Central's power of 3 headed to Big Ten

Ball carriers key factor in Tigers' chance to play in regional final

By JOE ARNOLD ? Sports Writer ? November 14, 2008

GAHANNA - The message was as loud and clear as it was effective.
Trailing at halftime for the first time all season this past weekend, Pickerington Central lined up their three best playmakers in the backfield on the opening drive of the second half and dared Upper Arlington to stop them.
Zach Boren, Jamie Wood and Patrick White each carried the ball on the decisive scoring drive in the Saturday regional semifinal game. And each has been equally instrumental in leading the Tigers to a 12-0 record and a berth in Saturday's regional championship.
"They've got some kids, and there's a reason why they're going places to play," Upper Arlington coach Mike Golden said after the game. " ... Those kids make plays, and there's a reason why they get recruited. They did a great job with that."
The diversity and sheer athleticism of what many believed to be one of the most talent-laden classes in Central Ohio was on full display in the Tigers' 24-16 win over the Golden Bears.
Wood, who is headed to Ohio State, finished with eight carries and 116 yards, and Boren, who also has committed to the Buckeyes, piled up 95 yards on 11 carries in the victory. The Michigan State-bound White chipped in 14 yards on the big second-half drive.
With three Division I college prospects from which to choose, life is good for Central coach Jay Sharrett.

Boren Injury Will Keep Him Out For Awhile - Bucknuts Forum (free)

Bill Kurelic said:
Zach Boren was tackled and injured his right knee a few minutes before the end of the 1st half on Saturday night against Cincinnati Elder. He went back in the game in the 2nd half and played a few series. However Boren saw an Ohio State trainer today and was told he has a torn MCL and possibly a torn ACL. He will see a doctor on Monday to find out whether or not the ACL is torn. If it is not torn his likely recovery time will be six to eight weeks. If the ACL is torn, Boren will have arthroscopic surgery and could be out four to six months. Boren's spirits are still high considering the injury and Pickerington Central's loss to Elder, and he is determined to be back in action as soon as possible.

I follow Elder closely and Boren was an extremely tough runner last night as Elder had a tough time tackling him at all. I was surprised that he did not have mmore carries before the injury. I believe he finished with 4 carries for around 30 yards or so. can't remember now.

Central had a very good team though. Hopefully Boren can recover well.

The pickerington coaches don't know how to get the ball to their playmakers enough...

High school football @ dispatch.com

Boren a keeper

Recruiting high school football players is an inexact science, and Ohio State has had its share of flameouts through the years. Does Rodelle Dupree, the must-have linebacker, ring a bell? After leaving Ohio State, he became a backup at Rowan, a Division III team. How about Buster Howe, a Mr. Football? He left the program in the dark of night. Ken-Yon Rambo had a great name, but not much game.

So there's no way to predict what will become of Zach Boren, a member of the Buckeyes Class of 2009. He played linebacker and fullback for Pickerington Central, and was one of the main men that got the team to the Division I state semifinals.

I say man because that's exactly what he is. Boren went down with a serious knee injury in the second quarter of a 24-10 loss to Cincinnati Elder on Saturday night. At the time, he was throwing blockers out of the way and tackling ball carriers as if they were rag dolls.

Surely, he wouldn't return. In the third quarter, though, there was Boren, throwing people around again, albeit with a heavily taped right knee and a noticeable limp.

Man...how lucky for the OSU program that they might actually get a decent player after giving a handout scholarship to Justin Boren's brother...:wink2:

[/sarcasm]

In all seriousness...I think the way Zach has performed this year should quiet any talk of him not deserving a scholarship....

OSU fans will be proud of this kid

Going back into a game with a torn MCL and a possible torn ACL tells me this kid has serious heart. The term "hard nosed football player" gets thrown around a lot but I think Zach Boren really earned that title doing what he did for his team. I hope it is just an MCL injury so he can compete in camp but if it is an ACL tear he can redshirt and still have four years left after he rehabs the knee.

Can't help it, Zack Boren, (and Adam Homan), is essentially a steal as a 3star candidate pickup for this '09 class, imo. My peoples, here ye, here ye, this guy is a bad ass dude!! No matter how you look at it, if nothing else, I believe he will be an absolute monster on those vital special teams!! But personally, I don't think he'll be limited to just that! Let us not forget, James Laurinaitis himself was only a 3star 5.5 rated prospect in '05 by Rivals. I see Carpenter-type potential here. I am particularly ecstatic about all our 'lower rated' 3Star verbals for this incoming class. Carter, a 3 star....you gotta be kiddin', right?

Ken-Yon Rambo had a great name, but not much game.
This has nothing to do with Zach Boren, and my apologies, but this comment just cannot go unchallenged. Ken-Yon was a fine receiver who never got the credit he deserved while at tOSU. His career continues in the Canadian Football League, where he has been the best receiver in the league for a number of years.

Granted, he was no Anthony Gonzales ...

Back to the subject - get well, Zach! Looking forward to seeing you in scarlet and gray.
