DT Doug Worthington (Official Thread)

It may be undecided where DW ends up. From JT's press conference today:

official.site/101006

REPORTER: Who moves in with David Patterson out?

COACH TRESSEL: Joel, Todd Denlinger, and Doug Worthington has been working inside and played inside this past weekend and Doug will join that group.

REPORTER: Is Worthington, do you see him there down the road, too, in that area?

COACH TRESSEL: He's gotten so big and we're looking for places to try to give him an opportunity, and he's really done a nice job in there. You don't know what he's going to grow into. Sometimes, though, I like a big guy on the edge to -- I don't want those tackles to get used to nothing but speed rushes, I like them to get bowled over occasionally too. So I think Doug's the kind of guy that's going to be able to do both.

I was told by someone close to the team that this was tried once already this year a few months back. He was moved back out because it did not work.

Is this a case of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole?

Or is this a case of something that didn't work against OSU's O-Line in practice... worked out just fine against BG in real game action?

Sounds familiar...I wonder if it's a matter of depth... we are stacked at DE, but need able bodies at DT for depth (in case something happened to Quinn, Joel or Todd).

Perhaps it's like the OLine... try to get the best 4 guys on the field. Doug's got a ton of talent (#4 DE in HS?), so maybe they're just trying to get him on the field wherever.

Tresselbeliever;630242; said:
Worthington's films in high school were certainly excellent. However, some of the other DEs that we currently have on the team showed more explosiveness coming off the edge than he did. And with him getting bigger and stronger, maybe this is a case of a dominant DE on the high school level finding a more suitable position in college. If he can beef up to around 300 with that 6-7 frame, I'm sure we'll get him on the field somewhere.

...Lots of speculation on our part about why the move to the inside is being tried again after not working out earlier.

This recent quote from Quinn Pitcock might explain it best:

Captain Quinn Pitcock said:
He's probably the guy since the season started, he's been the most improved. He wants to play, and he could be a factor.

Really? I'm sure you can dig up that post in this thread for us...

It's off topic but some time when your bored, check out my first posts on Rose. My first impressions came at the Glenville/Canton McKinley game when Rose was an unknown to the rateing services junior. For once I got one right.

In the beacon journal today, Pitcock said, he definitely has the tools .Worthington could be like PSU Jimmy Kennedy from a few years ago who dominates inside.

That is one heck of a way talking another player up of what he could become.

Tressel loves tall players on the edge at DE but, the bucks are so loaded at DE.

The Jaguars are killing people right now with two giant defensive tackles. Worthington has the frame and athletic ability to be another John Henderson which translates to big money in the NFL. He just needs the time in game to get his niche carved out. I think he's going to be a good one wherever he ends up on the line. If he ends up at D tackle next to Gholston, there are definitely going to be some nightmares in the very near future for opposing linemen!

Just how big is Worthington now? Anyone got an idea? Heighthwise he's around 6'8" isn't he? I wonder what his weight is.
