Duke Blue Devils (that rat faced scumbag)

I love how the announcers went along with the acting of Paulus.

well you have Jay Bilas, a Duke grad, and Mike Patrick who has a bigger man crush on Duke than Dikie V did on JJ! That is why duke is on every damn night they play, even when it's against Coppin State.

Classic Duke myth! Do you follow their recruiting rankings. Do you know how many McDonald's All-Americans line their bench year after year after year.

Duke has as much, if not more, talent than any program in the nation. Just because a disproportionate number of them are whiny, soccer-flopping white boys don't buy into this myth that they're not highly sought after, highly talented 5* recruits.

compared to other ACC teams...completely out-athleted....last night completely out-athleted

Greg Paulas, Kyle Singler, Jon Scheyer, Taylor King, David McClure

Very unathletic bunch that gets major minutes for the Blue Devils.

They out-effort opponents and rely heavily on Gerald Henderson and JaMarcus Nelson this year. Both of those guys penetrate and draw defenses so Scheyer, King, Paulas, and Singler can shoot.

Don't say they're as athletic as most teams they play, because it is simply untrue. Great coaching, balls-to-the-wall defense, and great offesnive sets, that spread the court perferctly for their playmakers to make plays.

You can be unathletic as a great basketball player. I don't think anyone would argue who the best athletes were in a line-up of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird.

Doesn't mean Larry couldn't play a mean basketball. He's one of the all-time greats.

It amazes me how much pressure they are able to put on the ball with a lineup of Paulas, Scheyer, Singler, Henderson, and King. Thats what they ran with almost all night last night, and they were completely out-athleted at almost every position with exception to Henderson.

That is just up front. Most years they have had an athletic big man and they always dominate. But this year, Zoubek is their only real big man and he is hurt. So, it looks like they get outclassed, but that is just because they cant matchup inside this year.

Every other position they are stacked at

Jay Bilas was appalled at the officiating throughout most of the game and was disappointed the officlas forced FSU to change their game b/c they were afraid to leave their feet.

I'd love for someone to find the clip of the FSU basketball player who pulled up for a 15 foot jump-shot and got called for a charge. When's the last time you saw a guy pick up a charge on a jump shot. Straight up, straight down. Charge.

I'm not going to give an inch of ground to this well maintained Duke myth of a bunch of untalented, scrappy white boys (aided by the occasional well-spoken "Negro" from a prep school) winning on heart, hard work and intelligence.

The whole things just reeks of racism. God I fucking hate Duke. The domers are downright sympathetic compared to that crowd in Durham. I can't wait until Carolina dismantles their overrated asses.

Again, don't take the out-athleted out of context. Just because they aren't as athletic as their opponents on most nights, doesn't mean they aren't stacked.

Is Sheyer a better basketball player than the guy he was guarding last night (Ralph Mims)? I would absolutely say Scheyer is a better basketball player. is he a better athlete? Absolutely not. Is Greg Paulas a better athlete than Isiah Swann? Paulas played a good QB in high school, but I'm not buying he's a better athlete. Check Isiah Swann out on youtube. Kyle Singler. Another great recruit, McDonalds All-American, great system player for Duke. Super athletic though? Nope.

Again, Dukes athletes this year are JaMarcus Nelson and Gerald Henderson and they depend on those guys to ge ttheir offense going.

With or without athletes they play the meanest man-to-man defense and its a direct reflection of Coach K.

Dude, Duke of the last 5 years isn't Duke of 1992 or 2001.

When they ran Jason Williams, Corey Maggette, Carlos Boozer, Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Mike Dunleavy, Dahntay Jones, Chris Duhon, and Daniel Ewing at you.

That is an athletic lineup.

The last 4 years they've been getting it done with less athleticism and more team play. They space the floor, create open shots, and play aggressive man-to-man defense.

I don't think anyone is confusing JJ Reddick with Corey Maggette. I don't think anyone is confusing Greg Paulas with Jason Williams. Taylor King certainly isn't Elton Brand or Sheldon Williams.

Lee Melchioni brought some energy, but is far from Shane Battier. Shavlik Randolph had nice game, probably moreso than Dahntay Jones, but wasn't nearly the athlete.

Duke is getting it done with the most aggressive defense they've ever played, and with less athletically inclined players. I'm sticking to it.

I'm trying really hard to not say this, but it appears in your posts that athletic = black.

Not really. Josh McRoberts was very athletic. Would you say JJ Reddick was a great athlete? Or Jon Scheyer, or Greg Paulus?

Compare Paulus to Jason Williams. Before J Wills car accident, he was the fastest PG I ever saw end to end in my life. I swear he'd get an outlet pass at one one elbow, and have raced by every defender before they even turned around. That's not Paulus's game, and it never will be. It is what it is.

Are Paulus and Scheyer a good backcourt? Yes, but their games are completely different than when Jason Williams and Chris Duhon were there.

Make of it what you will.

Yes. Look at the quickness and precision displayed here and tell me otherwise:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBpFe483y0M&feature=related"]YouTube - JJ picks his nose[/ame]

Besides, it isn't fair to compare Redick with Maggette, as you did above. It would be fair to compare Redick with Trajan Langdon, since they played exactly the same role, only Redick had a better all-around game.

If you want to compare Maggette, who is an elite athlete as compared to even the average NBA player, do it with Gerald Henderson, Jr. Henderson isn't as muscular as Maggette, but I bet he'd beat him in the high jump and in a sprint.

Fair points. Although I am arguing the entire team. I have pulled the top 7 players in minutes from 07-08, 06-07, 05-06, 04-05 compared to 98-99, 99-00, 00-01, 01-02.

I don't think it's even close in athletic ability. Draw your own conclusions I suppose.

04-05
JJ Redick 37.3 mpg
Daniel Ewing 34.5 mpg
Shelden Williams 33.6 mpg
Sean Dockery 26.7 mpg
Lee Melchinni 21.7 mpg
DeMarcus Nelson 19.2 mpg
Shavlik Randolph 18.9 mpg

05-06
JJ Redick 37.1 mpg
Sheldon Williams 33.3 mpg
Greg Paulus 32.3 mpg
Sean Dockery 29.6 mpg
Josh McRoberts 24.5 mpg
DeMarcus Nelson 21.4mpg
Lee Melchionni 19.8 mpg

06-07
Josh McRoberts 35.2 mpg
Jon Scheyer 33.2 mpg
Greg Paulus 32.4 mpg
DeMarcus Nelson 31.8 mpg
David Mcclure 21.7 mpg
Gerald Henderson 19.3 mpg
Lance Thomas 14.9 mpg

07-08
Demarcus Nelson 30.7 mpg
Jon Scheyer 28.1 mpg
Kyle Singler 26.4 mpg
Greg Paulus 26.2 mpg
Gerald Henderson 24.6 mpg
Lance Thomas 17.7 mpg
Nolan Smith 16.3 mpg
*Of note, Taylor king has averaged close to 20 mpg over their last 5 games but is only averaging 13 mpg on the season. He will continue to see more minutes, as he absolutely can shoot the hell out of the ball.

98-99
Trajan Langdon 31.1 mpg
William Avery 31.0 mpg
Elton Brand 29.3 mpg
Chris Carrawell 28.8 mpg
Shane Battier 24.0 mpg
Corey Maggette 17.7 mpg
Nate James 14.6 mpg

99-00
Chris Carrawell 35.6 mpg
Shane Battier 35.5 mpg
Jason Williams 34.0 mpg
Nate James 28.5 mpg
Mike Dunleavy 24.1 mpg
Carlos Boozer 23.7 mpg
Matt Christensen 9.5 mpg

00-01
Shane Battier 34.9 mpg
Jason Williams 31.8 mpg
Mike Dunleavy 29.2 mpg
Nate James 27.8 mpg
Chris Duhon 27.8 mpg
Carlos Boozer 25.6 mpg
Andrew Sweet 11.3 mpg

01-02
Chris Duhon 35.1 mpg
Jason Williams 33.6 mpg
Mike Dunleavy 32.4 mpg
Dahntay Jones 28.9 mpg
Carlos Boozer 28.4 mpg
Daniel Ewing 18.2 mpg
Nick Horvath 8.0 mpg

Draw your own conclusions, but I think it's readily apparent that Duke has not been nearly athletic as they once were. Instead they are much more intense on defense and a lot scrappier. And I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM.

All I'll say about Paulus is watch the ESPN interview with him after the game... He has a visible welt under his right eye, which is the one that he grabbed after that scrum on the floor...

And BTW... The fouls last night were Duke-19, FSU-22... So that discrepancy argument is flawed... And yes, I watched the game...

what'd you think of the charging fouls they called?

I also saw the welt under his eye.....and I saw it in the first half as well. It was there before the scrum even began.
