But St. John's 6-8 junior star Marc Loving, who led all scorers with 25 points, refused to let the Titans go quietly.
He nailed his third 3-pointer of the half with 39 seconds to play, and his fourth 3-pointer 15 seconds later to get St. John's within 58-54.
"Even though we had a seven or eight-point lead I was never comfortable knowing how good he is," Smith said of Loving. "We thought we were defending him pretty well, and he knocked down big shot after big shot."
"When you have a great shooter like Marc Loving, the game's never out of reach," Hayes said. "He proved that tonight. Luckily we hit some free throws down the stretch."
The Titans pushed the pace and made nearly every Fremont shot a contested one in the opening quarter. St. John's led 15-4 less than four minutes into the game on a 3-pointer from the wing by Tarvis Malone. By the end of the period St. John's lead had swelled to 24-6 as the pressure in the backcourt gobbled up the ball and had Ross reeling.
"Our pressure was effective early on, and we played pretty decent at a frenzied tempo for a while," St. John's coach Ed Heintschel said. "I thought we jumped out to that lead because we were shooting well and moving the ball around really well."
St. John's 6-foot-8 junior Marc Loving got involved on the offensive end in the second quarter, and the Titans pushed the lead to 31-8 when he scored off a lob on the fast break with nearly six minutes left in the first half. Two straight baskets on the break from Austin Gardner made it 35-8 just a minute later.
i highly doubt that sully and thomas will be back for the their senior seasons. i'll be surprised if sully is back next year.TooTallMenardo;2119754; said:Having a BIG forward like this will only take the heat off Sully or Thomas (if they both stick around). IMO, neither are ready for the NBA.

COLUMBUS -- St. John's Jesuit junior Marc Loving shared top honors with two other players Monday on the Associated Press Division I All-Ohio boys basketball team.
The 6-foot-8 Loving, who averaged 22.9 points and 9.0 rebounds, was named co-player of the year along with Jalen Robinson of Columbus Northland (19.1 points) and Justin Fritts of Mentor (28.1).
Loving committed to Ohio State shortly after his freshman season at St. John's.

Blade player of the year Marc Loving THE BLADE/LORI KING
A member of what is generally being considered one of the best classes of boys basketball talent this area has ever produced, St. John's Jesuit junior Marc Loving still managed to find a way to stand out among his talented peers from the Class of 2013.
The Titans' 6-foot-8 guard-forward has been piling up the postseason accolades -- Three Rivers Athletic Conference player of the year, Associated Press Division I district player of the year, and All-Ohio D-I co-player of the year.
Thus, it is no great surprise that Loving is the player of the year on the 2012 All-Blade boys team.
Already highly regarded on a state level coming out of DeVeaux Junior High because of his size and superb play in summer AAU basketball, Loving wasted no time when he hit the high school courts as a rare freshman starter at St. John's.
Following that first year under Titans coach Ed Heintschel, Loving received a scholarship offer from Ohio State, something Loving committed to shortly thereafter.
"Marc plays at an incredible level of basketball," Heintschel said. "He makes his teammates better. He'll give the ball up, which is unusual for a lot of kids with talent.
"He's played with a tremendous amount of pressure. He came in ballyhooed, and he committed early on to Ohio State. That puts a lot of pressure on a kid."
As a sophomore, Loving averaged 18.3 points and 7.4 rebounds, leading the Titans in both categories. This season, he bumped things up a notch for 15-7 St. John's, contributing 22.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per contest. He added 36 steals and 47 blocked shots, hit 52 percent (115-of-220) of 2-point shots, 34 percent (32-of-94) on 3-pointers, and 77 percent (169-of-219) at the free-throw line.
"It's difficult for a freshman coming in," Heintschel said, "and Marc did a great job. We got to the regional final that year and lost to the eventual state champion.
"Sophomore year he improved, but the improvement he made between his sophomore and junior year was pronounced. A lot of that had to do with strength and going to the basket."
