FB/LB Zach Boren (Official Thread)

Boren Bashers? | Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Recruiting, OSU Big Ten Football, OSU Basketball – Bucknuts.com

When the Buckeyes offered a scholarship to Zach Boren and he subsequently committed to Ohio State, some OSU fans questioned Jim Tressel and his staff.

There was talk that the reason Zach had been offered by the Bucks and then his commitment accepted was to make sure brother Justin transferred to Ohio State. Some wondered why OSU would offer a player that had mostly MAC offers.

The answer was on display today in State College. Zach Boren not only played well today, but the Penn State player he laid out in route to catching a big pass could testify that Boren is absolutely a Big Ten football player.

After National Signing Day I was often asked which of the just signed players might be able to contribute as true freshmen. One of the names I mentioned was Zach Boren. I felt with the Buckeyes potentially in need of a fullback this season, he had a chance to be in the mix for playing time.

Not only has Zach Boren been in the mix, he has played a key role.

We needed some real physical people on this team(specifically the offense IMO) and the Boren Brothers have provided that. I'd like to see us get back to a somewhat tradition B10 style by winning with physical and mental toughness. Just line up and smack the opponent in the mouth for 60minutes.

Zach Boren, Ohio State fullback

When the Buckeyes went to a shotgun look against Illinois in the first game of the Big Ten season and used senior tight end Jake Ballard as the lead blocker for its rushing plays, the run game received a needed jolt. Now, nearing the end of the Big Ten season, the Buckeyes are back to a more balanced mix of run and pass, and the improvement of this freshman fullback is one of the major reasons for that success.

Early on, you could see what happened when Boren missed a linebacker as the lead blocker. Now he's making those blocks more often than not, and that allowed the Buckeyes to grind down Penn State with their run game last week. I expect more of the same today.

"I thought Zach did a very solid job," OSU coach Jim Tressel said. "He catches the ball well, blocks well, and learns things well, and fullback is a position that you have to do all the pass protection things both at fullback and at tailback. You have to know everything that the guys up front are doing so you know where you fit in, and he's done a good job of picking all that up."

Next week will be his brother Justin's week, when Ohio State's left guard goes against Michigan, the school he left to transfer to Ohio State. But with the Rose Bowl on the line, this is the Boren to follow today. With Terrelle Pryor still nursing a left ankle injury, the Buckeyes should be under center with the fullback in the game a lot of the time, content to pound it some more and let their defense control the Iowa offense. Boren also caught two passes last week, including one that converted a third down, so he could always slip out into the flat for an important pass or two.
