FB/LB Zach Boren (Official Thread)

Like this quote from the Dispatch article:

"If my brother was still at Michigan, the same thing would have happened today; I still would have picked Ohio State," Zach said. "I didn't see any reason to keep waiting when I knew Ohio State was where I wanted to spend the next four or five years of my life."

Agreed--Tressel and crew do not give any wasted offers. Everyone who gets one should feel pretty proud of themself--including Zach.

Zach should not feel as though being a fullback is a consolation prize, compared to LB. If Zach ends up as a 6'1" 275 lb. badarse fullback, he could even see time this fall. With all due respect, that scenario would be doubtful as an LB.

Even with the diminished role of FBs in college and pro offenses, if Zach worked to add muscle, yet increase speed and agility, he could make a pro team happy on Sundays some day. If he lives up to his reputed work ethic, he has a good shot...

Good luck--now kick some arse!!!
Prolly need to let him finish his senior year in high school first. :)

I think he could work in as a Linebacker. He tallied 182 tackles last season! That is nothing to sneeze at. He also is a very hard nosed hard hitting tackler. I love watching players who like to knock the slobber out when the hit!

Central's Boren decides to play under Tressel

PICKERINGTON - Ohio State fans officially can start contemplating what Zach Boren will look like in scarlet and gray.

The Pickerington Central junior decided he had mulled over the Buckeyes' scholarship offer for long enough. On Wednesday, Boren committed to play for Jim Tressel in 2009.

"I've known for a couple days now that Ohio State's where I want to go," Boren said Thursday. "I woke up (Wednesday) and just said 'Why is there reason to wait?' "

Boren said he called Ohio State's co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell to let the former Buckeye know he had decided to become one.
"He said that a couple years ago he would never have believed this," Boren said. "He was really happy."

It is also nothing to pay much attention to in high school. Tackle stats have no concrete criteria. I've seen staffs give a kid an assist for pile jumping or even being near a pile.

Lol...true that. We had a LB that supposedly had 120 tackles and I hardly remember him making a solo tackle. Out of Boren and Homan, I think Homan is the most likely to stay on D. I think Boren has hit his ceiling athletically and I think Adam still has room to grow there. Boren ends up at about 260-265 and at FB, unless he ends up at DT. I think both could easily end up at FB but just my opinion. Either way they are strong, tough players who wanted to be Buckeyes. Good enoguh for me.

I think Zach will get his shot at Linebacker First when he comes to OSU.
He isn't talked too the running back coach or the fullback coach or offense coaches
He has been in contact with Fickell and fickell likes this kid, that's all that matters, it does not matter much if we think he can play there. Fickell has told the kid he wants him at linebacker and linebacker is where the staff told the kid he will be at.
So he will get his shot there and if it does not work then we can place him where he lands.
But we can't just change his position he is translating too in college even after the staff tells him that they are done recruiting linebackers! And also when he and his family tells us that they are recruiting him for linebacker.

It is funny that people think they can change his position just because there is 3 studs who are better than him as of now at linebacker....

College football: One Boren isn't enough for OSU

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

<snip >

Taking it all in is their father, Mike. He played linebacker at Michigan for coach Bo Schembechler in the 1980s. He has taken flak from Wolverines boosters since Justin, who started 13 games last season as a sophomore at center or guard, left first-year Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez.
Cont...

As far as I'm concerned, we as Buckeye boosters should all step up (not that a lot already haven't) and welcome not just the boys but Mike & mom as well. If his fellow alumni and boosters are giving the guy crap because of this decision, then in many ways, I'm sure it does nothing but reinforce their piece of mind in making what was a very difficult FAMILY decision.

If giving a man 'flack' over this family decision isn't an indication (yet another) of how tsun believes that the world should and does revolve around them... then nothing is.

Welcome to all of the Boren family. I am very much looking forward to seeing your boys continue their path to manhood under JT. Best wishes to all of you!

BN$--Is Boren Going To Select A College Soon Or Later?

Zach plans to decide soon and says tOSU wants him to play LB and FB. Michigan was among a group of schools that still came by his school to visit him.

Just got my recruiting rag with Duane Long's latest rankings. Long generally misses a few by a good stretch, but this one takes the cake. He rates 106 players from the state of Ohio in order. Zach is not among 'em. (Not national - just Ohio.)

Then he lists "best of the rest" by position. They weren't alphabetical so I can only guess he did those in rank order as well. Zack was #15 among best of the rest RBs.

Not a knock on Zach - just a serious disappointment with Duane.

(He has Fellows as #1 in Ohio BTW.)

Zach looks huge in his new photo shoot with Bucknutz.

I agree, the OHIO HIGH rankings are nice to see but for some reason it seems as though Duane picks favorites and writes several others off without further consideration. Not speaking from personal bitterness or anything!

ESPN - Budmayr proves worth in Columbus - Insider

Zach Boren (6-1, 240), Linebacker/Fullback (Pickerington, Ohio/North)
Boren is what he is -- a tough, blue-collar, unflashy football player with good instincts and the ability to just get it done between the white lines. Those attributes combined with his marginal lateral mobility are why we project he may end up at fullback at OSU. Friday he also showed why linebacker is not out of the question.

Boren passed the eyeball test physically with his compact frame layered with good bulk and was equally impressive in drills we thought might exploit some weaknesses. More of a tackle-to-tackle, downhill run stopper, Boren showed grit and deceptive athleticism, jamming and running with some of the faster backs in one-on-one passing drills and breaking down well in open-field tackling stations. There were no Buckeyes coaches on hand to witness his camp MVP performance at linebacker, but it showed why he might not be limited to strictly fullback in college.
