Identity missing....
  • After reading all of the teeth-gnashing about bandwagon this and sore vagina that after the Super Bowl, I thought that having a thread for members to list why they like certain teams would generate some discussion....just for fun....

    For instance:

Baseball: Baltimore Orioles. When I was a little kid my uncles and cousins in Detroit really tried to put the Tigers on me, but once we moved to Pennsylvania, it was all Orioles all the time. All of our TV stations were Hagerstown, MD channels and they didn't have an NFL franchise either.

NFL: Cleveland Browns: Really I only liked the Browns when they came back. Before that I wasn't really interested in the NFL. Makes you wonder what I was thinking, but what the hell....

NHL: Detroit Red Wings: This is the one and only Detroit team that stuck, but what really caused it was when I was 3 years old, Detroit drafted Yzerman. I couldn't pronounce his name and it stuck with me. Add to that all we got to see of hockey (seemingly) was Mario and the Penguins and I didn't like them even then. Detroit just stuck. Life has been really easy in that regard since about 1993 or so

NBA: I watched just about all Chicago Bulls games from 1988 to 1998, but I can't say they were really my favorite. I just liked watching Jordan play.

College football: Ohio State. In Pennsylvania I was stuck between Ntre Ame, Penn State and scUM fans with a few FSU fans thrown in for good measure. I didn't like any of them and since one of my friends was a big OSU fan and even though we couldn't see any of their games (this was around 1990), I became an Ohio State fan.

Other than OSU, I have always kind of liked Oklahoma and Texas. I think their rivalry is fun to watch and read about.

    Anyone else?

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals - it's been very hard to root for them lately cause of the ineptness of the organization...I was born in Dayton, so my dad was a bengals fan, I'm pretty sure when I was like 4 or 5, I was Boomer for Halloween (lulz)

MLB: Cincinnati Reds -basically same reason as Bengals, but I got to go a couple of Reds games when I was very young, grew up watching Barry Larkin, remember as a little kid he was up at bat, and I said "hit a HR Barry" (think of it in a little kid voice and its cute, ok) and he did

NHL: Columbus Blue Jackets- just cause it's in Columbus

NBA: None, don't like the NBA, if I had to pick it would be the Cavs tho

    College: Duh

    am I forgetting any others?

Penguins - Started watching hockey at an early age, and they were the closest team. So I went to a bunch of their games. Having Mario on the team didn't hurt. :p

Indians - Loved baseball as a kid, maybe as much as hockey. Went to tons of Indians and Reds games, but as I got older I kind of lost interest in the Reds. That didn't happen with the Indians.

49ers - Not really sure, to be honest. I was a huge Steve Young fan when I was a little kid, but I didn't really care much for football until the 2000s. I guess there was that leftover Steve Young love that remained when I started caring more about football. I also really like the Browns, but not quite as much as the Niners.

Cavs - Not a big fan of the NBA, but they're the team I root for. If I had to say why, it's because they're an Ohio team.

Buckeyes - Being in Ohio probably had something to do with this.

A little background info.. I'm the only person in my family who gives any kind of shit about sports, other than the Buckeyes. And even then, my family only gives a shit about the Buckeyes because I go there. I didn't have any family allegiances or anything.

My love for the Penguins is greater than any other sports team. It's hard to say greater than the Buckeyes since OSU isn't just a sports team to me, but it's probably equal if only referring to sports.

NCAA: The Buckeyes, who else? Grew up in an OSU household, and i'm the first to go to OSU. I made my dad especially proud.

NFL: The Browns, through the good and the bad, will always be a Brownie! Grew up watching them, and even though we are struggling right now, our time will come sometime.

MLB: The Tribe, heartbreak describes how I feel about the Tribe. The two world series in the 90's ('95 & '97) and the debacle against the Red Sox in '07. Grew up going to games, parents had season tickets early-mid 2000's, and favorite players of Kenny Lofton and Jim Thome. It's been a rollercoaster with the Tribe, but like the Brownies our time will come.

NBA: The Cavs, although this is my least favorite professional sport, I've had a blast following the Cavs while growing up. Mark Price was my favorite player watching every game hoping it would be the one he would finally dunk, but it never came. I'm not going to mention that bastard traitor.

NHL: The blue jackets, although a new(er) franchise, I've had a blast at games and watching hockey. Although they were not always my favorite team (used to be a big fan of the Stars, Avalanche, and Maple Leafs). Some of my favorite times with my dad was watching hockey on ESPN during the week, and my teams face his Habs.

Soccer: The Crew and Celtic (Scottish Premier League). Grew up playing soccer so naturally a big fan.

Ohio State Buckeyes- Born and bred. Grew up in NE Ohio in the 80's...Earle, Byers, Spielman, the helmets, the Shoe...had me from as early as I could remember.

Cleveland Indians- The Tribe was the first pro sports franchise I ever fell in love with. I remember being a kid and going to a nearly empty Municipal Stadium on Saturday afternoons to watch Andre Thornton, Julio Franco, Joe Carter, Cory Snyder, Brook Jacoby, Pat Tabler and Brett Butler play. Still, to this day, the one team aside from tOSU that has my unwavering support.

Cleveland Browns- This is where things get interesting. I grew up just a few miles NW of Y'town. My entire family (both sides) is rooted in Pittsburgh. Both parents grew up there and much of my extended family is still there. Every single one of them are diehard Pittsburgh fans. My old man's mood on fall Sundays depended on the outcome of the Steelers game. Well, in my rebellious youth I didn't want to follow my folks. My formative years as a sports fan were 1983-87. Right about that time is when things started getting good for the Browns and what better way to go against my folks than pick up the colors of their biggest rival? I was a huge Clay Matthews fan. Bernie Kosar, to this day, is one of my all time favorite athletes. I'm still a big Browns fan to this day, but not like before fucking Art Modell took the real Browns to Baltimore. I've never really connected with the reincarnation like I did the old Browns. Maybe it's the endless coaching carousel. Maybe it's the mind-boggling ineptitude. It's probably that they've never had that season that locked me in like 1986 did as a kid. I guess it still could happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

Cleveland Cavaliers- Ron Harper, Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, Larry Nance, "Hot Rod" Williams. Shitty Richfield Coliseum. That's when I fell in love with the Cavs. Followed them through the lean years in the late-90's until our false idol came along. He was sure to deliver a title. During his time in Cleveland, the nba began to take a turn for the worse, IMO. Competition, rivalries, competitiveness gave way to posturing, buddy networks, showboating, flopping and dumbfuckery. The nba sitting and watching the three buttfuckeers join up on one team in an obviously predetermined arrangement was the last straw. I still wish the Cavs well, but I'm done with the nba and haven't watched a minute of it this season.

Baltimore Orioles - Born in Washington D.C. and spent my summers in Hyattsville, MD after moving to Daytona Beach. I was around 11 when the Orioles got Cal Ripken Jr., who to this day, remains my favorite player of all time, in any sport. And yes, I believe Brady Anderson and Mickey Tettleton were juicers.

Washington Redskins - See above. It was simple, in my house growing up, you were a Redskins fan or you slept on the front porch.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Living in Florida through the 80's I had to adopt a team closer to home if I was ever going to get to a game. I already hated the Dolphins and Dan Marino, so I went with the Bucs. Loved watching James Wilder, Leeroy Selmon and Doug Williams back in the day.

Bethune Cookman - I grew up in Daytona. B-CC (now B-CU) was right there in town, had a great following and their head coach's son graduated with me (Alvin Wyatt Jr.). When I went to games, if you saw video of the stands, I was easy to find. I have on occasion used the B-CC Wildcat as my avatar on this board.

Central Florida - Almost went there out of high school, chose the Marines instead. This was back when they were Div1AA.

Ohio State - Been living in Columbus/Hilliard for 15 years now. Just completed my 14th season as an employee of the Athletic Department, controlling access to the RV parking lots on Game day. How do you live in Columbus, go to every home game for 14 years, and not be a Buckeye fan?

CBJ - Been with them since their inception, and stick with them forever. CARRY THE FLAG!

    And to take it further

Darrell Waltrip was my favorite driver growing up in the shadow of DIS. I used to be able to sit in class and time the cars as they entered turn 1. That's how close my high school is to the speedway. Even since the rebuild of "Vince Carter's Mainland High School", there are still places within the school that you can see the track.

Ohio State because I've lived in Columbus for 26 years and graduated from tOSU.

All my favorite pro teams are from out of state:

Washington Redskins - Art Monk and Darrell Green were my favorite players as a kid.

New York Yankees - The only baseball games I went to growing up were the Clippers, and that's when they were the Yankees farm team with all the greats playing here (Jeter, Posada, Rivera, etc.)

Los Angeles Lakers - NBA hardly counts for me, as I don't like it that much, but Kobe became my favorite player once Jordan retired and I've followed the Lakers more than any other team in the league.

    1. Ohio State

    2. Whoever's playing TSUN

    3. Whoever's playing Ntre Ame

    4. Whoever's playing the Yankees

    5. Whoever's playing the Cowboys

    6. Whoever's playing the Celtics

    7. Whoever's playing the Lakers

I've lived in Chicago for over 30 years, so I root for all for the Chicago pro teams now, but all of them combined don't matter as much as the Buckeyes.

Buckeyes - I must admit to dabbling in skunkbear fandom as a little tyke to upset my parents, but it was never genuine. By the time I was 7 I got over that phase. Quite frankly, I loved watching Jay Burson too much to root for anyone other than OSU and my dad took me to a lot of games at St. John's. I decided to go to college at Ohio State when my dad on a college visit took me up to the stacks of Thompson Library and had me look out over the Oval. It was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen.

Akron - I have a degree from there as well. When I attended the OSU-Akron soccer game earlier this year, I was a little torn and definately happy about the draw.

Browns - My first football memory was the Drive. I must have had a prediliction to pain even back then. My grandfather was a Bengals fan because he loved Paul Brown and hated the way Art Modell treated him. I didn't understand that back then until 1995, but by then, it was too late.

Cavs - Absolutely loved Mark Price growing up. I must have been the only kid in the neighborhood that practiced free throws so I could be like him. The only time I can ever recall being embarrassed about loving the Cavs were the last two years with Quitness. I hate the way the franchise sucked up to him and sold out for him only to be left waiting at the alter. Love em even more this year than last year.

Indians - Like NFBuck, I grew up with Joe Carter, Cory Snyder, Brook Jacoby, Mel Hall, Bud Black, Tom Candiotti. Loved those guys. I went to a game at Municipal for my 10th birthday and tried to get Joe Carter's autograph, but he just walked by all the kids after the game. Cory Snyder literally stayed and signed for every kid. I never looked up to JC again after that.

Blue Jackets - I admittedly grew up a fan of the St. Louis Blues. I have a lot of family out in St. Charles and my mom is from there so I just figured that would be a good team to support. It took about 4-5 years after the CBJ came to town to make the transition. But there's something about that hometown team. There's a connection that I couldn't ignore and now they have my full support.

Crew - Hometown team. Hardest working soccer team on the planet. Massive!

Aston Villa - I love European football, so I had to choose an EPL team and I didn't want to be a bandwagon jumper. I also didn't want to support a team that would be battling relegation every year. There was the Cleveland/American connection with Randy Lerner; and they have Lakewood, Ohio native Brad Friedel in goal, along with three other American players.

Basically, I chose my teams based on proximity and my love for the state of Ohio. I've lived all over this state and I'm proud to call it home. Why wouldn't I support its professional/college teams?

The Buckeyes. Because I'm smarter than fans of other teams. It's a gift and a curse.

Celtics. Dad was a Celtics fan because of Hondo.

Bengals. Because Mike Brown is the son of Paul Brown, and he has to be great, right?

Reds. 44 Magnum. Larkin. Sabo. Benzinger. Oliver. Nasty Boys.
