F Mickey Mitchell (transfer to Arizona State)

Mickey made his debut last night. Played maybe 8 minutes or so. He definitely is looking to find open teammates. He made a nice alley oop pass to giddens but he missed the dunk. Then a couple nice passes to Bell who wasn't ready to receive them. Hopefully with more minutes on the floor everyone can get in synch. He was hustling, battling for rebounds, and diving on the floor. Logged 3 rebounds and a steal.

A real high motor guy, student of the game, a real gym rat [/sarcasm]

Kid has the goods from what I can tell early on. He crashed the boards like a mad man and his passing is advanced to say the least. I want to see what he looks like trying to get his scoring as well. Hopefully more minutes to come!

Needs to get much stronger...had his hands on way too many balls (especially underneath) but didn't come up with them...

Mickey Mitchell is Finally Free

It was a rough start to the 2015-16 season for everyone on the Ohio State men’s basketball team, but no one had it worse than freshman Mickey Mitchell.

The four-start recruit out of Plano, Texas expected to come in and contribute on a young Buckeye team, but was ruled ineligible by the NCAA before the season began.

“Obviously no one wants to sit out, but to me I took it as a blessing,” Mitchell said. “It just gave me time to reevaluate, not just on the court stuff, my attitude off the court. How I talk to my teammates, how I talk to my coaches, and I think I’ve matured a lot just from the summer even to now. Just sitting out and just thinking about how can I mature. I’ve got this time off so I’m going to make the best of it.”

The 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward missed the first 11 games of the season before he got the call on Friday morning that he was allowed to play.

“Finally getting that call, it was great,” Mitchell said.

“I called my mom and she was crying. I let her cry a little bit, but then I FaceTimed all my family. We just talked about it and obviously I got in touch with my teammates and my coaches. They’ve been supporting me the whole time and there’s no way I could have gotten through all those months not being able to play without them being by my side.”

The last game played by Mitchell was back in March, his final game of his senior year of high school. Since then, he’s been at Ohio State, working hard in practice and trying to give his teammates a good idea of what their opponents would run.

“We’ve kind of used him primarily as a scout team type of guy,” Matta said. “He can run everybody’s offense and that sort of thing.”

Mitchell suited up for the first time for OSU’s upset over Kentucky on Saturday. He said that was when it first clicked that he was able to play college basketball.

“It took me until we were warming up against Kentucky to realize that I’m allowed to play,” he admitted. “I’m down here, I’m allowed to play. So it was crazy.”
