DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

Luke is a very good recruiter. He has an impressive resume in that department. He has done a good/very good job in the past developing LB talent.

I agree that Luke can coach up linebackers. Just look at the job he did with Laurinitas and others from that and earlier periods. If he can just concentrate on position development, I think Luke is a very solid coach, but I don't think he has handled the additional responsibilities very well. Maybe Withers had a big impact on that, I'm not sure. I also believe he is a solid recruiter.

The "disaster" was totally expected and typical over a coaching changeover. Fickell had his hands tied. Throw that season out. Now, after 2 seasons we have to look at everything that has gone right and wrong. I have no doubts Urban will figure it out. That's the "bottom line".
Don't forget the number of players who were suspended for part or all of that season, Pryor, Herron, Posey, Adams......

Luke Fickell grasped a poisoned chalice in the Tressel aftermath and played his hand just about as well as anyone could have expected. Lots of problems on this year's D, and many derive from coaching, but goodness, he should never be questioned for the graceful and professional way he handled that mess.

I'm not referring to previous posters but to some of what I have heard from friends back home. 24-1? I'll take that again and again.

On a side note, some lady just walked into a South African gym wearing a TSUN tee-shirt, to be greeted with a GO BUCKEYES. She muttered, "I have to fly 10,000 miles for that?" Yes, because of guys like Luke Fickell, who grew up in Northland area never wanting to be anything but a Buckeye.

I do not think anyone would question how he handled the Tressel aftermath but I certainly would question his ability to call defenses and I would not give him all of the credit for 24-1.

One of the things that really confuses me about Luke is that if people think so highly of him why has not he ever been interviewed for a HC position and if he has I would like to know which ones. I do not know maybe people do think highly of him but he just wants to stay in Columbus. It will be interesting to see if he will still be the DC after Withers replacement is hired.

Well, off the top of my head, Pitt.

The Ohio State University relies heavily on a family felt atmosphere in all things. Its one thing that make this huge university so special. I work in a relatively long standing family (small) business in columbus. THe fickell story has lots of similarities to a family business system. He came in and did some tremendous jobs at the LB skill position. He was loyal extremely loyal and was the corner stone of the program during the tat gate aftermath. Now these are my Opinions; but Fickell probably feels either vindicated or entitled for what he endured and his hard work he put into the program. Weather or not you feel FIck has done a poor job or not. It will be difficult for this staff to get rid of him imo unless there is just over whelming proof of his poor workmanship. You will always have this dilemma in this kind of system, coaches like Fick will almost always get a 2nd chance but if the status quo continues, how much longer can it continue? Next year will tell a lot. But i thought that's what we said last year?

Rid of, and demoted to position coach are two different things.

I probably should have said if he has interviewed for other jobs maybe other people do not think that highly of him as many of the other people in this thread do. I will be interested to see what happens when the new hire comes on board. That will say volumes.

I would say, volumetrically, at this particular moment, Mr. Fickell remains with us and Mr. Withers does not. I'm not real sure how much volume you want. Keep in mind also, that the one that's not, was Meyer's guy, and the one that's still with us is a 'holdover' from 'the previous regime' - so, who would it be easier to nudge out the door?

Fick keeps bringing in some excellent talent with his recruiting. Let's see if he can coach a couple of these kids up this offseason and start to reap the rewards. If the defense doesnt improve in the LB area this year, then maybe he just can't get it done. There's a lot of talent coming in and youth on the roster already. I'm for giving him a chance to turn them into stars on this defense at least one more season.

I saw Luke make some progress this year with Josh Perry. Toward the end of the year, Perry's run support became rock solid, this offseason he really needs to focus on pass defense. Perry is not a weak talent, he is developing into a decent player and could become a solid spoke in the LB wheel. You can see Luke is making progress there. Lets see if he can make progress with the later classes. Luke can coach up players, i'm just not sure how well he can handle positional duties and the coordinator roles.
