DT Cameron Heyward (6x Pro Bowl, 3x All Pro, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Heyward is more than just a fill-in

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State foes try to avoid All-Big Ten defensive end Vernon Gholston, but they're not finding much relief by going the other direction.

Freshman Cameron Heyward has replaced junior Lawrence Wilson, who suffered a broken leg in the opener, and the Georgia native has been thriving. He's tied for third on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss, and one of his crushing blows against Penn State was named the Jack Tatum hit of the week.

"Cameron's done an excellent job in holding up his end of the bargain, and there will be a day when they're not running toward (him)," OSU coach Jim Tressel said. "He's going to be a darn good football player."

Cam needs to step up this week. Rob Rose is banged up...

I wouldn't worry about that, as he's probably the most technically sound D-lineman on tOSU front and has the motor and athletic ability to be an All-American. I worry when Heyward has to get off the field replaced by Alex Barrow, but not Heyward. Heyward has been starting over Rose anyway.

I actually think Heyward wasn't getting at it yesterday like he normally does. I was a bit disappointed. However, after Beanie's run when he celebrated by running the whole way to the bench, the whole defense stepped up and got things going.

That's interesting because (without seeing the stats yet) I thought he did well yesterday. I thought he was putting a lot of pressure on the QB yesterday.

Okay, you're right. I'm wrong. I'm not going to turn this into another Malcolm Jenkins discussion. Just go watch the first couple of quarters.

I think you misread my tone--there was no animosity. I just thought it was interesting because I remember thinking he was putting a lot of pressure on the QB yesterday (and you very may well be right, it just wasn't what I had noticed).

Apologies, your perception is certainly your right. I guess I get on the defensive because every time anyone may point out a rough day or imperfection with a Buckeye, the reception is far less than positive. To be honest, I don't even know why I continue to post. The Jenkins thread (retitled "How to evaluate a cornerback") became a personal attack instead of a discussion. The scars are deep. :) My bad.

You have an opinion. People disagreed with it. You disagreed with them disagreeing with it. Now get over it. People thought Malcolm was playing lights out, you didn't. Guess what? No one cares, as long as we keep improving and, more importantly, winning. Whining about people disagreeing with your somewhat brash (maybe not incorrect, but certainly brash) opinion isn't winning you any points.

On an infinitely more important note, isn't it about time to change the thread title to DE Cameron Heyward?

Having seen Heyward, for the first time in person, I was very impressed.. he's quicker than I thought he was... and I actually thought he played a great game yesterday.. his best to date..

Maybe it didnt translate to TV, and ill have to watch the tape again, but in person, I thought he played his best game yet..
