 and let out a chuckle, like I do each time I pass it....

That is not the farm they are referring to though.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State is poised to replace the turf in Ohio Stadium for the second time in just over a month...

"It?s all about the team; we?ve got the No. 1 team in the country and it deserves to play on the best surface we can provide," OSU assistant athletic director for facilities management Don Patko said last night.

OSU athletic director Gene Smith and the school?s "turf committee" were seen inspecting the field soon after the game and apparently made the decision then to have it replaced.

Wow! Kudos to Gene Smith, the "turf committee", and all involved to get this done. How many other schools (even those with the 'means' to do something about it) would have simply chalked this situation up to 'bad luck' and an 'Act of God', and looked to next year to take any further steps (and who could have blamed them, really).

And I did kind of cringe at the thought of friends of mine (supporters of 'other' schools) and the comments that would have been made regarding the field for the biggest game this season and in several years.

But the powers that be came through with flying colors so that the Buckeye faithful can point to yet another instance of what separates tOSU from the rest...

Proud to be a Buckeye...Our Team, Our Facilities, Our Leadership...Unparralleled! :osu:

Ohio State to replace stadium turf for second time this season

10/30/2006, 8:08 a.m. PT

The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? For the second time in five weeks, Ohio State will tear out the grass at Ohio Stadium and replace it.

Workers began taking out the old field on Monday and will begin replacing it with sod from a Columbus-area nursery on Wednesday.

There is only one home game remaining, but it's the biggest one of the year ? the top-ranked Buckeyes playing No. 2 Michigan on Nov. 18.

The turf was replaced for about $100,000 after the home game with Penn State on Sept. 24. Since then, the Buckeyes have hosted three games on it.

During Saturday's 44-0 victory over Minnesota, the field looked tattered around the edges and brown in the end zone. Several players appeared to slip down or slide on the turf. Large chunks of turf were kicked up whenever there was a tackle.

"If they have a weakness, it's a lousy field," Minnesota coach Glen Mason said after the game, adding that he was joking. He later returned to the subject, however.

"They just replaced the field, right?" Mason said. "They need a new gardener."

I also commend the decison to fix the problem in this two week hiatus. Not every program would spend the bucks twice within a month or so to fix an obvious problem of this type.

I suspect some of the motivation is the dawning realization that the game on the 18th is emerging as the game of a decade or five, with a huge national spotlight, and the desire that the field not be a deciding factor in the outcome. Many schools would just suffer through it and then address the problem in the spring and summer. That we are going to do the latter in depth is no doubt a good long term solution as well.

Go Bucks!

I would disagree with the notion that this hurts us because being used to the bad field was an advantage or that the admin did this to keep the field from being a factor.

A good field is a factor and a factor thats hugely in our favor. Our team is the racehorse, scUM is the mudder. Why give them a muddy track if you can avoid it?

Kudos to the OSU admin. I said earlier I would be dissapointed if they didn't do something about that field. As has been the case 99% of the time under JT, our Buckeyes did not dissapoint.

I agree OSU stands more to lose with poor footing.

BTW, wonder if the athletic dept. had a big time donor come in a decide to foot the bill?
Honestly, if this new turf helps OSU win the game, it may pay dividends in the tens of millions (assuming we also win in Glendale).
