HEYWARD GOES TO OSU TO ESCAPE FATHER'S SHADOW

OHIO STATE'S HEYWARD COMING INTO HIS OWN

Thursday, September 13, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Cameron Heyward went to junior high and high school in Georgia, but he knew playing football in the South wasn't for him.
"Even though we live in the SEC, he's not an SEC kid," said his mother, Charlotte Heyward-Blackwell. "He's gritty."
And though he was the son of former Pitt and NFL running back Craig Heyward, he wasn't looking to follow his late father, which is why he turned down Panthers' boss Dave Wannstedt, a family friend and the first coach to offer him a scholarship.

Heyward off to fast start for Ohio St.
Thursday, September 13, 2007

HERALD NEWS

It took ex-Eastside High School defensive lineman David Thompson and former Paterson Catholic quarterback Stanley Jackson until their senior seasons to make impacts on the field for Ohio State.
Their prolonged progress is more indicative of how difficult it is to contribute consistently for one of the country's premier programs, but Cameron Heyward has at least slightly adjusted the curve. The second eldest of four sons fathered by late Passaic legend Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, the 6-foot-6, 282-pound defensive tackle is already part of the 10th-ranked Buckeyes' defensive line rotation. The true freshman, a reserve defensive tackle, recorded three tackles, one for a loss, and a sack during Ohio State's 20-2 home victory over Akron on Saturday.

It will be interesting to track his playing time throughout the year.

Robert Rose was listed as the starter in the game data. He was also credited with one assist, whereas Cameron is not listed in the Tackles table.

But I noticed Cameron a lot more than I noticed Robert. I don't know if it means anything, but it makes me think.

Rose is a very powerful player at DE, but Heyward has the great first step that makes for a an NFL like pass rusher. Both these guys will keep growing into the position. They are just different types of DEs.

I lost my head for a second during the UW game. Number 97 almost took Locker's head off and I said to myself "Who the hell is #97???" It took me a few seconds until I realized it was Heyward. I missed the first two games because of the BTN debacle so this was my first time seeing Cameron and I was VERY impressed. He's a beast and he's only gonna get better.

The big question is going to be next year. Our DL could be pretty spectacular, even if Gholston goes pro. Does Heyward or Rose step into his spot? Does Wilson regain his starting position if he comes back at full strength, or does Cam's progression this year overtake him? Either way, we are going to have AT LEAST 3 studly DEs and a few guys at DT who are improving, plus the addition of Goebel who could probably gain some PT as a True FR depending on how good the top 4 right now get by year's end. I am so pumped to see how this year ends up, but probably even moreso to see next years' squad... especially the SC game!!
