DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

Fick keeps bringing in some excellent talent with his recruiting. Let's see if he can coach a couple of these kids up this offseason and start to reap the rewards. If the defense doesnt improve in the LB area this year, then maybe he just can't get it done. There's a lot of talent coming in and youth on the roster already. I'm for giving him a chance to turn them into stars on this defense at least one more season.
I can't see how anyone could possibly question his ability to coach up the talent at LB. I think the LBs showed improvement, and overall, I think that despite depth issues, they played at a passable level.

Buckeyes' linebackers did not, IMO, play at a passable level this season -- not for a Buckeye team.

There are really 2 options. Bring in a talented DB coach from a big school or a successful DC from a middling school and give them the reins. Luke is CoDC in title more than anything else.
Or give Luke full reins and bring in a successful DB coach from a middling program to coach the secondary.

The first option gets you a 'better' coach, but may result in Fickel leaving sooner than later.

This.
The LB's everyone is comparing this year's to were coached by Luke. I know Boren played LB in HS, but I'd imagine Fick had a large hand in turning him into a solid LB in half a year. The best mechanic in the world can't turn a Ford Festiva into a Lambo.

I admit to being in the reactionary crowd calling for Fickell's job at first but in hindsight, the talent just isn't there/isn't developed yet. I think Perry will develop into a good player and I definitely think that Trey and Mitchell have the talent to be phenomenal players for us. I will say that there better be marked improvement at the position with Grant, Perry, Mitchell, Johnson, Camren Williams, and maybe Shazier returning, in addition to adding McMillan, Hubbard, Berger, and Booker. There has to be at least 2-3 really good LBs in that group to be developed sooner rather than later.

On the other hand (and I'm not saying LF is one) a bad mechanic can most definitely turn a Lambo into a Festiva.
You could remove the engine and wheels from a Lamborghini and hitch it to a pack of feral lolcats and it would still be better than a Festiva.
We were calling ourselves LB U for the better part of a decade and the biggest reason for that was Luke Fickell's evaluation, recruiting and coaching of "three star" talent.

Two of the guys you mentioned shouldn't be used in the same paragraph as potential "really good LBs." From what I have seen of them I think serviceable back up is all you can hope for.

the games in which we struggled the most were games where Curtis Grant was out or limited. (Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State). Grant may not be a star but he is vital to this defense.
We struggled when he was missing and the opponent had a running game...
In this game, it could work slightly to our advantage IF we go to the dime

I just think our scheme sucks as does our blitz packages. Any third grader can watch the game, see how we line up on defense, and say "ok just stand up and throw it to the guy over there that is all by himself.". C'mon. Really? We are that scared to get burnt deep once or twice that we have to play off every split end 7 yards or more? Seriously? Our DBs are that slow and inept at covering a receiver that we have to give every receiver in the country 7 yards of cushion? Not to mention we never make any adjustments. We are completely reactionary on defense. We do not dictate anything. We do not take anything away with the exception of the deep ball, which we still managed to give up quite a few times this year. We make every QB we face look like an All American and they throw for 300+ with 75% completions. I am tired of watching DB's not turn to find the ball, they play the man not the ball which goes against everything I have ever been taught and is completely ignorant to me. How do you defend when you have no idea where the ball is? It is obviously being taught that way in practice because I have seen all of the DBs do it at some point during the year, and it is consistently displayed by our DBs. They look like the have no clue how to cover a man. All because that is how it is being taught and practiced. That is not how the NFL DBs cover a receiver for a reason.
