Marc Loving of St. John's Jesuit on Thursday became the first basketball recruit from the high school class of 2013 to verbally commit to a basketball scholarship offer from Ohio State University.

The 6-foot-7 Loving, who averaged 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds as a freshman starter on the Titans' varsity last season, was offered a scholarship by Buckeyes coach Thad Matta on Wednesday night.

"I always figured that's where Marc would go if he were offered," said veteran Titans coach Ed Heintschel, "so it didn't surprise me. He can certainly play at that level because he's such a highly skilled guy and he'll continue to work at his game.

"Marc should fit in well at Ohio State. They will utilize his multiple abilities well, like they did with Evan Turner. He has an extremely high basketball IQ. He knows the game, he understands the game and he knows how to blend his talents with his teammates to make them better. He's an unusually highly skilled kid for his age and his size."

Sophomore Loving commits to OSU

Toledo St. John's sophomore-to-be Marc Loving has become the first commitment for Ohio State's 2013 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-7 Loving averaged 13 points as a freshman for St. John's, which advanced to the Division I regional finals before losing to eventual state champion Massillon Jackson.

Loving said he was surprised when OSU coach Thad Matta offered him a scholarship on Tuesday. He decided to accept it today.

"Growing up, I always loved Ohio State and wanted to play basketball for them," Loving said. "They have a great tradition on and off the court. When they gave me a scholarship offer to go there, I accepted it proudly."

Loving's mother, Angela, said she encouraged him to take his time before committing. But Marc was sure Ohio State was where he wanted to go.

"We asked him, 'Are you sure?'" she said. "And he said, 'I?m 100 percent sure.' We support him 100 percent. This was his decision. Of course, we've always admired Ohio State, but you have to take the emotion out and make the right decision."

Loving shot the ball very well from the outside and was able to put the ball on the floor drawing several foul calls. His feet are huge and he still carries a baby face, which is definitely good. Loving will likely get to 6-foot-9 or 6-foot-10 before he is done growing. It's hard to believe a kid this young, this big, and this long is so skilled. Obviously, he has things he can improve on such as his overall foot speed, but he is still growing and getting use to his body so it's not much of a concern.

I will be posting how many points Marc puts up every game. These are his totals so far:

1) vs. Shaker Heights - 30 points
2) vs. Clay - 22 points
3) @ St. Edward's -18 points
4) vs. Woodward - 16 points
5) @ Detroit Jesuit - 24 points

That means he is averaging 22.0 points a game. Pretty impressive for a sophomore. :osu:

Thanks for doing that. It would be appreciated if you could tell us if he is getting most of his points around the bucket or if he is stepping outside and having some 15'. Also a little first-hand info on how his floor game is growing would be nice:)

The Titans just finished the Benedictine Capital City Classic in Richmond, VA. They went 2-1 with a tough loss to one of the best teams in Maryland. Loving's partial stats:

6) vs. Baltimore Mount St. Joesph's (MD) - 26 points
7) vs. Roman Catholic (PA) - 18 points
8) vs. Richmond Varina (VA) - 14 points

He was picked for the all-tournament team. He is now averaging 21.0 ppg. Overall, I can say that he has put on some more weight and will continue to work on his big man skills. He is currently around 6'8", can shoot from the outside, and handle the ball very adequately. If he works on his post game, he might be the best basketball player from Toledo since Jim Jackson (and yes I am aware of William Buford). Jack Mewhort was the first St. John's Jesuit student to graduate early and I am sure that Loving will also be academically ready to do so if he chooses.

9) @ Toledo Start - 22 points

Here's an article in The Toledo Blade about the game. It was the first game that I have been able to make this year. Loving makes it look so effortless that it's not even funny. He was handling the ball up and down the court, slashing, and shooting from the outside. I was with a friend who goes to UNC, but doesn't know too much basketball and she said that he is Harrison Barnes type of good out of school. His only weakness is that his post moves are still very underdeveloped. Also, heard a rumor that he might be transferring to a basketball prep school in the off-season. You'll hear it here first if it happens.

St. John's go-to guy is 6-foot-8 sophomore guard-forward Marc Loving, who committed to a scholarship offer from Ohio State not long after his freshman season ended.

?During the summer, I really worked on my game and my teammates really look for me a lot now,? said Loving, who is averaging 20.9 points and 6.8 rebounds. ?We really want to win and I want to win. I just want to do what I can do to help my team win.

?I definitely play harder now than I did last season at both ends of the court. I don't think it's a lot of pressure [being the go-to guy] because it's what I want to do. I don't see it as that difficult of a task.?

?Marc has had so much experience playing AAU basketball, and is well prepared physically,? Heintschel said. ?He was a little bit of a reluctant scorer last year. But, for us to be really good, he needs to feel confident taking his shot, even when they aren't dropping.?
