It took 25 years for a private school to start at No. 1 in the Observer's Sweet 16 preseason high school football poll.

Today Charlotte Christian makes history with a team coach Jason Estep believes is better than last season's N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association champions.
It was Christian's first state title since 1992. The Knights enter the 2009 season as heavy favorites to repeat.
?We're more confident than last year,? said Estep, whose team returns 12 starters and has played in the past two state championship games. ?We think we're better. If we're developing our program the way we should be, middle school through varsity, we should be better every year.?

Jireh 'men' too big, fast for Christian
By Langston Wertz Jr.

Before his team's 7-0 loss to Monroe's Jireh Prep School on Friday night, Charlotte Christian coach Jason Estep looked at Jireh's roster - and he looked at Jireh's size - and thought his team might be in trouble.
. . .
Charlotte Christian's defense, led by three Division I linebackers prospects, is as good as advertised.
David Durham (Ohio State), Ty Linton (North Carolina) and Kelby Brown (Duke) are big and fast, and the Knights play the kind of attacking, aggressive defense that will be a real problem in the N.C. Independent Schools championship race.

There's a couple of reasons why David Durham and his Charlotte (N.C.) Christian School coach Jason Estep could be excused if they get caught rooting for Purdue today. Before transferring this season, Durham was a linebacker at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, which produced Purdue quarterback Drew Brees.
"He's pretty much a legend down there," said Durham, a senior.
And Estep, the young coach at Charlotte Christian, is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky, where Danny Hope was coach for five years before Purdue picked him this season to be the successor to Joe Tiller.
"Danny Hope is a good coach," Estep said.
But then Estep described his office at Charlotte Christian.
"It might be the only office in North Carolina that has panoramic pictures of the Horseshoe up on the wall, and all kinds of Ohio State stuff," said Estep, a native of Portsmouth, Ohio. "I get a lot of (Atlantic Coast Conference) traffic in here, obviously, and they're always asking, 'Coach, what are you doing?' I tell them, 'I'm from Ohio. That's where real football is at.'
"And my older brother, Michael Estep, played baseball at Ohio State and was all-Big Ten for three years. We're Buckeye fans, absolutely."
As for Durham, he's a future Buckeye. He committed to Ohio State last spring while still at Westlake, one of those huge Class 5A schools in Texas where football reigns supreme. For example, Westlake this year hired the coach from Odessa Permian, the school featured in the book Friday Night Lights.
But Durham was a Charlotte native, and when his father's job offered the opportunity for the family to move back for his senior season, they jumped at it.
"Obviously I love Texas and the football down there is great, but I had the opportunity to play with some of my best friends for my senior season," Durham said.
CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN 21, RALEIGH RAVENSCROFT 14: Jake Watson, filling in at quarterback for John Kincaid (flu) was 9-of-16 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns in a road victory. David Durham scored the winning touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter as Christian improved to 7-2.

The kid going to Ohio State, David Durham is special, he tweaked his back a bit during the game, but in general, those kids were special.”
