DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

However, it's very obvious that the system is not working for some reason and that's the point of the discussion, is it the players not being right for the system or is it the system isn't putting the players in the position to succeed?

I'm more trying to figure out *which* coach at this point.
There are certainly issues with depth and talent; but there's also a number of issues which appear to be systemic at this point.
Maybe other people understand their actual responsibilities better. But it doesn't seem like there are clear responsibilities when it comes to the Defense as a Whole Unit. We know whose got what positions... but, whose responsible for the gameplan? playcall? overall scheme and theory?

I personally think it is the later, but also I was talking to a buddy here in MI and he reminded me of how much he liked Dorian Bell. I believe the attrition has hurt tOSU a lot through the years. There are a lot of 5*/4* players who have left the team who would have been significant contributors

Dorian Bell
Jamel Turner
Melvin Fellows
Johnathan Newsome
David Durham
Dominic Clarke
Adam Belamy
Chad Hagan
Scott McVey
Se'Von Pittman

Scott McVey and Melvin Fellows took medical hardships due to career-ending injuries. McVey was a three star recruit and Fellows was considered 3 star by some databases.

David Durham was a three star recruit. (shouldn't be on a list talking about 5/4 star recruits)

Dominic Clarke had two run ins with the law and was kicked off the team. (disorderly conduct and DUI)

Pittman was a late recruit that Meyer flipped, the kid had a year-ending injury, and then decided to quietly transfer.

Dorian Bell was a part of the tattoo scandal, so its not a surprise he transferred.

Assuming Luke gets the DC position all to himself with Withers moving on, it's now time to sink or swim.

I know many people regard the co-coordinator setup as a failure, but Coach Meyer set it up that way intentionally and I think that it's impossible for it to succeed. I wouldn't be surprised to the co-coordinator setup continue even after Withers is gone. An elevated title like that could be part of the package that entices the right replacement to come aboard. It could also be a deserved promotion for a guy like Mike Vrabel. I could see it going in any direction - it will be interesting to see what happens.

I could see maybe where vrabel gets the co-coordinator title, but having fickell being the gameday play caller. Without being behind the scenes nobody can do anything but guess what may have been the main contributor to our defensive woes, but there's a good chance that it's because they had 2 EXPERIENCED co-coordinators. Don't forget that fickell was co-coordinator with heacock for several years. We could have the exact same situation: experienced main co-coordinator in fickell with inexperienced (in coaching years) co-coordinator in vrabel.

It's a lot easier to have co-coordinators when the philosophy is shared. Heacock and Fickell were more or less on the same page and Fickell and Vrabel would be, too. I give Fickell lots of credit, both in recruiting and his eye for coaching talent. He did hire Vrabel after all...And Stan Drayton has proven to be a heck of a RB coach though I think he came in right before Tressel was fired.

I was wondering if anybody knew if Luke interviewed for the job at BG. I know that being an Ohio State assistant coach is a very nice well-paid job but it is the aspiration of any football coach to be an HC at a "BCS" school.I do not know maybe does not want to leave Columbus and is just satisfied with being a DC.

I haven't read or heard that he has officially. FWIW, that's most likely DJ Durkin's job if he wants it anyways.
