OSU football recruiting: Experts' rankings don't faze Boren
Linebacker looking to exceed expectations
Tuesday, February 3, 2009

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Every day at 5 a.m. -- a brutal hour for almost anyone, let alone a teenager -- Zach Boren would arrive at Pickerington Central High School, ready for work.

He would hit the weights, then sit down with defensive coordinator Jeff Lomonico for film study.

Pumping iron and studying, all before 7?

"That's fun for me," Boren said. "It helps you on Friday nights."

It helped him earn a scholarship to Ohio State, where the freshman linebacker already is enrolled.

I know this has been beaten up a ton already, but the turnaround with this family is just awesome.

...and I like the fact that this grinder will go to war with us for 4 yrs.
Was just thinking the same thing...

this is the little brother that cried when big brother Justin (now a Buckeye) even considered Ohio State during the recruiting process.

Wow.

Funny I just clicked into this thread, after reading the latest article in Duron Carter's thread. There was nothing I could post in that thread to respond to how Duron was born looking at the 'Shoe, grew up a scUM fan, and then came around when it mattered most.. truly ironic, and absolutely awesome.

The list is growing extremely long of players that have seen the light. Justin, Zack, and even Mike Boren are the latest in a long line of the bad-guys-gone-good, with Justin leading the way. Must have been hard for Mike, at first, to even consider taking down the memorabilia, not wearing the shirts, hats, coats...etc.. But ask that guy tomorrow where his allegiance lies, and there is no question..

:osu:

It is becoming obvious to almost everyone.

Boren Talks About Typical Day At OSU

Pickerington Central graduate Zach Boren was back at his high school Wednesday for national signing day.
Boren was one of four OSU 2009 signees who enrolled early for winter quarter. He suffered a knee injury in his final high school game and has been busy with his rehab work.
He talked about what his days are like now that he is enrolled at Ohio State. It is a challenging schedule to keep up with and it's clear he isn't in high school any more.

"It's crazy," Boren said. "I'll tell you about Monday. I woke up at 5 o'clock. I got into the Woody (Hayes Athletic Center) about 5:45 a.m. I worked out from 6 to 8 a.m. I had rehab from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
"I went back and had a little breakfast. Then I had class from 10:30 till noon. I had class from 12:30 to 2:18 p.m. Then I had class from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Then I went back to the Woody and did a little more rehab.
"Then I had a tutor session from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and then had training table after that.
"Today, I am here for this ceremony, but I have to go back and have three classes today and the press conference there at 4 p.m. I've got a lot of stuff going on."
Boren talked about the commitment it takes to be a college football player.
"It is serious," Boren said. "(His brother) Justin used to always say that when you get to college it's more of a job than anything. It's your job to succeed and make sure you're doing everything right. You have to do it right or you won't make it. You'll get fired."

Boren Talks About Typical Day At OSU

It is obviously too early to tell, but Zach sure fits the mold of someone who is underrated. There have been a lot of players deemed too short, too slow or too something by the so called experts over the years who have not only played but excelled not only at the collegiate level but in the pro's. A combination of desire, work ethic and toughness and a flat out will to get it done has overcome a lot more than what Zach has to overcome to be a standout at tOSU, glad to have the young man in S&G.

The Boren family has added a new, intricate chapter to the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan.

Mike Boren attended high school in Columbus, but enrolled at the school up north, where he played linebacker from 1980-83. His wife, Hope, is also a Michigan alumna.

Their oldest son, Justin, followed suit and accepted a scholarship to play for the Wolverines. After Rich Rodriguez replaced Lloyd Carr as coach, Justin chose to transfer allegiances to the Scarlet and Gray.

Now, linebacker recruit Zach Boren has joined his brother as a Buckeye, resulting in a transformation of loyalty among the entire family.

"Everyone in the whole family is an Ohio State fan now," Zach said. "No one cares about Michigan at all anymore. That was in the past and we're all looking forward to being Buckeyes and staying Buckeyes for the rest of our lives."

Mike said he has generally received support from fellow Michigan alumni and former teammates, despite his newfound Ohio State fanship.

"I've gotten many phone calls backing me up or saying they would be doing the same thing if it were their kids in the same situation," he said. "As long as my kids are at Ohio State, I will be a Buckeye fan, and I may be even afterwards too."

His brother's relocation to Ohio State assured Zach that he wanted to become a Buckeye.

"Even if Justin stayed at Michigan, I was still looking at Ohio State," he said. "Justin didn't have everything to do with it. But when he transferred here, I knew for sure that this was the place."

Family's values don't include Michigan
By KRISTA JAHNKE ? FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER ? February 17, 2009

There's nothing like stoking the Michigan-Ohio State football rivalry in the dead of winter.

That's what The Lantern, the OSU student newspaper, did today, as it threw another log onto the simmering interstate fire with a story profiling Zach Boren, brother of Justin Boren, the former Wolverine who transfered to Ohio State last year.

To refresh your memory, the Boren boys are the kids of two Michigan graduates. Their father, Mike Boren, played linebacker for the Wolverines in the early 1980s.

Justin Boren left Michigan after Rich Rodriguez was hired, rankling Wolverine fans by saying he wanted out because of the program's erosion of family values.

Now, his little brother, Zach, is headed to OSU, as well, and he makes sure to get a quick jab in at the Wolverine's expense as he explains his decision.

From the Lantern: "Now, linebacker recruit Zach Boren has joined his brother as a Buckeye, resulting in a transformation of loyalty among the entire family.

"Everyone in the whole family is an Ohio State fan now," Zach said. "No one cares about Michigan at all anymore. That was in the past and we're all looking forward to being Buckeyes and staying Buckeyes for the rest of our lives."

The father goes on to say he'll be rooting for OSU, at least for the time being -- and possibly forever.

I think that's probably a smart decision, actually. I'm betting that the Wolverine fans wouldn't take the Borens back at this point.
