Maybe Urban wasn't ready to promote him yet. Coombs isn't getting any younger, and I'm sure saw UC as an opportunity to go back home, move up the ranks faster, build a defense his way, and do it without the immense spotlight and pressure that tOSU brings. I doubt that Coombs would be the DC in the next 2yrs at tOSU(Schiano probably next year and then another hire). At UC, Coombs can start fresh and possibly work his way to a HC gig when Fickell leaves or even make his mark on a MAC school in a few yearsI may be biased but why leave OSU for UC and NOT be head coach? Move up the ranks at OSU and then leave for a head coaching gig. He'd be much more attractive coming from a successful program than getting looks as an associate head coach at what could be a less (maybe much less) successful UC program.
Don't get me wrong, I am definitely happy for Coombs and grateful fot everything he has done.
