FB/LB Zach Boren (Official Thread)

All of this assumes there are actually plays in the playbook where the QB hands the ball to the FB. I think Brandon Joe took that playbook with him when he graduated.

More like Brandon Joe took all of the fullback talent with him when he graduated. It's nice that we have actual athletes at fullback again instead of converted tight ends.

OSU notebook: Younger brothers in fullback mix

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Jim Tressel recently was asked to name a player who has risen in the first two weeks of preseason camp from oblivion to possibly earning playing time. The only thing familiar about the Ohio State coach's answer was the last name.

"It's not in an extremely exciting role, but I thought Zach Boren really showed us -- he went from not having played at all and being listed on the depth chart as a linebacker, to showing in that scrimmage (Saturday) he can be a real good contributor at fullback," Tressel said. "And I wouldn't have known that this summer."

Boren is a freshman, and the younger brother of Michigan transfer Justin Boren, the left guard on the No. 1 offensive line. Zach Boren, from Pickerington Central, enrolled in time for spring drills, but he spent the time recovering from a knee injury.

The switch to fullback was made before preseason camp. Also vying for time is freshman Adam Homan, younger brother of junior linebacker Ross Homan. Adam Homan was praised by Tressel during spring drills when he showed tenacity for lead blocking.

The "younger brothers" are competing with James Georgiades for the No. 1 spot. Their rise was enough to enable the coach to upgrade fullback Jermil Martin into the power back position this month.
