OHIO STATE LB CALLS ESPN.COM HEADLINE “TRASH” FOR QUESTIONABLE NARRATIVE
Posted by Matt Yoder on Nov 17, 2014 09:45

Even now that we’re in the age of the committee, narratives still matter in college football. That’s why what took place on ESPN.com over the course of Saturday was enough to raise a few eyebrows. It shows that all it takes is a couple of words and subtle implications to get the juices flowing.

#8 Ohio State went on the road and defeated #25 Minnesota 31-24. The Buckeyes never trailed and led by 17 in the 4th quarter before stumbling slightly down the stretch. ESPN.com’s initial headline from the game? “Ohio State escapes Minnesota.”

#4 TCU went on the road and defeated 3-6 Kansas 34-30. The Frogs actually trailed the Jayhawks midway through the 3rd quarter before rallying late in a game that could have been one of the upsets of the season. ESPN.com’s initial headline from that game? “TCU passes test in Lawrence.”

On the surface, those headlines seem to be head-scratchers. Ohio State was up 3 scores in the 4th quarter and never seriously faced the threat of defeat in the second half till icing the game with a recovered onside kick. TCU was down 10 on the road at a team who’s still trying to get rid of the Charlie Weis stench and managed a come-from-behind victory. Furthermore, Minnesota was the Top 25 team here. Kansas is a test in basketball, not football.

The pair of headlines got the attention of Buckeye LB Darron Lee. He called the curious discrepancy “trash.”

Cont'd ...

ESPN continues it's Jekyll and Hyde presentation of Ohio State:

View attachment 9851

I was very surprised that David Pollack, of all the talking heads ESPN parades through their various panels, took up the defense of OSU during the selection show last night and essentially justified the VT loss with not only the post-Navy hangover defense, and the new-QB/OL trying to solve a Bud Foster defense defense, but he even added a new one I hadn't heard before ... that VT may actually be a decent team given four of their five losses have been by a TD or less, plus factoring personnel losses due to injury. Basically he made the case that the VT squad that played Ohio St is an 8-2 team, but that team isn't on the field anymore. For whatever reason, they're not getting the bounces. (I chalk it up to karma coming to collect after all the bounces they caught Sep 6).

Pollack consistently rates the B1G teams higher than his counterparts.

Strange, his own poll vote doesn't seem to think much of Ohio State...

Another pro-OSU article on E$ecP!N...

Ohio State deserves to be in top four

[...]
If the goal is to put the best teams into the playoff, Ohio State’s case is sound. In fact, there may not be a team in the country playing better football right now than the Buckeyes. Barrett has gone from a deer in headlights to a Heisman candidate. The offensive line has allowed just 10 sacks in the last eight games. The defense is light-years ahead of Oregon by virtually every metric.

To the Pollack posts: If that poll image is the most current one, and not last week's, that would seem to solidify the idea of forced talking points. If the image is the previous week's poll, then maybe Pollack has come around?

As to the recent string of pro-OSU articles, I think it all comes down to who generates the most $$$ in all areas of ESPN's interests. They want four traditional powers in the Playoffs, and they want to avoid the ratings disaster of another SEC rematch in their valuable new advertising machine that is the CFP.

That is indeed his ESPN Power thingy poll from this week -- which I assume they do on Sunday.

Sidenote: I haven't followed ESPN's poll, I just took a shot in the dark that Pollack would be Pollack and have Ohio State low.
Apparently overall ESPN has Ohio State ranked #5 ... Pollack is actually an outlier.
The overwhelming majority of their pundits have OSU ranked 4-6, with Colin Cowherd alone at 3, and Desmond/Pollack/Schlabach at 8 (nobody ranked at 7)

I'm just shocked he ranked us above Georgia.

Exactly this. ESecPN has a yooge investment in these college football playoffs. The big picture $$$ people are smart enough to know they want big name/traditional power schools to drive those ratings. Ohio State is on the bubble and so they happen to be the ones being pimped right now. Same would apply for a Tejas, USC, Oklahoma etc., were they in the same position.
